Ace Combat 8 Ending Explained: What the Final Scene Really Means

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve’s ending finally shows Enso Order was behind the war the whole time, but it doesn’t tidy everything up. Basically, Rex takes out the sub they sent after the Endurance and D.D. streams the evidence to millions of people. Enso itself just vanishes, though its assets end up with General Resource. For the last scene, it brings Jan Cope back one more time.

Yes, there’s quite a lot going on there. So let’s break down the ending.

Spoiler Alert: Heads up, major Ace Combat 8 ending spoilers ahead with a few Ace Combat 3 spoilers too.

Ace Combat 8 Ending Explained: What Happens in the Final Mission

By the time you hit the ending, you’re basically back where the whole thing began. Cope got sold to everyone as this legendary ace, but even Bandai Namco’s own character profile admits it was all made up. Once he’s gone, Rex just steps into the role and ends up becoming the real thing the legend was pretending to be.

By the final mission, Song of Wings, D.D. is trying to expose Enso as the one behind the war, but almost all the evidence linking it to the war has just vanished into thin air. The only stuff left is on his handheld, so Enso sends a submarine to take out both the device and the Endurance.

D.D. hops on the Wings of Theve account (the same public identity they built around that fake ace legend) and starts livestreaming what’s going on with Enso.

At first, only about 20,000 people are watching. Then Rex hits the sub Enso sent to wipe out the last evidence. D.D. tells everyone Enso’s behind the war and that he’s got the proof and the stream just blows up into the millions.

And here’s the funny part: Wings of Theve began as pure propaganda because Cope was never the legendary ace people thought he was. By the end, Rex has actually become a real hero and D.D. just uses that old fake legend to get millions of people looking at the truth about Enso.

Hortus Regis Alti and Moon 11’s Final Clue

You, as Rex, fight Moon 11 in Mission 29, Selene. Carmille Tewy, aka Moon 11, comes back saying Enso used her people, then tries to fire a Tonitrus Spear at Sotoa’s land battleship. Rex shoots her down and when she knows she’s going to meet her maker, she says “Hortus Regis Alti.” The Spear ends up hitting Enso’s research zone near Theve instead of the battleship.

Later, in the final mission, the crew figures anything tied to Enso might have a hidden back door. D.D.’s handheld might be able to use it, but it needs a passcode.

They try a bunch of things until they remember Moon 11’s last words. D.D. types in “Hortus Regis Alti” and somehow it works. The targeting system switches over to Enso’s submarine.

Moon 11’s final words turn out to be the passcode Rex and the others need. Her earlier Tonitrus Spear strike shows us that she may have already used that same hidden access to redirect the Tonitrus Spear.

What Happens to Enso Order after the War?

Unlike what we would’ve thought, in Ace Combat 8, Enso doesn’t get taken down in a clean “bad guys lose” way. Enso shuts itself down before anyone can really get to the people behind it. It deletes its data and nobody ever manages to identify who actually founded or owned it. So by the end, the organization disappears, but the people behind it are never truly exposed.

But the thing is, Enso’s assets don’t just go away. They end up with General Resource. By the epilogue, Enso’s assets have ended up with General Resource, which helps it grow into a major global power.

And this ties right back to that Mission 28 wiretap. The wiretap basically says Enso’s companies would get dissolved, but the top management would just grab the assets again under new names while the same people stayed in control.

So Enso might’ve disappeared on paper, but its money and influence could’ve just shifted into new hands or new names. Who knows.

What Does the Final Rex and Cope Scene Mean?

The final scene in Ace Combat 8 brings Rex back to where his story started. At the beginning of the game, he was sitting in Cope’s back seat. By the end, he’s in a back seat again, but Cope is gone and Rex is holding his dog tag.

That’s why Cope saying “back to square one” feels important. Rex has come full circle: he started out carrying Cope’s fake legend and ended up making the Wings of Theve real. Leaving Cope’s dog tag behind can also be read as Rex finally letting go of Cope and that borrowed identity.

What I’d interpret this scene as is that Cope’s presence is spiritual and the ending finally allows him to move on. I’ve seen some fans on social media who believe what Rex experiences could simply be in his head. There are two sides to this coin, which is why I wouldn’t call Cope a literal ghost or claim that the game confirms anything more specific.

What’s clear is the payoff. Cope starts the game admitting the Wings of Theve was a complete lie. By the end, Rex has actually turned into the hero that fake legend was selling.

Kate also survives the war and appears with Rex in the post-war sequence. We covered what happens to Kate, including her crash in Mission 25: The Battle of Rocky Island, Day 2 and rescue, in our Kate Evans in Ace Combat 8 guide.

Does Ace Combat 8 Have Multiple Endings?

No, there aren’t multiple endings. Kazutoki Kono already said before release that the Yes/No choices only mess with some of the radio chatter in the final mission. The actual ending stays the same no matter what you pick.

So what you get are Yes/No choices that may change individual lines, but as far as the ending is concerned, there’s one concrete individual ending and that’s about it. For example, one of those choices comes when Tasha Severskaya asks Ray whether it’s over, but your answer still doesn’t change the ending.

How Does the Ace Combat 8 Ending Connect to Ace Combat 3?

The biggest link to Ace Combat 3 is still General Resource. The epilogue hands them Enso’s leftover assets and we already saw them hanging around Project Triumphant earlier.

The official ACES Chronicle then picks it up from there: they start the Darkness of Enigma project in 2028, grab Rena Hirose in 2030, drop Data Swallow in 2032, and by 2040 they’re right in the middle of the corporate conflict.

At the end of the day, Ace Combat 8 doesn’t spell out every step between Enso and Ace Combat 3. But the ending puts General Resource directly in the spotlight and leaves the world moving toward the corporation-dominated future associated with Ace Combat 3.
