Mina the Hollower Jumpscares: Klumpy & Darkness Mechanics Explained

Yacht Club Games’ gothic action-adventure, Mina the Hollower, has taken the gaming world by storm. But while its Game Boy-inspired aesthetic feels reminiscent of classic Zelda titles, players are discovering that Tenebrous Isle hides some genuinely horrific secrets.

If you have been caught off guard by a sudden fright while playing, you experience the viral Mina the Hollower jumpscare mechanics. There are two entirely different ways the game catches players completely off guard: an optional, joke-telling stalker and a punishing environmental mechanic.

Mina the Hollower Jumpscare: Klumpy the Clown (Klumpy Dee)

The most notorious jumpscare in the game stems from an unassuming NPC named Klumpy (also referred to as Klumpy Dee). Located in Ossex (the central town on Tenebrous Isle), Klumpy hangs out just northeast of the town square’s main fountain.

At a glance, he looks like a bizarre critter wearing a mascot-style clown outfit, with a pair of sinister eyes. If you interact with him, he will offer to tell you some jokes.

Klumpy Dee: The Devil’s Bargain

Accepting Klumpy’s offer triggers a persistent, game-wide event. He warns you upfront: “If it doesn’t hurt, you’re not laughing hard enough. I’ll have you laughing all over the Isles soon. Just you wait!”

Once you agree, Klumpy becomes a permanent jump-scare engine for the rest of your playthrough. He will randomly burst into your game when you least expect it:

  • From the terrain: Tearing out of the ground or bushes while you are clearing grass in areas like Mourner’s Mile.
  • From fallen foes: Hopping directly out of an enemy’s carcass right after you defeat them.

When he ambushes you, the game plays a piercing shriek as Klumpy bares a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. After giving you a massive fright, he bursts into wild laughter and drops a corny, dark dad joke written in verse. For instance, early in the game, he might hit you with this execution-themed riddle:

“A noble lays in a peasant’s grave in Queensbury Crypt. What time was the execution? Severin’ o’clock sharp! HOOOOOHOHOO! Severin’!”

Fortunately, Klumpy cannot physically harm Mina. Even if you attack him with your weapon out of sheer panic, he simply takes it on the chin. His bizarre behavior is driven by a dark philosophy that life is tough and it is better to face terrifying disruptions with a sense of humor.

He will eventually bid you farewell with his signature rhyme: “Until next time! Try not to die! And do keep laughing, lest you cry!”

Can You Reverse Klumpy’s Curse?

The short answer is no, you cannot turn Klumpy off or undo the bargain through a traditional menu setting or a simple NPC interaction. Once you agree to his “Devil’s Bargain” in Ossex, Klumpy becomes a permanent gameplay modifier for the remainder of your current playthrough.

The Complete Darkness Jumpscare

If you have not spoken to Klumpy but still find yourself jumping out of your seat, you are likely falling victim to the game’s anti-idling darkness mechanic.

The community has documented a terrifying environmental hazard that occurs when Mina steps into absolute darkness. If you remain inside a pitch-black zone (such as the Molten Foundry) for too long without touching a source of light, the game begins to punish your hesitation.

Pro-Tip: If you are trying to explore pitch-black zones like the Molten Foundry to find hidden secrets, make sure to map out your nearest light sources before venturing into the dark to avoid the anti-idling fright.

First, the screen will begin pulsing a deep red color accompanied by an ominous heartbeat audio cue. If you fail to find an illuminated spot immediately, the tension culminates in a sudden jumpscare that has caught many exploratory players completely off guard.
