Kate Evans in Ace Combat 8 starts out as the cool-headed leader of Queen Flight, but she ends up becoming way more important to Rex and Joker Flight than her introduction lets on.
Does she survive Ace Combat 8? This and many other questions about her will be answered in this text. The game gives her a surprisingly big role alongside Rex after the war so she’s worth getting to know.
Spoiler Alert: This article contains major story and ending spoilers for Ace Combat 8.
All About Her:
Who Is Kate Evans in Ace Combat 8?
Katherine “Kate” Evans is a Lieutenant Commander in the Federation of Central Usea Navy. Her callsign is Little Bee and at the start of the story she commands Queen Flight, the other flight operating from the carrier Endurance alongside Joker Flight.
Bandai Namco describes Kate as calm and an excellent pilot in her own right. More importantly, she’s protective of more than just her own squadron. Her official profile specifically says she does everything she can to protect the pilots of both Queen Flight and Joker Flight.
The bandages she constantly wears are part of that characterization too. According to her official profile, they reflect the harsh fighting she has already been through. Kate hides the strain and her own fears, presenting a positive attitude to the people serving under her instead.
What Happens to Kate Evans?
Kate begins the Sotoa-Usea War as Queen 1, leading Queen Flight from the Endurance. Her situation changes dramatically as the war progresses and Queen Flight suffers devastating losses.
Eventually, Kate loses the other members of her squadron. With Queen Flight effectively gone, she becomes much more closely involved with Rex and the pilots of Joker Flight.
She temporarily takes Baxter’s position as Joker 2 while Baxter is occupied with the operation to disable a Tonitrus Spear. This is an important shift for Kate: she is no longer simply the commander of the Endurance’s second flight. She is now flying directly alongside the protagonist.
Does Kate Evans Die in Ace Combat 8?
No. Kate Evans does not die in Ace Combat 8. The game certainly wants you to think she might.
During Operation Paint It Blue, Kate is shot down. The people around her have no reason to believe she survived, so she is treated as another casualty of the war.
For the player, this works particularly well because Kate has already lost the pilots under her command. After spending so much of the story trying to keep everyone else alive, it suddenly looks as though the same war has finally caught up with her. But her story isn’t over.
How Does Kate Evans Survive?
Kate survives the crash and is eventually rescued by Savian mercenaries whose contracts with Sotoa have expired.
That rescue explains both why she survives and why she disappears for a while. Joker Flight cannot simply confirm that she ejected safely and pick her up. Kate ends up separated from the FCU forces until circumstances allow her to return.
Her comeback happens during Operation Locust Purge, when D.D.’s mercenary reinforcements enter the battle. Kate appears alongside them, revealing that she survived being shot down.
It is one of the better late-game payoffs for her character because the player has already been given enough time to accept that she may actually be gone.
Kate Evans Age in Ace Combat 8
Kate Evans’ exact age is never officially stated. Anyway, she already holds a senior flying and command role aboard the Endurance. If I had to estimate, around 30–35 years old seems reasonable: her rank, combat experience and responsibility for an entire flight suggest she is an established officer rather than a very young pilot. Still, that range is only an estimate.
What Happens to Kate and Rex After the War?
The game does not explicitly turn the final Kate and Rex scene into a romance, so it is safer not to treat it as confirmation of a relationship.
What it does establish is that Kate and Rex remain together professionally after the war.
Kate now commands King Flight, while Rex willingly serves as her backseater during the surveillance mission.
Kate Evans Voice Actors in Ace Combat 8
Kate Evans is voiced in English by Marcella Lentz-Pope.
The game’s cast listings credit Yūko Kaida for the Japanese performance.
Lentz-Pope’s performance fits the contrast built into Kate’s character: she needs to sound like a composed commanding officer even when the story makes it increasingly obvious how much pressure she is carrying.
Kate Evans’ Role Is Bigger Than It First Appears
Kate Evans initially looks like one of the supporting officers surrounding Joker Flight in Ace Combat 8. By the end, that description doesn’t really fit anymore.
She starts as Little Bee and Queen 1, trying to keep both flights alive. She loses Queen Flight, becomes part of Joker Flight, gets shot down, survives with the help of mercenaries and returns to finish the war. Then the epilogue gives her another command as King 1, with Rex himself flying behind her.
That also explains why players who finish the campaign are suddenly much more interested in her than her early-game screen time might suggest. Kate isn’t just the leader of “the other flight.” By the ending, she is one of the characters who actually makes it through the war with Rex and one of the people still beside him after the Wings of Theve story is effectively over.
