Valheim Cheated Item: Why Your Items Say Cheated and How to Fix It

A Valheim cheated item is anything the game believes came from cheats. You can spot it by a grey line in the tooltip saying it was summoned through cheating means. Carry one and your achievements stop, but the item itself still works like normal. The fix depends on how the item got there:
- If you picked it up, throw out every cheated stack and achievements come back.
- Anything crafted from a cheated material is cheated too, so check what you made recently.
- If your character ran a cheat command and you play on Steam, yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway opts you back in.
- If you never cheated and drops still show the tag, it’s a known 1.0 bug. Iron Gate says a patch is coming.

What Is a Cheated Item in Valheim?
Valheim 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026 with achievements, and Iron Gate added a system to keep cheaters from earning them. Anything you create with the spawn command gets flagged. The icon and stats of a cheated item look exactly like a clean one, so that tooltip line is the only real way to tell them apart.
If a clean character picks one up, they enter a temporary cheat state and can’t unlock achievements until every cheated item leaves their inventory. It’s a much bigger deal if you run the commands yourself. The game asks you to confirm with confirmcheats first, and a few commands like freefly don’t count at all.

Each flag works a little differently:
| What Gets Flagged | Cause | How Long It Lasts |
|---|---|---|
| The item | Spawned with commands, or crafted from cheated materials | Forever |
| Any player holding it | A cheated item in the inventory | Until all cheated items are gone |
| Your character | Most devcommands, even ones used before 1.0 | Permanent, unless you use the Patch 1.0.12 command on Steam |
| Your world save | The same commands, used on that world | Permanent |
Why Are My Items Cheated in Valheim?
The spawn command isn’t the only cause. Players on Reddit and YouTube have been testing what else flags loot, and a few of the answers are harsh.
Cheated Loot From Kills and Commands
These findings come from one player’s tests, not Iron Gate, so treat them as a solid guide until the devs say more.
- With god or nocost turned on, every kill drops cheated loot. The fly command does the same.
- Wood and ore you gather stay clean, even with those commands active.
- Cheated gear in your inventory taints kill loot. That includes arrows, and even food you haven’t eaten.
- A cheated axe or pickaxe flags whatever it chops or mines.
Oddly enough, killall is safe. Its drops stay clean as long as no toggle command is running, and a cheated Megingjord or trinket won’t flag new loot either.
How the Cheated Tag Spreads to Clean Items
Once a cheated item touches a stack or a recipe, it drags the clean stuff down with it.
Put one cheated wood into a stack of 49 and all 50 become cheated. A Portal built with cheated Fine Wood is cheated as well, and when you tear it down, every material you get back carries the tag.
Smelters won’t wash it out either. Cheated wood turns into cheated coal in a Charcoal Kiln, and cheated Tin gives you cheated Bronze.
Stations built with nocost are the worst case. Anything you craft or smelt at that Workbench or Blast Furnace comes out cheated, even with legit materials. Some players think repairs there can flag your gear too.
On a shared server, watch the community chest. From the reports I’ve read, that’s where one bad stack usually reaches the whole group.
Valheim Cheated Items Without Cheating (1.0 Bug)
If you play vanilla with no mods or commands and still see the tag, you aren’t imagining it. Since launch, players on fresh worlds and dedicated servers have reported clean drops showing up already flagged:
- A Greyling dropped wood and resin that were both cheated.
- Eikthyr’s drop came out cheated on a brand new, unmodded world.
- A mead pulled out of the Fermenter got the tag right away.
- A friend dropped some leather, and the whole stack of 30 turned cheated after pickup.
It happens a lot in the Deep North, where a stack of wood can flip to cheated after enough pickups.
An Iron Gate developer said that the team found the problem and will patch it soon. Patch 1.0.12 doesn’t fix it, and nobody knows yet if the fix will clean items that already have the tag.
A server restart stopped new flagged drops for some groups, but not all of them. If achievements matter to you, I’d hold off on boss fights until the patch is out. Nobody wants to redo a boss over a tooltip.
How to Remove Cheated Items in Valheim
- Hover over your items and read the tooltips. A cheated stack looks normal until you see that grey line.
- Throw out every cheated item. Check the chests you took materials from, plus anything you crafted since then.
- Watch for the popup. On Steam, Patch 1.0.12 added a message that tells you when achievements are back on.
- If the materials are too valuable to toss, put them in an Obliterator. One player found it gives back clean coal.
- On a server, restart it if fresh drops keep coming out cheated, and don’t pass flagged materials to friends.
How to Get Achievements Back After Using Cheats in Valheim
Iron Gate added a new devcommand in Patch 1.0.12 on September 11, 2026. It lets you opt back into achievements even if you used devcommands or mods, and the studio basically leaves it to your honesty. For now it only works on Steam, with other platforms getting it in an upcoming hotfix.
- Enable the console. You can switch it on in the settings menu, or add -console to Valheim’s launch options in Steam.
- Press F5 in game to open it.
- Type devcommands and press Enter.
- Type yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway as one word, with no spaces.

The command has limits, though:
- It doesn’t remove the tag from cheated items.
- It won’t clear a temporary cheat state, so you still have to toss those items.
Does Hammer Mode Disable Achievements in Valheim?
Yes, but only while it’s on. Iron Gate counts Hammer Mode as a temporary cheat that blocks certain achievements, so switch it off and you can earn them again.

The modifiers players have tested seem fine. A player made a world with a 3x resource rate and no portal limits, and his first achievement still popped the moment he landed.
Mods are a different story, since the Patch 1.0.12 notes group them with devcommands. Some mods on Nexus Mods remove the cheated tag from items, which the official command can’t do. They only work on PC, though, because the console versions don’t support mods.
