How to Start the High Stakes Treasure Hunt in RDR2
You start this hunt through a random encounter. An old treasure hunter who is usually found muttering to himself near cliff edges northeast of Riggs Station, but he can also appear near Valentine or Cumberland.

Don’t worry if you miss him, he will respawn in the different areas mentioned later. In my experience, it will take 3 to 4 in-game days for him to respawn again if you do miss him.
When you finally find and get this fella, he won’t give up the map willingly. You will need to rob or kill this old treasure hunter to loot the map and get things started.
The High Stakes Treasure Map 1 Location
Now that you have the elusive High Stakes Treasure Map 1, saddle up and head west of Valentine to Cumberland Falls.

Go to the eastern side of the falls and look for a small fallen log. Use it to cross to the ledge behind the waterfall. From there, climb up the path into the little cave behind the water to find the treasure and the second High Stakes map.
The High Stakes Treasure Map 2 Location
Wear your cold weather outfit because the High Stakes treasure map 2 takes you far north to Barrow Lagoon, located in the Western Grizzlies, northwest of Valentine.

The treasure is located above the frozen water of the lagoon, between Lake Isabelle and Widow Rock.
Look for a natural log bridge connecting two rock formations. Walk to the middle of the log. In a small hole, you will find the treasure and the third and final map.
The High Stakes Treasure Map 3 Location
For the High Stakes Treasure Map 3 location which is the final leg of the journey, travel to Bacchus Station, just north of Fort Wallace.

WARNING: You absolutely have to save your game manually before going for the gold bars here. The path is dangerous and you can fall and die easily.
Head up the trail northeast of the station. Ride along the cliff edge until you see a path leading down between two large rocks. Dismount and carefully head down the slope, then turn left. Follow the narrow ledge.
- Jump down to the platform below.
- Turn around and jump down again.
- Turn around a third time, hidden in a crevice in the rock wall, you will find three gold bars.
In my opinion, the High Stakes treasure hunt is just as easy as the Jack Hall Gang hunt. It took me about 20 minutes to complete.
