Gothic Remake Shadowbeast Guide: Great and Frost Easy Kill

The Shadowbeast in the Gothic Remake is a tough and massive scary creature with a large scale. You shouldn’t fight one unless you’re 100% prepared. With that being said, here’s how to locate the Great and Frost Shadowbeasts and defeat them.

Gothic Remake: Great Shadowbeast Location and How to Kill It

When you speak to Ur-Shak in the Banner of Banners quest, you’re tasked with hunting down the Great Shadowbeast and bringing him its horn. The Great Shadowbeast lurks in a cave southeast of the Old Camp. Just like the name suggests, this is no ordinary Shadowbeast. It’s much stronger than the normal one.

Pro tip: To maximize experience points, make sure to kill all normal Shadowbeasts on the map before talking to Ur-Shak. After you speak with him, stronger Shadowbeasts replace the standard ones in the game. So that way you can kill them too and double the available experience.

The Stone Golem Srategy

Right off the bat, the Shrink Monster scroll doesn’t work on him. So, don’t bother. With that out of the way, if melee combat is what you’d rather do, summoning is a very effective strategy against the Great Shadowbeast. In order to do that, teleport to Xardas‘ tower and purchase the Summon Golem scroll for the price of 15 Mana.

Then head to the cave where the beast is located. Before you enter the cave, make sure your HP is full and you have a couple of healing potions with you. Now it’s time to enter the cave.

Equip the scroll and summon the Stone Golem. Go ahead and run past the Great Shadowbeast so the Stone Golem draws its attention.

While the creature is distracted, it’s time for you to hit it with your strongest weapon. Scar’s Sword (one-handed weapon) or Innos’ Rage (two-handed weapon) can come in handy here. The Stone Golem likely gets destroyed by the beast too, but as long as this helps you kill the creature, that’s fine.

The Fist of Wind Spell Strategy

Another great strategy to deal with this unholy monster is the use of the Fist of Wind spell. It couldn’t be simpler as a matter of fact. Enter the cave and cast the Fist of Wind spell when the Great Shadowbeast appears. Each time you do that, it falls down, and that’s your window to land some two or three solid hits. Gomez‘s Innos’ Rage would work really well here.

The River Cheese Method

There’s also another way for those of you who are struggling with the Great Shadowbeast, especially on higher difficulties. Get inside the cave and lure the monster out onto the river. I don’t know if this is a kind of glitch or something, but the beast becomes stuck in the water. This allows you to defeat the monster without taking any damage.

While I know this isn’t the fairest approach, I agree that the enemy feels way too overpowered even on Gothic difficulty, which is the second easiest difficulty, let alone on higher settings. For those veteran Gothic players out there, they know that in the original you could deal with them with far fewer headaches than in the remake.

Other Tips to Defeat the Great Shadowbeast

Firebolt has no effect and is useless against Shadowbeasts. Instead, you should use Ice and Shock scrolls to defeat them. The Tier 2 Lightning Orb spell is particularly useful because it stunlocks most enemies to death. An alternative spell combination is to cast Fire Storm and hit the beast with lightning to stun it, then casting another Fire Storm. Keep doing it until the creature is dead.

The Great Shadowbeast Rewards

Once you’ve dealt with the Great Shadowbeast, you can loot the following items off him:

  • Horn of a Great Shadowbeast
  • Shadowbeast’s skin
  • Raw meat (4)

On top of all that, you gain 1,000 experience points, which is definitely a plus.

Gothic Remake: Frost Shadowbeast Location and How to Kill It

If you haven’t done the Temple of Innos side quest already, you likely haven’t found the Frost Shadowbeast yet. It spawns right before the waterfall you’re supposed to swim under in order to enter the temple. Follow the quest until you get to the part I mentioned.

As far as defeating it is concerned, pretty much all the tips I mentioned earlier apply to the Frost Shadowbeast, too. When you finally take care of this monster, loot it to get the following items:

  • Shadowbeast’s horn
  • Frost Shadowbeast’s skin
  • Raw meat (4)

Plus 400 experience points, which is a lot less than what you get for the Great Shadowbeast.
