Iron Road Boat: Fulmar Location, Supplies and Return

The boat in The Long Dark: Iron Road is the Fulmar. It is docked at Hibernia Processing in Desolation Point, and it takes you to Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. The trip needs 5000 calories of food, 20 kg of fuel, 20 L of potable water and 5 tinder plugs. Put all four into the Boat’s Supplies locker, not the Search trunk. Then light the boiler and use the throttle.
Iron Road launched in Early Access on October 27, 2026, and it is on Steam only. Everything below is the launch version, and early access numbers can change.
What You Will Read:
Where to Find the Fulmar Boat
Walk to the Hibernia Processing docks in Desolation Point. The Fulmar is tied up outside the main building, so you don’t need to search any rooms for it. Expect a short climb to get aboard.
Your current Survival save works. Cauldron Island is not on the starting region list, so you cannot begin a new game there, and the Fulmar is the only way over.
Two other boats get mixed up with it:
- The Riken: a wrecked whaling ship near Hibernia Processing. It has a forge, but it goes nowhere.
- Beached boats on Coastal Highway: these come from Beachcombing, and they can vanish after a few days. They have nothing to do with the Fulmar.
Once you are aboard, play the wax cylinder marked “Play Me”. Alice explains the setup there. The boat runs on automatic navigation along a set route, so you never steer.

Fulmar Boat Supply Requirements
The Fulmar wants four things before it leaves.
| Supply | Amount | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| Food | 5,000 Calories | Food accepted by the Boat’s Supplies menu. |
| Fuel | 20 kg | Wood, coal, sticks and branches. Reclaimed Wood works. |
| Water | 20 L | Boiled, drinkable water |
| Tinder | 5 Tinder Plugs | Make the plugs from sticks. |
You can fill these over several visits. Drop off what you have and read the counters. Then come back with the rest. I think the fuel is the slow part for most people.

Food
The counter measures calories rather than food weight. Raw meat and animal fat can count toward the total. Use food you can spare and check the counter after each deposit.
Do not rely on ruined provisions to finish the requirement. If an item is unavailable in Boat’s supplies or does not add calories, choose another accepted food.
Keep some food separate for exploring after arrival. The provisions used for the crossing are consumed during the trip.
Fuel
Hibernia Processing has crates and pallets near the docks, and they break down into Reclaimed Wood. A stack of 12 weighs 3.00 kg. That is 0.25 kg a piece, so 20 kg of Reclaimed Wood alone would take about 80 pieces. Mix in coal and sticks to cut the chore down. The Riken has some coal.
Keep a bit of extra fuel for your own fires. You will need them to boil water and to start the boiler.
Water
Boil your 20 L of drinkable water before you deposit it. A Cooking Pot saves a lot of time. Water weighs 1 kg per liter, so carry it over in batches.
Here is a trick: break down nearby wooden objects while the next batch of water boils.
Keep some water for yourself too. The boat does not give any back after the crossing.
Tinder Plugs
Make five Tinder Plugs from sticks. It is easy to forget them while you chase the big counters, but the boat will not leave without all five.
Boat’s Supplies vs. Search Trunk
The Fulmar has two separate storage compartments. Boat’s Supplies holds the provisions required for the crossing. Search Trunk is for your personal gear. Items stored in Search Trunk do not fill the boat’s supply counters.
| Option | What it is | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Boat’s Supplies | The payment locker for the trip | The four supplies, with counters that show what is missing |
| Search trunk | Your own 150 kg storage | Gear and extra supplies you want on Cauldron Island |

If the boat still asks for provisions, check where you put them. Items in Search trunk do not fill the voyage counters. Move the required supplies into your inventory and deposit them through Boat’s supplies.
Gear in the Search trunk is still there when you land. Food you put into Boat’s supplies can come back out before you leave, so you can change your mind.
How to Leave Desolation Point on the Fulmar
- Fill all four counters in Boat’s supplies.
- Light the boat’s boiler.
- Use the throttle.
- Confirm that you want to travel to Cauldron Island.

Check your own pack before you confirm. Keep food and drinking water for the first day, plus a way to start a fire. The island is harsh, and I would not leave gear behind on the dock hoping to fetch it later.
The Fulmar drops you at Port Remnant. Walk into the nearby lighthouse. Alice’s next recording and a hand-drawn map are upstairs, and the recording sends you to the church first.
Can You Return to Great Bear Island?
Yes. The Fulmar stays at Port Remnant, and it takes you back to Desolation Point on Great Bear Island.
The return costs the same as the trip out: 5000 calories, 20 kg of fuel, 20 L of potable water and 5 Tinder Plugs. Players have confirmed this on Stalker and Voyageur. Check the counters before you set off.
The trip out uses up its supplies, so you have to refill the boat and relight the boiler when you want to leave. I would collect the return cost early, before you wander deep into the island.

Why Is the Fulmar Missing or Not Moving?
The Fulmar is missing
Iron Road is on Steam only, so console players will not find it. If you own it on Steam but cannot see the boat, follow the official installation instructions:
- Right-click The Long Dark in your Steam library and select Properties.
- Open DLC and make sure The Long Dark: Iron Road is checked.
- Let Steam finish any pending game updates before you launch.
- Load your Survival save and check the Hibernia Processing docks in Desolation Point.
A new game is not needed, and Cauldron Island will not show up as a starting region.
The Fulmar will not leave
- Open Boat’s supplies. Items in the Search trunk or your backpack do not count toward the trip.
- Read all four counters, including the five Tinder Plugs.
- If food does not raise the Calories counter, swap it for another item.
- Light the boiler, then use the throttle and confirm the travel prompt.
Full counters will not light the boiler, and a lit boiler will not fill the counters. The boat needs both.
