Sacred Tear Locations

Elden Ring Church of the Plague Sacred Tear Location

The Church of the Plague Sacred Tear sits up on the cliffs past Sellia, Town of Sorcery, and it holds the only Sacred Tear in all of Caelid. But don’t let that scare you. You don’t need to beat a boss or talk to Gowry first. Grab Torrent, pick a route, and the Tear is yours in a couple of minutes. Then the real fun begins, which is exploring the secret area nearby. Learn where the church is and how to actually get there in this Elden Ring guide.

Where to Find the Church of the Plague Sacred Tear

The Church of the Plague is in eastern Caelid, up on the cliffs beyond Sellia, Town of Sorcery, and southwest of Fort Faroth. It’s easy to spot once you’re close. It’s a long, narrow church ruin with a Site of Grace right outside, also named Church of the Plague. You cannot miss it.

The Sacred Tear itself sits on the ground at the foot of the Statue of Marika, inside the church. Two Kindred of Rot guard the entrance, but nothing stands between you and the tear once you’re through the door. This is the only Sacred Tear in Caelid. So if you’re in the area or want a full Flask upgrade, don’t skip it.

How to Reach the Church of the Plague

There are two ways to reach the Church of the Plague, depending on whether you are coming from the North or the South. The first one is easier, and you get to solve a puzzle in the second one. Let’s find out which is your way:

Fastest Route: Fort Faroth Spiritspring

From the Fort Faroth Site of Grace, head southwest. You’ll reach a cliff edge with a Spirit Spring. Jump in, and it launches you down onto the plateau below. Ride up the hill from there, and the church is right in front of you. That’s it. Child’s play, right? This is probably the easiest route for most players, and it’s the one worth leading with if you’re coming from Dragonbarrow or already have Fort Faroth unlocked.

Sellia Brazier Puzzle Route

If you’re coming from the south, you’ll need to clear Sellia’s barriers first. Three braziers sit atop towers around town. Reach them by rooftop and tree-root platforming, and bring Torrent for the double jump. Lighting all three drops every barrier in Sellia, including the one blocking the Backstreets exit toward the church.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to talk to Gowry first. He gives you a hint about “the secret of Sellia,” but the braziers work whether or not you’ve met him. Although he seems lonely and some small talk will not kill you. That’s just my opinion.

Millicent at the Church of the Plague

Millicent is slumped against the wall inside the church, immobilized by Scarlet Rot. This is the first place you’ll run into her, and she kicks off one of the better questlines in the game if you’re into that. She’ll warn you off if you haven’t got the Unalloyed Gold Needle yet, but she doesn’t block your path to the statue.

You don’t have to touch her quest to grab the Sacred Tear. Walk past her, take the tear, walk out. If you do want to help her, you’ll need the needle from Commander O’Neil in the Swamp of Aeonia, but that’s a separate trip.

Sellia Hideaway: Secret Area Nearby

While you’re at the church, it’s worth checking out Sellia Hideaway. From the Church of the Plague Grace, head north toward the cliff face beneath Fort Faroth. You’ll find a large gravestone guarded by a sorcerer. Hit the wall behind it, and it turns out to be an illusion! That opens into Sellia Hideaway, a small dungeon packed with more illusory walls.

Here is another detour that is worth it: Near the end, you’ll find Lusat, the Glintstone Sorcerer, sealed behind an interactable rune. Getting him out isn’t required for anything else in this guide, but it’s a good reason not to just grab the Tear and leave.
