DLC Ashes of War

Elden Ring Ash of War Aspects of the Crucible: Wings

Getting Aspects of the Crucible is a test of its own, so let’s break down exactly where to find it, how to claim it, and how to make it your new favorite tool of destruction.

How to Get the Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings

This Ash of War is a guaranteed drop from a single, specific enemy: the Black Knight Edredd. He’s not a boss with a fog gate. He’s a powerful field boss found inside the Fort of Reprimand in the Scadu Altus region of the Elden Ring DLC

Here is the step-by-step path to get to him:

1. Reaching Scadu Altus

First, you need to get to the Scadu Altus area of the Realm of Shadow. This requires you to progress through the DLC’s main story.

You’ll need to complete Castle Ensis and defeat its boss, Rellana, Twin Moon Knight. After her defeat, you can access a new section of the map which leads towards the Shadow Keep and the wider Scadu Altus region.

2. Finding the Fort of Reprimand

Once you’re in Scadu Altus, you need to head to the Fort of Reprimand. Here’s how:

From the Castle Ensis area, head southeast and follow the dirt path. The fort is located south of the Moorth Ruins.

As you approach the fort, you’ll likely encounter a Ghostflame Dragon guarding the entrance.

Veteran Tip: You don’t have to fight this dragon. It’s a tough, optional encounter. Just ride past it on Torrent and head straight for the fort’s main gate, which is wide open.

3. Navigating the Fort

The Fort of Reprimand is a vertical dungeon filled with Horned Warriors and Messmer’s soldiers.

  • Climb to the top. Your goal is to reach the highest floor.
  • You’ll find a Site of Grace near the top. Rest here to prepare for the fight ahead.
  • From the grace, head southeast and enter the large dining room. This is where Black Knight Edredd awaits.

Boss Fight Strategy: Black Knight Edredd

This is where it gets interesting. As soon as you step into the dining room, Black Knight Edredd will immediately use the Aspects of the Crucible: Wings on you. He is aggressive and doesn’t give you time to prepare.

Key Attacks and Strategy:

  • The Opening Dive: As you enter, he will likely launch himself at you with the skill. Roll toward him to dodge it. This will put you right behind him for an easy backstab or a charged heavy attack.
  • Low Poise: This is his biggest weakness. Edredd barely has any poise. This means you can stagger him quickly with heavy attacks, jumping attacks, or a few hits from a fast weapon. Be aggressive to interrupt his attacks.
  • Punish His Landing: After he performs a plunge attack, he has a significant recovery window. Roll away from the impact, then immediately retaliate with a strong attack.
  • Dealing with Combos: He has a long, sweeping combo that can be tricky to dodge. The best way to avoid it is to roll toward him, not away or sideways. Rolling into his attacks will often place you behind him, making his follow-up swings miss.

Defeat him, and you will automatically receive the Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings as a reward.

The Ash of War: What It Does and How to Use It

You’ve earned it, now let’s break down exactly what this skill does.

Lore and Description

You are essentially learning the signature move of the Crucible Knights, an iconic ability that has been a fan-favorite since the base game.

Weapon Compatibility

This Ash of War is compatible with a wide range of weapons:

  • Swords and Polearms: It can be applied to most swords and polearms (like spears and halberds) that are capable of thrusting.
  • Exclusions: It cannot be used on Colossal-class weapons (Colossal Swords, Colossal Weapons).

Full List: This includes Daggers, Throwing Blades, Straight Swords, Greatswords, Light Greatswords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Twinblades, Spears, Halberds, Great Spears, Heavy Thrusting Swords, and Great Katanas.

The Skill’s Effect

When you use the skill on the standard weapons, your character grows a pair of ethereal golden wings, leaps into the air, and then dives forward at your target with a powerful thrusting attack.

If you use this skill while wielding a Twinblade, the attack changes. Instead of a thrust, you perform a spinning charge, dealing damage over multiple hits as you close the distance.

Stats and Synergy

Here is the list:

  • FP Cost: The skill costs 22 FP per use.
  • Affinity: It grants the equipped weapon the Sacred affinity, making its damage scale partially with Faith and deal Holy damage.
  • Stance Damage: This skill deals significant stance damage, which varies by weapon type:
WeaponDamage
Colossal Sword24
Greatsword, Light Greatsword, Heavy Thrusting Sword, Great Spear, Great Katana22
Twinblade, Straight Sword, Katana, Spear, Halberd20
Thrusting Sword16
Dagger12
Throwing Dagger8
  • Crucible Knight Armor: Wearing pieces of the Crucible Knight armor set (like the Crucible Tree or Crucible Axe sets) will enhance the power of this Ash of War.

Veteran Tips: What I Know

This skill is fantastic for initiating fights, as it has a massive range and can close the gap on an enemy in an instant.

This Ash of War deals a single, powerful hit (or a multi-hit spin for Twinblades). Talismans that boost skill damage, like the Shard of Alexander, will increase its damage significantly. The Spear Talisman also works well, as the thrusting attack counters enemies while they are attacking.

In PvE, it’s a powerful tool that can one-shot many standard enemies and chunk bosses. In PvP, the dive can be predicted and parried, so use it wisely to punish mistakes rather than as a spammable opener.
