WARDOGS recoil control can be pretty brutal, but there’s a catch: the spray patterns are predictable and linear. I’m aware that seasoned FPS players, it might be a piece of cake. For many of you, however, it can be quite frustrating. I know for a fact you’ve tried equipping the best vertical grips and muzzles, but still you struggle. I did some experimenting and gathered info I didn’t find anywhere else. Bulkhead’s WARDOGS has certain hidden mechanics regarding recoil. None of these mechanics are mentioned anywhere. Not in the stats, not in official notes, nada.
What you may not know: using a lower-capacity magazine reduces recoil, while crouching gives ARs, SMGs, and DMRs a 15% decrease in recoil, and in prone it’s 30%. Holding your breath (called “Focusing” in game) also reduces recoil by 15% for SMGs, 20% for ARs, 30% for DMRs, and a whopping 50% for LMGs. Combining these mechanics (especially for LMGs) can dramatically reduce recoil.
(All recoil tests were performed on the September 27, 2026 live build using the T-21 and M249, with 20-, 30-, 60-round mags, and no attachments. Later updates may change the mechanics.)

WARDOGS Secret Magazine Recoil Mechanic
I tested the recoil on a T-21. This is what its bullet spray looks like without attachments on a 60-round mag.
Obviously, it’s extremely hectic and goes quite far up. Now see what it looks like with a 30-round mag.
Better, but we can go even further. I loved how the change was easily apparent with the 20-round mag.
20 rounder mag visibly reduces recoil the best compared to other mags for T-21. This is true for all magazine-fed guns in the game. If you use the lowest-capacity magazine, you’ll have the lowest recoil.
(Hint: not all weapons have smaller magazines as an option, so try the other methods mentioned further down if that’s the case.)
Crouching and Going Prone
Another way I like to reduce recoil that is not explicitly mentioned is crouching or going prone. Now, this might be more obvious to some of you since it’s a common mechanic in shooter games. But in case you’re not a veteran, I ask you to pay close attention to your crosshair when you crouch or go prone: you’ll notice your aim will sway less. On top of this, crouching gives ARs, SMGs, and DMRs a 15% decrease in recoil, while going prone reduces it by 30%.
For example, when I equipped an extended mag and crouched, I got a recoil similar to that of a 30-round mag. But we’re talking about T-21 here. Some other guns like AK and Galil have different types of magazines. But this secret mechanic exists for all guns nevertheless.
WARDOGS Secret Effect Behind Holding Your Breath
There is another mechanic that many players overlooked, yours truly included: holding your breath.
A lot of us were led to believe holding your breath was to increase FOV, steady your aim, and reduce sway. The game itself calls holding your breath “Focusing.” You aim, hold the Shift button, then you have a short window to shoot with more accuracy. While holding your breath:

But here’s the thing. Here’s the life-saving tip. This mechanic only comes in handy when aiming for a single target. While Focusing, only the first handful of bullets enjoy the reduced recoil. After that, the bullets run wild. Seriously; your shots will have bigger distance in between and they’ll either go left or right.
So you might be asking what should I do with such a limited option? Aim, lean and peek, hold your breath, shoot for the head. Fair warning though; you’ve got to have decent aim to risk such maneuvering.
Optimizing the M249 SAW Recoil Control
The M249 SAW is even crazier with the recoil. I tried testing it out without any attachments. Take a look at the result.
As I mentioned earlier, LMGs receive a whopping 50% reduced recoil bonus from holding your breath. Now take a look at the new spray I did while Focusing. The difference is staggering.
Check the difference in accuracy between crouch mode and crouch mode while focusing.

That’s not the end of it. I went prone and held my breath. Now look at this beauty.
It’s so good that it’s like equipping a bipod. So imagine how insane your aim would be while putting on attachments and doing this method. You can also try the smaller magazine method on LMGs by putting on 20 rounders. However, the whole point of the LMG is the large ammo pool, so only go this route if you’re confident you can get those headshots in less than 20 shots.
What These Secret Recoil Mechanics Mean for Your Loadout
Yes, use your best available recoil-reducing attachments. When you’re choosing grips for your guns, go for those that decrease vertical recoil. There is minor horizontal recoil for most guns in WARDOGS, so only choose an angled grip if you’re picking a gun like the MP5.
Choose your preferred magazine size based on your playstyle: smaller for more accuracy during short bursts, or larger for longer bursts with less recoil control. Personally, I prefer a middle ground. And if all else fails, wear the Ghillie suit and pretend the enemy can’t see you.
After that, etch this in your memory: crouch, hold breath, shoot.
