REKA Baba Yaga Guide: First Quests and Chicken House

Baba Yaga, also spelled Baba Jaga, is the old witch who takes Reka in as her apprentice. Her first quests send you after mushrooms and honeycombs, then after a stolen talisman, and they end with a ritual that gives you a walking chicken-legged house. Here’s every step, from her hut to the fog.

Where to Find Baba Yaga

Your path starts when Bogdan, a traveling merchant, loses a wheel. It rolled down the road toward the bridge, so find it and bring it back. Bogdan then points you toward Kopnik, a small village farther down the road.

Ask the villagers in Kopnik about the old woman, then follow the hut marker on your compass to Baba Yaga’s Hut. Talk to her to start the first quest.

Collect the Ingredients and Retrieve Her Talisman

Baba Yaga asks for ingredients to make a soup. Grab the recipe book from the bench in her garden and press Tab to open your journal. The main quest is 10 mushrooms and six honeycombs. The soup turns out to be a slip of the tongue, because she needs them for the ritual.

She lends you her crows for the job. Pick them from the Ctrl radial menu and hold left click to collect nearby items. Some honeycombs sit in trees, so aim the crows at them. Grab plenty of berries too. The Lutki like them, and the cooking tutorial later uses three.

Before you head back, Baba Yaga says the Lutki stole her magical talisman again. Follow the Home of the Lutki marker deeper into the forest. Use your crows to clear the planks trapping a Lutki, then collect the Mortar and Pestle Talisman. You can also give berries to the Lutki for small gifts.

To use the talisman, select it from the Ctrl radial menu, close the menu, then hold left click until the teleport begins. The menu choice alone won’t send you anywhere.

How to Complete the Trial of the Chicken

Back at her hut, Baba Yaga wants two more things. One is a pine branch from the giant crooked pine on the small island in front of her hut. The other is a chicken, and any chicken will do. Bring both to her. She then leads you to the ritual site, where a pile of huge bones surrounds a big white oven. This whole sequence is the Trial of the Chicken.

1- Place the chicken: Put it in the nest under the big white oven.

2- Cleanse the site: Open the Ctrl radial menu, switch to Items, and equip the pine branch. Hold left click at the candle to light it, then use the smoking branch at the marked cleansing spots. Follow Baba Yaga as she moves to the next section.

3- Get the egg and grain: Go into her hut and take the big egg from the ancestors’ shrine by the front door. It isn’t a normal chicken egg, so don’t look for one around the site. Pick up grain from her garden on the way, then put the egg in the big white oven.

4- Fill the bowls: Place honeycomb in the bowl at the back of the ruins, so keep one in your bag. Walk clockwise around the house to the next bowl and place grain there when she tells you to. You only fill two bowls, even though more sit around the site.

5- Dissolve the bones: Baba Yaga hands you a charm blessed by the god of fire. Use it to dissolve every bone around the site, then give the charm back. Some are huge, so walk the whole site before you return.

6- Carry the embers: Return to the oven inside Baba Yaga’s original hut and collect the embers. Carry them back to her to continue the ritual.

After that, she takes a drop of your blood and finishes the ritual alone in a cutscene. When it ends, you have a house with chicken legs.

Build and Move Your Chicken-Legged House

After the cutscene, tell the house to sit down when Baba Yaga asks. She then gives you wood and offers a building tutorial. Complete it, then place Baba Yaga’s chair and your Skeleton Chair. The Skeleton Chair lets you control the house, and placing it finishes the Trial of the Chicken.

To move the house, interact with the Skeleton Chair and tell it to get up, then choose “Hut, hut, go where I say.” Steer toward the deepest fog, and enter it at any point along the edge of the map. The house can’t sit down everywhere, so walk it to an open spot if it refuses.

What to Do Before Leaving the First Area

Baba Yaga warns that you may never come back once you enter the fog. Finish any village quests you want to complete, including The Missing Friend and the lost-goat task, before leaving. Send the crows around for extra wood too, since the oven needs it.

You also need food to travel. If you try to leave without any, the game tells you to cook some in your oven. Fuel the oven with wood, then follow the cooking tutorial using three berries. Once the food is ready, collect it from the oven. At the map edge, select your provisions in the travel menu before confirming the journey.
