All 5 Gothic Remake Bestiary Books (Including Shrat Beasts of Khorinis)

Gothic Remake Bestiary Books is an amazing way to make a ton of Ore Nuggets early in the Gothic Remake. There are 5 Gothic Remake Beasts of Khorinis books that you can find and deliver to Cavalorn to learn how to hunt legendary animals for free. In this guide, we cover all of their exact locations (including the Shrat location that most players struggle to find). So keep reading and check out the pictures too.

Gothic Remake Bestiary Books Explained

Hunting skills usually cost 150 to 250 nuggets each. If you track down the five Bestiary books scattered across the colony, Cavalorn will teach you these trophy-harvesting skills, free of charge. You just have to bring the Cavalorn books to his hut in the valley west of the Old Camp. Some volumes require you to complete a quick favor or hand over a specific monster part before the skill unlocks.

If you complete all five quests, it saves you up to 1,250 Ore Nuggets in trainer fees and earns a total of 2,450 XP, which is enough to make a significant difference in your early character progression.

Pro-tip: Never sell your trophies to random hunters. They only pay 1 Ore Nugget per piece. Take your loot to Fisk at the Old Camp instead. He pays double.

Bestiary 1 Location: Beasts of Khorinis 1 (Scavengers)

Find this book inside Jan’s cabin. The cabin sits at the poolside village near the New Camp. Jan hangs out by the pier during the day. It’s best not to walk through the front door. He will turn aggressive and kill you in a single hit.

Climb the fence on the right side of the cabin. Crouch and step through the opening in the broken wall. You will spot the book on a table. Steal it and sneak back out. You can also skip the heist and purchase the book from Fisk at the Old Camp for 9 Ore Nuggets.

Cavalorn’s Correct Answers

Take the bestiary to Cavalorn. He will test your knowledge with three questions. You must answer them correctly to earn your reward. Answer wrong, and you get nothing

Cavalorn’s QuestionCorrect Answer
Scavengers have protective plates – but where exactly do they sit?Along the upper part of the spine.
The hollow chambers in their skull – what makes them special? They amplify their calls.
And lastly – why do they flock together? Think carefully. To defend their feeding grounds.

Nail the Cavalorn questions, and Cavalorn teaches you to extract Scavenger Skull plates for free. You also earn 50 XP.

Bestiary 2 Location: Beasts of Khorinis 2 (Minecrawlers)

There are two places you can find this book. The first one is easier, but you do the second one if you prefer to explore and challenge yourself.

Location 1: New Camp

This one is in Wolf’s hut. Head to the New Camp and find the upper huts on the left side of the main entrance. Two bandits will be chatting outside. Crouch and sneak in from the right side of the door so they do not attack you, or cast a Sleep Scroll on them, to play it safe. Grab the book off the wooden box behind the bed.

Location 2: Old Mine

Another place you may find this book is inside the Old Mine. Look for a side tunnel near Aleph, jump down the hole on the right, and loot the chest.

Here’s how to reach it: Go through the entrance and take the first right to go down the ladder. Then, take a left and a right, and go through the cave. Descend the next two ladders. Go left on the wooden path and then take another left to reach the next ladder. Climb to the top to reach the chest.

Unlocking the Extract Organ Skill

Give the Bloodfly book to Cavalorn. He will reward you with 500 XP and then ask you to bring him a Minecrawler Queen Pheromone Gland. You can grab this item during the Minecrawler’s Nest quest in Chapter 2.

Once you deliver the gland, you unlock the Extract Organ skill. This allows you to harvest Bloodfly poison sacs and Fire Lizard venom glands.

Warning: Think twice before you hand over the gland. You might need it later to craft powerful Permanent Potions for later chapters.

Bestiary 3 Location: Beasts of Khorinis 3 (Natural Armor)

This book sits deep in Orc territory. Exit the Old Camp via the south gate and head right into the Orc territory. Follow the trail south to the guard post. The guards will warn you not to step into their territory. You can kill them, run away inside until they leave you alone, or sneak inside. Your choice.

I usually run back to the gate. The guard post warders will kill them for me. Once past the gate, hug the left wall and head straight. Look left for a broken cart, then follow the rock wall into a small cave. The book is inside the second chest.

Lizard Scutes Location

Bring the book to Cavalorn. He will task you with gathering 3x Lizard Scutes. Fortunately, you do not have to travel far to find them. Head past Cohsel’s cabin near Cavalorn’s hut and check the logging station. You will find several Lizards hanging out near the small waterbody.

You can also find a lot of them near the beach. I found them specifically at the exact location below. Kill them, loot their scutes, and return to Cavalorn. He will reward you with 850 XP and teach you how to harvest Razor Plates.

Bestiary 4 Location: Beasts of Khorinis 4 (Shrat)

You can find this book in Shrat’s isolated hut near the western edge of the Swamp Camp map. Go to the southern border, find the Templar guard, and walk through the hollow tree trunk. Follow the wooden trail to Viran’s lookout, hug the right wall, and climb the terrain to avoid the water and Swampsharks. You should now reach Shrat. The book is on the table inside his hut.

How to Kill Swampsharks

Give the book to Cavalorn. He will teach you how to skin Swampsharks and ask you to bring back an intact hide and plate. Swampsharks are super difficult, so wait until Chapter 2 and equip a two-handed weapon with at least +60 strength.

You have two easy ways to handle this hunt:

  • The Log Trap: Kite a Swampshark to the hollow log area. It cannot progress past that point, leaving it open to attacks.
  • The Guard Lure: Shoot a Swampshark near the camp entrance with your bow. Lure it back to the Templar guards. They will all attack the beast for you.
  • Ball Lightning scrolls: This is probably the easiest method. A Swampshark will be killed with two Ball Lightning scrolls, and each costs 5 mana. Thank me later.

Skin the monster and return to Cavalorn. He will hand over 250 Ore Nuggets and 1000 XP.

Bestiary 5 Location: Beasts of Khorinis 5 (Shadowbeasts)

You will find the final volume inside Xardas’s tower. This is a late-game area. The demon at the entrance blocks your path. You must bring him the hearts of a fire, ice, and stone golem to get inside. Once you clear that out, head to the top floor. The book sits on the round table right behind Xardas.

Hunting Shadowbeasts

Give the fifth book to Cavalorn. He tasks you with a difficult late-game mission. You need to hunt down the legendary Shadowbeasts and bring back their pelt. These are scattered all over the map, but I found one in a forest. Read our Shadowbeast guide to learn more about how to find and kill Shadowbeasts.

In addition, you can find some extra Shadowbeast skin inside a treasure room, which is very close to Cavalorn, too. If you go a bit north of his place, you should be able to pick it up.

That’s all you need to know about Gothic Remake Bestiary Books. If you’ve done everything right, you probably completed all of the Beasts of Khorinis quests. Good luck hunting.

FAQ

How many volumes of the Bestiary are there?

There are five volumes in total, each for a specific type of monster: Scavengers, Minecrawlers, Lizards/Razors, Swampsharks, and Shadowbeasts.

Who do I sell my monster trophies to for the best price?

Sell your early trophies to Fisk at the Old Camp. He pays double the price (2x Ore Nuggets) compared to regular hunters, who only offer 1x Ore Nugget.

Do I need items other than the hunting books to unlock the skills?

Yes. Volume 2 requires you to bring Cavalorn the Minecrawler Queen’s Pheromone Gland. Volume 3 requires 3x Lizard Scutes, and Volume 4 requires a Swampshark hide and plate.

Can I learn these hunting skills without the beast books?

You can learn them from standard hunters like Drax, but they will cost you anywhere from 150 to 250 Ore Nuggets each. Finding the Bestiary books allows Cavalorn to teach them to you completely for free.

What should I do if the quest for Volume 2 bugs out?

Some players report that the quest won’t progress after handing in Volume 2. This happens if you haven’t looted or brought the Minecrawler Queen’s gland yet. Getting the gland usually fixes the progression.

Is the Minecrawler Queen Pheromone Gland missable?

Yes. Once the Old Mine collapses in Chapter 2, you can no longer access the Minecrawler Queen. Get the gland before the mine closes.

What order should I collect the Bestiary books?

Volume 1 first (easiest, great early income from Scavenger Skulls). Then Volume 3 (Orc territory is accessible early with care). Volume 2 next during Chapter 2 mine quests. Volume 4 in Chapter 2–3 after leveling up. Volume 5 is story-tied to late Chapter 3.
