The Ultimate Gothic Remake Fire Mage Guide (& The Trial of Fire Walkthrough)

Becoming a pure Gothic 1 Remake Fire Mage turns you into a walking god, but the path there is full of specific skill requirements and a few nasty bugs that can ruin your playthrough. This Gothic guide covers exactly how to get your first runes, pass the Trial of Fire Quest, and build the ultimate caster.
What You’ll Read:
Gothic Remake Fire Mage Requirements
You cannot just walk into the castle and demand a Fire Mage robe. Before Corristo even considers you for the initiation, you must hit Level 10. You also need to learn two specific crafting skills. If you do not have these unlocked, the Fire Mage path closes. Here is everything you need:
- Join the Old Camp: The Fire Mage route belongs entirely to the Old Camp. Do not officially join the New Camp or Swamp Camp as your main faction.
- Alchemy: Learn alchemy from Damarok in the Old Camp for 100 ore and 10 Learning Points (LP).
- Scroll Scribing (Inscription): Learn inscription from Torrez or Milten for 10 LP.
- Mana: Invest your LP to get your baseline Mana to around 20 or 30 early on.
- Strength: Push this to around 50 so you can actually wield a decent backup melee weapon before your magic carries you.
Read our Admission to the Old Camp guide to learn how to join and continue your fire mage quest.
How to Become a Fire Mage
The game gives you exactly one shot to get this right. One wrong dialogue option will permanently lock you out of the mage path. Here is the exact route to get your robes.
Chapter 1: The Price of Magic Quest (Getting Early Magic)
You can grab your first spell almost immediately. Find Torrez around midday near the Old Camp market well. He gives you “The Price of Magic” quest. You need to gather two Wolf’s Claws and a piece of parchment.
- Parchment: Buy this from Graham near the north gate for 13 to 16 ore nuggets.
- Wolf’s Claws: Buy them from Mordrag for 7 to 8 nuggets each, or just hunt wolves north of the north gate.
Hand the items to Torrez and pay 5 LP to learn Rune Magic. Pick the Firebolt rune to start your build.

Chapter 3: The Trial of Fire (After the Orc Graveyard)
You have to wait until Chapter 3 to officially join the ranks. Finish the Orc Cemetery and speak to Thorus. He offers you a spot as a guard. Turn him down and say you want to be a mage instead.
Head to Corristo in the castle and ask him to become a Fire Mage. He will reject you. Next, talk to Milten to get the “Rituals of the Order of Fire” book, or steal the book from the Fire Mages’ alchemy lab. Read the book.
As I mentioned before, you need to know Alchemy and Scroll Scribing before continuing here. Once you did, go to Corristo and demand the Trial of Fire. Now, you have to give the correct answers to continue.

Corristo Questions Correct Answers
First of all, save your game before taking this step. Corristo only gives you one chance to answer correctly. If you fail, he locks you out of the Fire Mages forever. Once he tests you on Alchemy and Scribbling, you must give the following answers in order:
- Q1: “Why do you want to join the Order of Fire?”
- A: I want to bring about justice and help people.”
- Q2: What is the most important quality a mage must have?
- A: “It’s willpower.”
Once you answer Corristo’s questions correctly, he gives you two Pray to Innos scrolls and sends you on a quest to reignite two holy sites of Innos.
Trial of Fire Shrine Locations
Corristo gives you the task of enlightening two Innos shrines with the Pray to Innos scroll to complete your trial. Here is where you can find each:
First Shrine: This one is hidden behind a waterfall. Just follow the river left of the Old Camp’s main entrance toward the Old Mine. Swim through the base of the waterfall to get to the cave behind it. You will find the shrine there. Equip your “Pray to Innos” scroll and light it there.

Second Shrine: Head to the cliff where you found the first of the Stone Focuses. There is a Fire Lizard here, protecting the shrine. Kill it and get to the shrine.

Return to Corristo once both shrines are lit and tell him that you have rekindled the altars. He then invites you to perform your initiation ritual. You go upstairs, take some vows. That’s it. Congratulations! You have finished the Trial of Fire, and you are now officially a Fire Mage.
How to Fix the Trial of Fire Bug
I know many players, including myself and probably you, got this annoying glitch during the ritual. The mages will randomly attack you with fireballs. Here are three solutions I found for this bug:
- Meat Bug Scroll (Most Reliable): Let them gather again, and when they threaten to hurt you, leave before they do. Then turn into a Meatbug outside the establishment and come back upstairs and re-transform again. So basically, you have to turn into a bug to fix the bug!
- Spam the Interact Button: Save your game first. Let them gather upstairs. Crouch down, roll dodge directly into Corristo, and rapidly press the interact button before they can react.

The Trial of Fire Rewards
Completing the Trial of Fire and finishing the initiation ceremony gives you everything you need to officially start the Fire Mage build:
- Fire Robe: Your official mage armor.
- Fire Mages Chambers Key: Access to the Fire Mage quarters in the Old Camp castle.
- Full Fire Mage status: Corristo becomes your main contact for advanced spell circles and higher-level rune training.
- 1,000 XP
Fire Mage Spells Tier List and Circles
Magic makes the game a breeze if you pick the right runes. Some spells wipe out entire camps. Others are complete garbage. Here is what you need to equip and what to ignore.
Early Game (Circles 1 & 2)
- Firebolt: The absolute best spell in the game. It only costs 1 mana. You can easily kite enemies with it. You will use this to melt weak mobs like Snappers all the way into the late game.
- Healing: This keeps you alive. It turns mana consumables into health items.
- Icebolt: Keep this handy for fire-resistant enemies. It deals less damage than Firebolt but freezes targets after a few hits.
- Light: A direct upgrade over standard torches.
Mid Game (Circles 3 & 4)
- Firestorm: This is your heavy hitter. It drains your mana fast, but it one-shots most enemies. Save it for tough targets like Orcs. Buy it from Cronos in the New Camp after you unlock Circle 4.
- Kugelblitz: A powerful area stun. Use it to kill fire-immune enemies like Demons. Watch out for objects that block the projectile.
- Spells to Skip: Do not buy Fireball, Pyrokinese, or Lightning. Fireball locks you into terrible combat animations. Pyrokinese and Lightning are completely useless. Fist of Wind lacks raw damage. Iceblock is far too slow to cast.
Late Game (Circles 5 & 6)
The late game breaks entirely once you hit the 5th and 6th circles. You speak to Xardas and become a god among mortals. You unlock devastating magic like Fire Rain to wipe out anything left breathing.
Gothic Remake Fire Mage Tips
Spells drain your resources fast. You need a solid strategy to maintain your mana and keep your pockets full.
How to Keep Your Mana Pool Full Without Potions
You must consume items to restore your mana bar. Potions work great later, but you need a cheaper option first. Head to the Swamp Camp and talk to Fortuno. He hands out three free joints every single day. Joints are the top method to restore mana in the early chapters.
Also, stick to your cheap Firebolt to stretch your resources. Heavy magic like Firestorm empties your mana bar in just three casts during the mid-game.
Easy Ore and XP Farming for Mages
You can double your experience points with a simple trick. Knock an enemy down to the ground and then finish them off. Need quick cash? Target the Swamp Camp Templars. They carry Guardian Blades. These weapons sell for a massive amount of ore. You can farm these guys as early as Chapter 1 with just your Firebolt. Lure a Templar out of the camp, away from his friends, and burn him down.
That’s everything there is to know about Gothic 1 Remake Fire Mage. But I know things can get complicated fast. So ask me your questions in the comments. I’ll read every last one.
FAQ
Can you join the New Camp or Swamp Camp and still become a Fire Mage?
No. You must choose the Old Camp. Picking the New Camp or Swamp Camp permanently blocks the Fire Mage route.
What happens if you open the sealed letter?
You lose out on 100 XP. Keep it sealed and hand it straight to Milten.
Does Firebolt damage scale well into the late game?
It holds up decently against standard NPCs. The real value is the cost. It only uses 1 mana. You can easily kill weaker enemies like Snappers without losing resources.
