The Sinking City 2 Ending Explained: What Happens to Faye and Calvin?

The ending of The Sinking City 2 reveals that Faye and Calvin have been manipulated by Yog-Sothoth throughout the story. At first, it seems like Calvin, the protagonist, is hell-bent on saving Faye. But as the truth comes out, his love for her is what Yog-Sothoth uses to carry out its plan and enter their world.

By the end, Faye lives to see another day, but both of them become the slaves to Yog-Sothoth. They realize they have helped unleash something far worse as Arkham is destroyed around them and they share a kiss. Let’s take a deeper look at The Sinking City 2’s ending.

Spoiler warning: This article, unsurprisingly, contains massive endgame spoilers for The Sinking City 2. Feel free to come back after beating the game if you don’t want the ending spoiled for you. If not, let’s see what really happens in the end.

What Happens at the End of The Sinking City 2?

Calvin eventually reaches the Elder Things’ ruins beneath Arkham and opens the portal once again. He confronts and defeats Slither Prime that comes through the portal there.

Calvin then finds Faye’s soul and enters the dream world with her. There, he finally learns the truth about what happened earlier: Calvin was the one who originally died. When Yog-Sothoth seemingly attacked Faye, Calvin stepped in front of the attack and got killed.

Why seemingly? Because I believe Calvin was the real target all along and Yog-Sothoth knew Faye would sacrifice herself for him, kick-starting the whole plan. He was the target. Faye then agreed to exchange her soul for his, which allowed Calvin to return while leaving her own body alive but empty. They could communicate with each other spiritually.

Why Does Calvin Make a Deal With Yog-Sothoth?

Calvin offers Yog-Sothoth a body for a body. He’s willing to give up his own body if it means Faye can become whole again. Faye initially disagrees because she understands the consequences. If she lets Yog-Sothoth take Calvin’s body, it could doom Arkham, but Calvin no longer cares at this point. He only wants to be with her.

Long story short, Yog-Sothoth accepts the deal. Faye receives her soul back, but she isn’t happy for long. Calvin begins turning gray and worms enter his body, which only means Yog-Sothoth is beginning to take control of him.

Was Yog-Sothoth Manipulating Faye and Calvin?

When you get to the end of The Sinking City 2, you can see that Faye and Calvin get played like a fiddle by Yog-Sothoth.

Earlier in the story, Faye experiences visions and dreams related to the portal, which I believe is Yog-Sothoth’s way of influencing her and guiding both of them toward the Book of Dreaming. Because, you know, Faye is a Dreamer, someone who can travel between different dimensions of reality. Through her, Yog-Sothoth can move freely in their world.

Well, that whole portal thing somehow reminded me of the black hole in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

What you should understand here is that Yog-Sothoth comprehends how far Faye and Calvin will go for each other. So their love becomes the weakness the god exploits.

Why Is Arkham Flooded?

It all started when Professor Lake discovered structures related to the Elder Things beneath Arkham. He activated a device that opened a portal to Yog-Sothoth’s dimension.

And it wasn’t just water, horrendous creatures came through with it. Professor Lake’s lover eventually closed the portal, but the damage had already been done. They couldn’t undo it at that point.

What Happens to Faye and Calvin at the End?

Faye gets her soul back and becomes whole again. They’re delighted that they’re finally together, but that doesn’t last long. Calvin begins to turn gray as worms enter his body.

This means Yog-Sothoth is corrupting him to his core. By the final scene, Faye has also turned gray, which means both of them have fallen under Yog-Sothoth’s control while they share a kiss.

What Does The Sinking City 2 Ending Mean?

In the final scene, Faye and Calvin become permanently gray-looking. This means they are possessed somehow by this unholy entity as it appears in its true form and Arkham is destroyed at the same time. At that point, the darkest part is that they are smiling.

My Opinion on the Ending

At the end of the day, I must say Calvin isn’t a villain just because he loves Faye. I believe he allows his grief and love to define his morals to the point where he sees only one person’s life as mattering and that’s Faye. This is pure selfishness. It shows one shouldn’t let their desires blind them to their responsibility toward everyone else.
