Valheim Memorial Coal: Where to Get & How to Use It

With the update 1.0 of Valheim, you now have a new item to play with. Actually, it is not regular fuel, and it cannot be used in normal crafting. It is called Memorial Coal.

You need 3 Valheim Memorial Coal to go to a Memorial site to summon a Fallen Warrior. Its loot is worth the fight, so try to find your own Memorial Coal with my help. In fact, this item is mainly useful once you start farming the new Deep North essences.

Where to Get Memorial Coal in Valheim?

The main place to get Memorial Coal is Morkhalla in the Deep North. Inside Morkhalla, you can find it from:

  • Memorial Coal piles
  • Firepits and braziers
  • Krigen enemies (with a 20% chance to drop 1 Memorial Coal)

The Coal piles and other destructible sources are limited. Therefore, they are great for your first few pieces but not ideal for long-term farming.

Krigen are more important because they make Memorial Coal effectively renewable. If you are already clearing Morkhalla, it is worth killing them instead of rushing past. Try to leave with at least 3 Memorial Coal. That is exactly what you need for one summon.

For a better encounter with this enemy, it is good to have the Bronze Protection Idol to upgrade your Armor and Shields.

How to Use Valheim Memorial Coal?

Take 3 Memorial Coal to a Memorial Site in the Deep North. You may also see those locations referred to as Ancient Altars.

Use the Coal at the altar to summon a Fallen Warrior. Here are the drops of the Fallen Warrior:

  • Frostfire Essence: 50% Chance
  • Thunderblood Essence: 50% Chance

These are separate rolls, which means a Fallen Warrior can drop nothing, one essence, or both at the same time.

In other words, if you burn through three Memorial Coal and get no essence, it does not necessarily mean something went wrong. You may simply have missed both drops.

Best Memorial Coal Farming Loop

The best loop to farm Memorial Coal is something like this:

Explore Morkhalla > break Coal piles and braziers > kill Krigen > collect 3 or more Memorial Coal > return to a Memorial Site > summon a Fallen Warrior

You can reuse the same Memorial site, so you do not need to find a new altar for every summon. If you are farming Frostfire Essence and Thunderblood Essence, I would focus on Krigen after clearing the regular Coal deposits because they are a renewable part of the Memorial Coal farm.
