Where Is Stone in the Gothic Remake: Between a Rock and a Hard Place Stone Quest Guide

The Gothic Remake Stone is everyone’s favorite Old Camp blacksmith, but his quest is a total nightmare and filled with bugs. Where is the Stone location? How do you save him in the Between a Rock and a Hard Place Quest? Not to worry. I’ve got all of your questions covered in this Gothic Remake guide. Here is how to find him, complete his quests, and get the best armor upgrades without losing your mind.

Who is Stone in the Gothic Remake?

Stone is a veteran guard and the master blacksmith of the Old Camp. He stays completely out of camp politics and tries to focus purely on his forge, but he later realizes he cannot stay out of the game. You will interact with him across multiple chapters for essential gear upgrades and side quests.

Gothic Remake Stone Location (Before & After Quest)

You will struggle to locate this guy. His spot depends entirely on your story progression (and game bugs!). He starts in the Old Camp as their main blacksmith. You can check out Stone’s location below:

Gomez eventually throws him into the dungeon cells in Chapter 5. This will lead you to the Between a Rock and a Hard Place quest (which you can read about further below). After the Stone quest, he will move to the Swamp Camp to work in Darrion’s forge. You can check out his location below:

Important Note: If you don’t get Darrion to forge the dungeon key in the Stone quest, he wanders off to the New Camp tavern instead of Swamp Camp. He just hangs out there and hands over weapon blueprints instead of armor tweaks. Learn more in the walkthrough below.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place Quest Walkthrough

In Chapter 5, Stone gets thrown into the Old Camp Dungeons because Gomez becomes paranoid and suspects everyone is a traitor. You have to bust him out. I recommend busting into the prison around midnight, when most guards are asleep. Check out the Dungeons location below:

Walk behind Santino and sneak into prison. Make sure no one notices you. Go straight down the flight of stairs and up the next one, and take a left. Take another left and go to the room on the right at the back of the cellar.

Go through the next two barred doors and open the wooden door on the left. You should now be in the prison cells, and Stone is in the first cell on the left.

Keep in mind you need Santino’s key to open these doors. Here’s how to get it: Grab the Deed during the Focus in the Mountain Fortress quest with Lester. Trade it to Santino, and he hands over the prison key plus 1,000 ore.

How to Open Stone’s Prison Cell

You have three ways to open the cell door. I recommend doing the second one. In the second one, Stone moves to Swamp Camp to work under Darrion, where he can forge you Ore armor and Thorus armor upgrades. Although he hates Darrion and the idea of working for him. (No judging!)

1. Lockpicking: The simplest (not the easiest!) method is to lockpick the cell door. Here’s the correct lockpick solution that worked for me in level 64 lockpicking:

  1. Plate 1 → Right x3
  2. Plate 2 → Right x1
  3. Plate 1 → Right x1
  4. Plate 2 → Right x1
  5. Plate 1 → Right x1
  6. Plate 2 → Right x6
  7. Plate 3 → Left x1
  8. Plate 1 → Right x1
  9. Plate 2 → Right x2
  10. Plate 3 → Left x1
  11. Plate 1 → Right x1
  12. Plate 2 → Right x1
  13. Plate 3 → Left x1
  14. Plate 1 → Right x1
  15. Plate 3 → Left x1
  16. Plate 1 → Right x1
  17. Plate 4 → Right x1
  18. Plate 1 → Right x1
  19. Plate 5 → Right x3

Bug Warning: Do not use this method if you are in Chapter 5. Lockpicking Stone’s cell in Chapter 5 has a nasty bug that turns him hostile the second the door clicks open and ruins the quest. I am leaving the solution here only for those still in Chapter 4 who want to try it early. Everyone else, skip to Option 2.

2. Darrion: Option two is asking Darrion for help. Talk to Stone through the bars, then head to the Swamp Camp. Ask Darrion to forge a duplicate key. You have to sleep for a full 24 hours while he crafts it. Check out Darrion’s location in the Swamp Camp below:

3. Gomez: The last option is stealing the key straight from Gomez. It works, but pulling off the theft is tough.

How to Safely Escape the Old Camp Prison with Stone

The entire Old Camp turns hostile if they spot you breaking Stone out of prison. You need a solid strategy to get him out alive. Here are three ways to do it. The second one is my favorite, but if you are rage-filled with this quest’s never-ending bugs, I recommend the third one.

Method 1: The Swamp Camp Teleport Glitch

This is the easiest workaround. Tell Stone to follow you. Then, use a teleport stone to jump to the Swamp Camp. Find a bed and sleep for a few hours. Wake up, walk around a bit, and Stone will magically catch up to you. You can also sprint out of the gate. Run until they stop chasing you, save your game, and reload. He will spawn right near the gate.

Method 2: The Mind Control Strategy

You have to get creative to avoid a massacre. Aggro Stone while he is still inside his cell. Lure him out of the dungeon before you officially speak to him. The guards stay friendly during this phase. Once he gets close to the exit, cast a Control spell on him. Walk his body outside the camp. Drop the spell, talk to him to update the quest, and lead him away.

Method 3: The Old Fashioned Genocide

Sometimes violence is the answer. Summon a golem or an army of skeletons to wipe out the courtyard. Xardas sells great summon scrolls for this. Clear the immediate area, then take the secret tunnel. Run to the tower on the left side of the fire mages. Follow that tunnel straight into the basement of the old building outside the camp.

Gothic Remake Stone Quest Rewards

Stone hooks you up big time after safely reaching the Swamp Camp. Talk to him once he settles in with Darrion. He offers you three different reward choices. You can take a special ring, a heavy two-handed sword, or an armor upgrade.

Pick the armor tweak. Stone applies a badass shadowbeast engraving to your Water armor. This turns your gear into the absolute best armor in the game. With this massive boost, I think you will be ready to go inside the Sleeper’s Temple.

Gothic Remake Stone Bug Fixes

I said it in the intro, and I will say it again: this quest is a nightmare of bugs. Here is how to fix them.

Stone Won’t Leave His Cell (Frozen, Not Hostile)

Save right there in the dungeon, then reload immediately. A hard reset usually kicks the script back into gear. If it does not work after two reloads, leave the dungeon, sleep for 24 hours, and come back.

Stone Ended Up in the New Camp Tavern

This happens when you skip the Darrion key route. Once he settles in the tavern, the armor upgrade is gone for good. He will hand you weapon blueprints instead. If you have a save before you opened the cell, reload it and do the Darrion route properly. That is the only real fix.

Stone Won’t Upgrade Your Armor

Two reasons this happens. First, you got kicked out as a Warder by Thorus. Go to Saturas, he will point you to Lee, do Lee’s quest to get reinstated, then come back. Second, you lockpicked the cell, and the upgrade dialogue never unlocked. ريالeload a pre-lockpick save if you have one.

Stone Is Hostile and Attacking You

Almost always caused by lockpicking his cell door. Once Stone is hostile, the quest is broken, and there is no in-game fix. You need a save from before it happened.

The Templar’s Blade: The Other Gothic Remake Stone Quest

Stone has another quest related to him in chapter 2. The Templar’s Blade quest starts when you speak with Gor Na Zar in the Old Camp. Stone wants a specific two-hander that Darrion made for one of the templars. To finish it, you need to head over to the Swamp Camp, talk to Darrion, prove your own smithing skills, and forge the blade yourself before delivering it back to Stone.

That’s everything you need to know about Stone the blacksmith in Gothic Remake. Are there more bugs you cannot fix? Write them in the comments, and I’ll try to find the fix for you.

FAQ

Can you find Stone in the New Camp?

Yes, but you do not want this to happen. It is a known bug. He hangs out in the tavern. He will just hand you a weapon blueprint instead of an armor upgrade.

Why won’t Stone upgrade your armor?

You probably triggered a script bug. The quest breaks if you open his cell in Chapter 5. He also needs access to a forge. If the game sends him to the New Camp, you lose the armor tweak.

Why is Stone mad at me when I try to upgrade armor?

You should join the New Camp to fix this. After being kicked out as a Warder by Thorus, go to Saturas, and he will direct you to Lee. Do his quest to rejoin the camp.

Can you spare Gomez during the breakout?

Technically, yes. But the logic is completely broken. You cannot talk to him peacefully. You have to wipe out the entire castle just to reach him. You can spare him after you kill his whole crew, but that makes zero sense.
