Servant of the Lake Harvey Guide | Is the Servant Harvey

Rusty Lake Harvey has been a talking parrot since 2015, and nobody knew why. Servant of the Lake finally answers it, and the short version is that Harvey used to be human! But the game does not tie up every loose end. It solves one Harvey mystery and quietly opens another one that the fans are still arguing about. Here is who he is and what actually happens to him.
Spoiler Alert: This article spoils the ending of Servant of the Lake. Proceed with caution!
What You’ll Read:
Who Is Harvey in Rusty Lake
Harvey is a parrot. Rusty Lake’s own Seasons page calls him the player’s parrot, and that first memory is set in Spring 1964, when Laura Vanderboom keeps him caged by the window. Feed him there, and he lays a black egg.
He is also playable in four games: Rusty Lake Hotel, Cube Escape: Harvey’s Box, Underground Blossom, and now Servant of the Lake. Laura’s mother, Rose, asks him to watch over her daughter. Mr. Owl gives him orders and sends him letters. For a pet bird, he has a suspiciously full career, and honestly, that was the tell-all along.

Is the Servant in Servant of the Lake Harvey
Yes. You play as Harvey for the entire game, and you have no idea until the last few minutes. Plot twist!
Set in Spring 1839, decades before Roots, the game has you hired as a servant at the Vanderboom house. Kate the maid is your boss and walks you through your duties. Over three days, you work for Aldous, his brother William, and their sister Alexandra, who shows up with her infant son James. All three want the book with the recipe for the Elixir of Life and Death.
Since you serve everyone, you end up working on every side at once. You collect timepieces for William, brew the elixir with Aldous, and cut the chandelier rope that opens Alexandra’s route to the cave. The servant with no name and no face turns out to be the bird fans have wondered about for eleven years!
What Happens to Harvey in Servant of the Lake
The brothers fight, and Alexandra is revealed to have stolen the unfinished elixir from Aldous. She drinks it, then tries to force James to drink it too. Kate ends that by throwing a plank at her head. You are told to get the child away from his mother.

Alexandra turns into a Corrupted Soul. The structure above gives way and buries you and James in rubble. With Harvey dying, Kate gives him the elixir. He survives, and it transforms him. You follow the light out, hand James to the coachman, get in the carriage, and the credits roll.

Two things people get wrong here. The elixir is Kate’s doing, not Aldous’s. They assume it’s his probably because you genuinely did give Aldous elixir earlier that same day. And what Harvey drinks is an unperfected version. The finished elixir does not exist until 1859.
Why Is There Another Parrot in the House
Here is the crazy part of this story. On Day 3, during Assisting in Alchemy, there is a hidden achievement called Animal Testing. You pour some of the finished elixir into a caged parrot’s food bowl and let it drink. Feed it, and you can talk to it once afterwards.
So there is an ordinary parrot sitting in a cage in the Vanderboom house while Harvey is still walking around as a human. You test the elixir on a bird hours before the elixir turns you into one, and the game never says a word about who that bird is.
I love this, and it drives me insane in equal measure. It is the best foreshadowing in the game and an unresolved continuity hole at the same time. Anyone telling you Servant of the Lake explains every Harvey mystery has not thought about the parrot in the cage.

Rusty Lake Harvey Timeline
Every dated point where Harvey shows up, in order. Paradise is not on this list on purpose, and I explain why in the next section.
| Year | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 1839 | Harvey works as the Vanderboom servant, drinks the unperfected elixir, and escapes with baby James. Servant of the Lake. |
| 1889 | Rusty Lake Cigars is founded (the date written on the box in Harvey’s Box). |
| 1891 | Emma ties a letter around his neck for her missing son Frank. |
| 1893 | Butler at Rusty Lake Hotel under Mr. Owl, ordered to kill a guest a night. |
| 1894 | The Corrupted Souls attack him. He escapes in parrot form. |
| 1930 | He finally delivers Emma’s letter, 39 years late. |
| 1939 | A birthday postcard from Harvey falls out of Dale’s father’s jacket. |
| 1964–1981 | Laura keeps him caged in Cube Escape: Seasons. |
| 1969 | Shipped to Rusty Lake in a cardboard box. Harvey’s Box. |
| 1972 | Laura’s escaped Soul takes him hostage at the mill. |
That 39-year delay on one letter is the funniest thing in this series. Like, are you USPS or something?
Harvey Theories (Not Canon)
There are two main conspiracy theories about this problematic parrot. Are these as crazy as you thought?
The Paradise problem
Rusty Lake Paradise is set before 1839, and a Harvey-like bird appears in it as an easter egg. If Harvey only becomes a bird in 1839, that bird should not be there. Fans have three answers to this: it is just a visual reference and not Harvey; Harvey is tangled in non-linear time travel; or it is a previous incarnation.
None is confirmed, and Rusty Lake has never commented. What do you think?
Parrot form or parrot-man?
The elixir turns humans into animal-people. That is exactly what happens to Aldous, who becomes Mr. Crow. So the 1839 change most likely gives Harvey a parrot-headed humanoid form, not the small caged bird, which fits him working as a butler in 1893 and appearing in anthro form in 1894. He probably drops to plain bird form, escaping the Souls. Coherent, but not stated anywhere.
That’s everything about Rusty Lake Harvey. If you’re still stuck on Day 1, you will have the most trouble solving the flower puzzle. But if you’re past that and still have questions, write to me in the comments.
FAQ
Is Harvey male or female?
The developers confirmed his pronouns in the Newgrounds description for Harvey’s Box, and he presents as male. But he lays eggs as a parrot, so the transformation may have changed his sex. The developers have left it open.
What kind of parrot is Harvey?
An African Grey. The live parrot cast as Harvey in the Paradox short film is an African Grey too. An older fan theory guessed Alexandrine parrot, which is outdated now.
How old is Harvey?
An adult servant in 1839 who is still around in 1981 is past 140.
Do I need to play the other games first?
No. The series avoids exposition dumps, and reviewers found it accessible to newcomers. You will get more out of the ending if you have played Rusty Lake Hotel, though.
