How to Kill Bjorn Valheim’s Black Forest Bear (And What to Craft With It)

Valheim Bjorn is just the game’s internal name for the Bear, the shaggy menace roaming the Black Forest. It’s also the ID you type into the console if you want to spawn one yourself. Valheim 1.0 nerfed the bear hard, cutting both its health and how often it shows up. Here’s everything current on Bjorn: How to actually beat one without losing half your gear and what to craft from it.
What You’ll Read:
What Is Bjorn in Valheim
Bjorn is the Bear’s in-game name. Bjorn literally means “bear” in Scandinavian languages. So that’s a solid, simple name, I guess.
Two other things share the name, so don’t mix them up. Bjorn_spiritcaller is a separate 1.0 creature with 1,500 health, summoned by the new Spirit Caller staff. And if you’ve run into a friendly skeleton named Bjorn handing out quests, that’s from Adventure Map, a fan-made overhaul, not vanilla Valheim.

Pro-Tip: Bjorn is also the console name if you’ve got devcommands on and want to spawn one yourself: spawn Bjorn 1 1. That last number sets the star level; for example, 3 gets you a 2-star bear.
Where Bjorn Spawns
Bjorn only spawns in the Black Forest. The game rolls for one roughly every 2,000 seconds, with a 15% chance during the day and 20% at night. Only one bear can be active from that check at a time.
Star levels also differ by time of day. Daytime spawns are 1-star max, but night rolls can reach 2-star because the level range increases and there’s a 10% chance to level up on spawn.
| Time | Spawn check | Level range | Active max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day | 15% every 2,000s | 1–2 (0–1★) | 1 |
| Night | 20% every 2,000s | 1–3 (0–2★) | 1 |
Bjorn Resistances and Attacks
Bjorn’s current health is 500 (Iron Gate lowered it from the old 800 pre-1.0). Resistances didn’t change: blunt, pierce, and frost are resisted, fire is a weakness, and spirit does nothing. Slash isn’t resisted at all, which makes it your cleanest damage type.
| Damage type | Effect |
|---|---|
| Fire | Weak |
| Blunt / Pierce / Frost | Resistant |
| Spirit | Immune |
| Chop / Pickaxe | No effect |
| Slash | Neutral |

Bjorm has four types of attacks. Bite hits hardest per instance, but Slam is the one you need to watch. It’s on a longer cooldown but covers a wide radius and can’t be sidestepped the way the others can.
| Attack | Damage | Range | Cooldown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bite | 55 Pierce | 4m, 45° arc | 4s |
| Claws | 50 Slash + 40 Chop | 5.5m, 45° arc | 4s |
| Swipe (L/R/combo) | 25 Slash + 40 Chop per hit | 5.5m, 45° arc | 4s |
| Slam | 50 Blunt + 40 Chop + 40 Pickaxe | 2.5m radius | 12s |
How to Kill Bjorn
Fire is the whole strategy. Bjorn won’t come within 3 meters of a lit torch or campfire, so just hold one to receive zero damage. Well, honestly, it still swings sometimes, but it flinches away mid-attack and usually whiffs. Bring a slash weapon, since it’s the only damage type Bjorn doesn’t resist; an axe or sword works better here than a bow, since arrows eat the pierce penalty.
If you want a lazier kill, wall the bear into a box with a Workbench and some wood walls, then drop a campfire inside. It’ll cook to death while you repair whatever it damages trying to get out. Keep the hammer in repair mode and stay clear of Greydwarf spawners, or you’ll have company.

Bjorn Drops
| Drop | Chance | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Bear Paw | 100% | 1 |
| Bear Meat | 100% | 2–3 |
| Bear Hide | 100% | 4–5 |
| Bear Trophy | 10% | 1 |
What to Craft From Bjorn Materials
The Bear Set needs a Workbench (level 2+) and gives Berserk when you wear all three pieces: +30% health regen, +15% stamina regen, +10% slash and chop damage, in exchange for slightly weaker blunt/slash/pierce defense.
| Item | Q1 Recipe | Armor |
|---|---|---|
| Headdress | 5 Hide + 1 Trophy | 7 |
| Patterns (chest) | 5 Hide + 2 Paw + 4 Blueberries | 7 |
| Loincloth (legs) | 5 Hide + 4 Blueberries | 7 |
| Paws of the Bear (fist weapon) | 2 Hide + 2 Paw + 4 Leather Scraps | 25 Slash |
Full Q1 set: 21 armor, 11 weight, and at least 4 bear kills for the hide alone.

The Bronze Pendant (Forge: 5 Bronze, 1 Trophy, 3 Ruby) gives +25% stamina regen for 60s once you reach 50 Adrenaline. New in 1.0: Pulled Bear, a Cauldron food made from Cooked Bear Meat, Carrot, and Blueberries. (Finally something to do with your stockpile beyond raw snacking like a caveman!)
FAQ
Is Bjorn different from the Bear?
No. Bjorn is just the internal name the game uses for the Bear. You’ll only see it in console commands or item IDs. In normal gameplay, it’s always just “Bear.”
Did Valheim 1.0 change Bjorn?
Yes. The patch notes confirmed reduced health and a lower Black Forest spawn chance.
Does Bjorn attack Viles?
No. Despite both being bear-type enemies, Bjorn and the undead Vile ignore each other completely, even in the same biome.
