HUNGER Characters: Best Picks for Solo, PvP, and Teams

HUNGER has 6 characters, also known as the living, that you can choose from, each with different active and passive abilities. Today we are going to go over each of them, their abilities and skills, and what playstyle fits them the best.

Every HUNGER Character and Their Abilities

Let’s get down to business quickly and talk about our characters:

Gabriel, Good All-rounder and Rookie-Friendly

Gabriel was the Cuirassier in Napoleon’s army, a heavy cavalry soldier. This is also reflected in his kit. Gabriel has a mobility option in his passive, damage reduction as his tactical, and lifesteal in his ultimate. If you are a newbie to the world of HUNGER, Gabriel’s pretty simple kit allows you to explore the world and gives you a margin of error that you can come back from.

First, his passive Charge unlocks at level 3. HUNGER is a pretty slow-paced game that can take you up to an hour to do a single run, which draws a heavy contrast to other extraction shooters. Gabriel’s passive allows you to naturally pace yourself with the game and get used to its unique tempo. But that’s not all.

His passive is also a very crucial ability that allows him to reduce distance in PvP battles, or simply reposition and find a better angle or a suitable exit, giving newer players the luxury of more choices.

His tactical, Line Infantry, unlocked at level 6, is a ranged damage reduction ability lasting for 15 seconds that makes the difference between life and death. Again, very useful for beginners: if they find themselves in unfavorable situations, they can just use the tactical and run away or rush in and dispatch the enemy.

His Ultimate, Sadist, which is unlocked at level 9, allows him to heal 30% of the damage he deals for 15 seconds. This ability puts Gabriel as a solid choice for those who want to play an aggressive character; combining it with his tactical could make Gabriel into a very hard-to-kill monster in HUNGER PvP battle.

Eva, Perfect Solo Play Character

Eva, the vagabond huntress, fills the Rogue/Assassin archetype in this game, and her kit clearly demonstrates that as well. She isn’t made for tough head-to-head battles like Gabriel, and favors short battles that either kill the opponent or allow Eva to disengage.

Her Passive Marathon lets Eva run for a longer duration than other characters. This makes chasing her not practical and, on the flip side, turns Eva into a great chaser. Stamina is a resource that regenerates pretty slowly in the game, so her passive is very valuable.

On brand for an assassin, her tactical Lightfoot lets her move silently for 30 seconds, allowing her to sneak around without attracting too much attention to herself. This is the cornerstone of her identity as an assassin solo player; if other players are around her, their footsteps would reveal her position anyway, so even in a group, Eva operates alone and separately from her teammates.

Blinde, her ultimate, blinds all Living in her 5-meter vicinity for 3 seconds, allowing her to swiftly kill another living player or swiftly escape a situation. Paying attention to the fact that it works only on the living makes this ultimate a purely PvP ultimate, and not a good one at that due to its very limited range and low blind time.

Hugo, the Melee Specialist

Hugo the maniac possesses a kit that is very straightforward. He is made to be a melee fighter that kills fast and fights in short skirmishes.

His passive, Taste Of Blood, increases all movement speed by 8% when a melee weapon is drawn. This alone should be enough of a sign of his main playstyle. Pick up your melee and rush your enemies down. If this sounds incredibly dangerous to you, don’t worry. The rest of his kit is made to accommodate the level of risk a Hugo player takes.

Zealot is Hugo’s tactical. A one-time shield that absorbs a gunshot and allows Hugo to take no damage from that single shot. This ability’s effect lasts only 10 seconds, so it is advised to pop it before starting the fight so you can tank a wayward shot as you are rushing your enemy down and hopefully reach them with full HP.

Hugo’s ultimate, Maniac, allows him to reduce 1/4 of the incoming damage for 10 seconds. With both of his abilities lasting for 10 seconds, and his favored weapon being melee, Hugo is a character made for short HUNGER melee trades that end with blood very fast. The longer the fight goes on, Hugo loses his advantage even more.

Marie, the Best Girl

Marie the warrior nun is my favorite character. She is a healer, and her kit is catered towards playing with a team. Her passive is specifically of no use to her, but very useful for others on her team.

Her passive, called Gentle Touch, grants Marie the ability to revive others 50% faster. This means she can bring people back into the fight faster than other characters can, and she should be positioned in a way to go down last or survive the longest.

Vespers is her tactical that only affects her. Marie heals herself for 50 health over 25 seconds, giving her massive survivability. While she doesn’t possess any active advantage over other characters, if you don’t finish her off in one fight, she will outlast you in a battle of attrition. It is worth noting that Marie’s healing ability is canceled if she is damaged during the effect of the skill.

Marie’s ultimate, Mending Prayer, is a group-wide healing that heals all allies in a 50m radius for 100 HP for 25 seconds. Similar to her tactical, this effect will stop if you are damaged during the 25 seconds. With all of her kit combined, Marie is best played carefully, slowly, and preferably in the back. She doesn’t have the abilities to gain advantage in the fight itself, or react to other battle-oriented characters, but she is the lifeline of the party meant to help sustain the party longer

Otto, Marie but for Armor

If it wasn’t obvious from the title of this section, Otto bears incredible similarity to Marie in his skill description, especially in the tactical and ultimate section. So he’s also another backliner.

Maintenance is the ability that allows Otto to repair lost armor after battle. This ability repairs one armor slot every 60 seconds. But keep in mind that the timer is reset every time you take damage. So his passive only activates outside of battle.

His Tactical, Field Repairs, mends one bar of armour for all allies within 10m over 30 seconds. This is similar to Marie’s ultimate, and is also similarly cancelled by damage, meaning this is an out-of-combat ability to activate.

Otto’s ultimate, Masterwork, allows Otto to heal all of his armor in 10 seconds. This is similar to Marie’s tactical. So again, you can’t cast it in battle, or else it gets cancelled by damage. Otto is a pretty basic character, which becomes especially useful after you get your hands on some armor, so don’t level him up soon.

Serine is Situational.

Serine is the character that is unfortunately inferior to other characters in every aspect. She isn’t the best Assassin in the game; her abilities are not centered around direct DPS, and her passive is straight up useless unless there’s another Serine in front of you.

This useless passive is called Vodou Spirit, which makes her immune to poison damage. There are nearly no sources of poison damage in the game, except the handful of Serines you see in your lobbies from time to time.

Her tactical, the most useful part of her kit, is called Rush. It allows her to move 20% faster for 20 seconds. Excellent for fast rushing and surprising people, or simply repositioning and escaping a dicey situation. Mobility is the main power of Serine’s abilities, and you can see that in both of her active abilities.

Serine’s ultimate, Vodou Bomb, is an AOE poison bomb that drops on your current location and poisons anyone who stays in it. This ability also increases her speed by 20% for 10 seconds. You can use this ability and her speed to dictate battle positions in dungeons and tight spaces, forcing people out of their cover and favorable positions, or force melee fighters like Hugo to disengage and find breathing room to make your next choice.

Who is the Best Character in HUNGER?

There’s no definitive best character in HUNGER. While Hugo and Gabriel give you a definitive advantage in PvP, Eva allows you to survive longer and end fights faster, Marie sustains the team, and Otto reduces the costs; it all comes down to player preferences and playstyles. If you wanna play solo, Eva or Gabriel could be your first choices, but if you want to play with a team and they lack a good fighter, you’d go for Hugo. Marie and Otto are viable options when group sustainability comes up, and each fills their own role perfectly. Even Serine has her own niche, which she covers and performs well in.
