Gothic Remake Ore Armor Guide: Get the Best Armor Early

Here’s how to grab the Ancient Ore Armor, which is the very best armor in Gothic Remake, plus the best one-handed and two-handed swords all in Chapter 1.

How to Get Scar’s Sword

Scar’s sword is the strongest one-handed weapon you can get early in the Gothic remake. It deals 85 damage, which completely outclasses any other weapon you will find until the very late game.

To use it, you need 70 strength, which means you should invest your early skill points into strength and reach around level seven or eight. If you need to build up your stats, you can work your way up by beating weaker NPCs for their gear and experience. You can also grab the game’s best crossbow from Scar.

The sword is located in the castle throne room within the inner parts of the Old Camp. To enter this restricted area, you must first complete A Letter from the Fire Mages. It’s best done late at night because the guards will slowly fall asleep while at their posts. However, Gomez and his bodyguards, Scar and Arto, don’t go to bed at the same time.

There are two ways to go about this. The first way is if you want to avoid a fight entirely, you can simply pickpocket Scar right after finishing the dialogue for Admission to the Old Camp.

If you prefer combat, show up around midnight and wait for the throne room to clear out. Sometimes Scar or Arto stays, sometimes both try to leave. If both try to leave, initiate a conversation with Scar so Arto walks upstairs.

Remember to save your game before attacking. Defeat Scar quickly before he can alert nearby guards. He’s incredibly tough and can one-shot you. If you’re having trouble, just unlock the Acrobatics skill so you can perform a dodge roll. Fall damage is also halved.

All in all, this can make the fight much easier. When you loot him, you get: Scar’s Sword and Crossbow of War (one of the best early crossbows).

How to Get the Ancient Ore Armor Early

Now that you’ve taken care of Scar, it’s time to deal with Arto. Go ahead and engage him. You should be able to quickly take care of him as well. Loot him to get: Arto’s Sword and Ring of Lesser Dexterity. Sleep and return to the throne room at 11:00 PM to catch Gomez before he tries to leave his throne at midnight.

Follow him up to the upper floor and fight. Keep in mind that you don’t kill Gomez here. Just down and loot him. When you return to the castle the following day and Gomez sees you, it’s not like anything happened! He won’t remember the encounter. When you loot Gomez, you get the following items:

How to Pickpocket Gomez’s Key Without Fighting

Another way to get Gomez’s key without fighting is to pickpocket him. First, make sure you have leveled up your pickpocket skill at least once. When you’re ready to make the attempt, you can target him while he’s walking around, or you can use the throne method.

To use the throne method, simply squat directly in front of him to make him stand up. As he goes back to sit down, look for the stealth eye icon to change color (such as red or orange) to confirm the prompt. Then attempt the pickpocket. It’s highly recommended to save your game before trying this in case you get caught.

Finally, sleep until daytime to ensure the upper manor is entirely empty of NPCs. Head to Gomez’s bedroom on the upper floor and use the keys to unlock the chests containing a Fire Amulet and the Ancient Ore Armor. If the bedroom door’s master key bugs out, you can alternatively lockpick it or wait until 9:00 AM to slip inside directly behind Velaya.

There are two chests in the room. One in front of the bed and the other to the right side of the bed. In the former, there are goodies like the Amulet of Flames, and in the latter lies the Ancient Ore Armor.

When you grab it, the Armor-geddon achievement/trophy is also unlocked.
