Graveyard Keeper 2 Prayer Guide: Every Prayer and How to Make a Bronze One

Prayers in Graveyard Keeper 2 are what you read at the church pulpit on Wrathday, once a week, and they’re your main source of Faith. You craft them at the Writing Desk in the basement under your house. The early recipes all need a Story and some Ink. On top of that, you add Clean Paper or a Blank Softcover Notebook, depending on the prayer. How many people show up is the lower of your Town Gratitude and your church quality, and every prayer needs a minimum crowd before the sermon can even start.

The catch is quality. A gold prayer needs a much bigger crowd than a bronze one, and once your Book writing mastery climbs, almost everything you write comes out gold. If that’s where you’re stuck, take off your mastery gear and write the prayer yourself until the red bars pass the gold star. Then put the gear back on and finish it. Zombies won’t save you here right now, because they keep writing perfect gold prayers too.

How Prayers and Sermons Work in Graveyard Keeper 2

Faith pays for Inspirations and fast travel in Graveyard Keeper 2, and a few quests ask for it too. Sermons are where most of it comes from, so the rules are worth knowing before you write a single new prayer:

RuleHow it works
WhenWrathday, once a week. Only your first sermon, during Agatha’s Holy Moly! quest, can happen on another day
WhereThe pulpit in your church. Bring the prayer with you
ParishionersThe lower of your Town Gratitude and your church quality
Success chanceParishioners divided by the prayer’s Guaranteed success number, up to 100%
If it failsYou still get the basic reward and only lose the success bonus
The prayerIt isn’t used up, so one prayer can last you the whole game
MoneyIt goes into the donation box. A better graveyard means more money from a successful sermon

Each sermon spends the Town Gratitude it uses, so you’ll be topping it up every week. Church quality stays put, which is why every bench and candle you add keeps paying off.

How to Make a Prayer

Almost every prayer after your first one comes from the Writing Desk. You craft it like anything else, except the result can land anywhere from bronze to gold, and that quality matters much more than it seems at first.

Where to Find the Writing Desk

The Writing Desk goes in the basement under your house. Look for the locked hatch inside your home, and have some Bronze Detail ready, because you need it to get through. Once you’re down there, build the desk yourself. You’ll be spending a lot of time with it.

Prayer Recipes

You start with the Basic Prayer, and new recipes unlock in the Theology tree. A lot of them are tied to quests, so don’t worry if a prayer you’ve heard about isn’t on your list yet. It’ll show up as you work through the story, and our Graveyard Keeper 2 guide can help you plan what to do next. Here’s where the early ones come from:

PrayerHow to get it
Basic PrayerAgatha gives it to you when you finish Holy Moly!
Faith Prayer1 Story + 3 Clean Paper + 1 Ink
Money Prayer1 Story + 3 Clean Paper + 1 Ink
Harvest Prayer1 Story + 1 Blank Softcover Notebook + 1 Ink
Prayer for Storms1 Story + 1 Blank Softcover Notebook + 1 Ink
Prayer for the Old GodThe Old God hands it to you during his questline

You can’t write a new copy of the Basic Prayer, so you’ll always have that one exactly as Agatha gave it.

Your Story’s quality doesn’t decide the prayer’s quality. A silver Story can give you a bronze prayer, and plenty of players have turned bronze Stories into gold prayers. What counts is your Book writing mastery and how the crafting bars go.

How to Make Clean Paper and Ink

All of these are made at the Writing Desk too:

  • Leather Scroll: made from Skin, which you take off corpses.
  • Clean Paper: 1 Leather Scroll makes 6.
  • Ink: 1 Ash + 1 Water + 1 Melted Fat makes 4. You get Ash by burning corpses, and Melted Fat comes from the Distillation Cube in the Alchemy Lab.
  • Blank Softcover Notebook: a Leather Scroll plus some Clean Paper, once you’ve researched Books I.

How to Get Stories

Stories are the thing you’ll always run short on. Every prayer you write needs one, and they come from a few different places:

  • Quests. Your very first Story is a quest reward, and plenty of quests hand out more later.
  • Write them yourself. The Writing Desk can make Stories, but each one costs Faith and some of your Insanity. If the desk won’t let you write, you’re simply too sane. Work yourself tired or spend some time with corpses, and it builds back up.
  • Looters. Sewer fights drop looter keys. Take them to Davy the Dagger at the Dockside Club on Lustday, and one of the rewards you can order is a bundle of Stories.
  • A former ship captain. Later in the story you meet an old captain who trades Stories for beer. After that, he’ll give you one for 10 Faith.

Every Graveyard Keeper 2 Prayer and Its Requirements

Each prayer has two numbers the game calls Need to start and Guaranteed success. Below the first one, you can’t hold the sermon at all. At the second, it can’t fail. Higher quality raises both, which is how a gold prayer ends up sitting in your chest unused. Each cell below reads Need to start / Guaranteed success.

Harvest Prayer15 / 4040 / 8080 / 120Your farms grow faster
Prayer for Storms20 / 40––Lets you resurrect zombies outside Stormy Green Day for 90 minutes. Only one version

Hypno Prayer60 / 120120 / 160160 / 220Removes the excessive zombies debuff
Prayer for the Old God180 / 180––Starts the Old God’s ritual. Only one version

Prayers with a buff only give it when the sermon succeeds, and the buff lasts longer at higher quality. If you’re somewhere between the two numbers, your chance is just parishioners divided by Guaranteed success. With 34 people on a silver Faith Prayer, for example, the game shows 85%.

Reports on the Prayer for Storms are mixed. Some players say it lets them raise zombie after zombie for the full 90 minutes, while others found each Resurrection table still works only once a day. Either way, it pays off most once you’ve built several tables, and you can have up to 4.

Why Your Prayer Keeps Coming Out Gold

This is the problem that catches a lot of players. Once your Book writing mastery climbs, the Writing Desk turns out gold prayers nearly every time, and there’s no option to ask for a lower quality. A gold Faith Prayer needs 50 people just to start. If your town can only send 20, that shiny new prayer is useless for now, and honestly, it feels unfair to get punished for being good at writing.

How to Make a Bronze or Silver Prayer

The trick is to make yourself worse at writing for a few minutes. Players on Steam and Reddit have used this to get silver and bronze prayers on purpose:

  1. Take any zombie off the Writing Desk, so you do the writing yourself.
  2. Unequip everything that adds Book writing mastery, like a Bronze Talisman or a Primer, and skip any food buffs. Your chance at the desk should drop a lot. One player got it down to 10%.
  3. Start the prayer and keep working until the red bars pass the gold star. If you want bronze, let a bit more red through.
  4. Put your gear back on and finish the prayer.

If your mastery is still too high with everything off, reloading a save and trying again is the only other option players have found. One player needed 5 tries to get a bronze Combo Prayer that way.

If you haven’t bought it yet, think twice about the writing perk that adds +4 at the desk. Players who took it early found it almost impossible to write anything below gold. On PC, some players reset it with the Perk Rebuild mod from Nexus and uninstalled the mod right after, since it causes lag.

Zombies Make Gold Prayers Too (Known Bug)

A zombie sounds like the obvious answer, since a fresh one has barely any mastery. Right now it doesn’t work. Players keep reporting zombies with nothing but a +1 Primer or amulet writing flawless gold prayers with zero red bars, even when the desk shows a 10% chance. Stories written by zombies come out gold the same way.

It’s still being reported on Steam as I write this. Until a patch fixes it, write your lower-quality prayers yourself.

Don’t Throw Away Your Old Prayer

When you write a better prayer, keep the old one in a chest. Sermons don’t use prayers up, and there will be weeks when the town can’t fill the church for the new one. One player deleted a bronze prayer right after writing a gold one, then found out there weren’t enough people to use the new one.

Which Prayer Should You Use?

The best prayer is usually the highest quality one you can hold with a good chance of success. Just remember that a failed sermon only pays the basic reward. Here’s how the Faith Prayer tooltips read for one player who had both faith perks:

Faith PrayerBasic reward per personSuccess bonus per personTotal on success
Bronze0.50.51.0
Silver0.60.61.2
Gold0.80.71.5

So a gold sermon that fails pays 0.8 Faith a head, and a bronze one that succeeds pays 1.0. The numbers hold up in real sermons, too. In one playthrough, 54 people on a silver Faith Prayer brought in 64 Faith.

My rule of thumb is simple. If the better prayer shows about 70% or more, go for it. Below that, the safe prayer pays more over a few weeks, and at 50% I’d take the sure thing every time. On weeks when the excessive zombies debuff is active, I’d rather use a buff prayer like Combat or Harvest, since the debuff cuts your Faith but not the buff.

How to Get More Faith From Every Sermon

Once you have a prayer you can actually use, more Faith comes down to a bigger crowd and fewer penalties.

Get More People Into the Church

Your crowd is capped by whichever is lower, Town Gratitude or church quality, so you’ll want to raise both. Church quality is the easy half. Benches and candles add to it, and they stay there for good.

Town Gratitude takes more work:

  • Town orders. These become your biggest source later on. Jack’s first iron order alone paid 20.
  • Thumbs-up items. Vendors show a thumbs-up next to items they’ll give you Town Gratitude for. Crops and burial certificates both count.
  • Town Gratitude scrolls. Quests and battles hand these out, and each one is worth 5. Save them for sermon day, and don’t open one when you’re a point or two below your cap, because anything over the cap is wasted.
  • The town itself. Your cap starts at 10 and grows as you take back the town and bring people in.

Pick Up the Prayer Perks

Three perks in the Book writing talent tree make every sermon better. Priest adds Faith per person, and Cardinal adds money. Performer raises the bonus you get when a sermon succeeds, so it works nicely with the other two. I’d take Priest first, since Faith is the thing you’ll always want more of.

Keep the Excessive Zombies Debuff Away

This debuff shows up when you have more zombies than your limit allows, and it cuts your sermon Faith roughly in half. You can clear it at the PR machine on the day after Wrathday, with charged hypno devices early on and newspapers later. The Good Fellow perk raises your zombie limit by 10, and a successful Hypno Prayer wipes the debuff too.

PR sometimes runs out earlier than it should, even on the morning of Wrathday. I’d hold your sermon early in the day, before the PR has a chance to run out.

Is a Gold Prayer Worth It?

Yes, eventually. A gold Faith Prayer pays at least 50% more per person than a bronze one, and once you can fill 70 seats, that difference really adds up every week. I just wouldn’t chase it early. Write a bronze or silver prayer that fits your town right now, and keep every prayer you make. Gold is your reward for rebuilding the town.

If the desk keeps handing you gold before you’re ready, don’t blame yourself. Take your gear off and let a few red bars through, then go hold the sermon you can actually win.
