How to Parry in Phantom Blade Zero: Controls, Timing, Tips

Learning the parry in Phantom Blade Zero is the key to turning defense into offense. Tap L1 (or right-click) on blue flashes for free, resource-friendly deflects that can trigger Ghoststep and drain enemy Sha-Chi, dodge red ones instead, stay aggressive mid-combo and never just hold block unless you’re in real trouble.

The Basic Input of Parry

How to parry? On PlayStation: L1, Right-click on mouse. That’s it. Hold the button for regular block (costs Sha-Chi).

The difference between holding and tapping is huge. Holding is your OH CRAP emergency button. Tapping at the right moment is how you actually win fights.

Blue Flash vs Red Flash are the most Important rule here. Enemies basically light up to tell you what to do:

  • Blue flash (Brutal Move): You can (and should) parry this.
  • Red flash (Killer Move): You cannot parry or block this. You have to perfect-dodge it instead.

If you try to parry a red attack, you’re just gonna eat it. Don’t be that guy.

What a Good Parry Actually Does

When you time the parry correctly, you take zero damage and it costs you almost no Sha-Chi. It drains a chunk of the enemy’s Sha-Chi bar and If the timing is really on point, you trigger Ghoststep.

Ghoststep is the fun part. Soul instantly teleports behind the enemy and gives you a free window to go crazy. It’s the game’s way of saying nice timing, here’s a reward.

Perfect dodging a red attack does the exact same Ghoststep thing. So both perfect defense options pay you the same way.

Sha-Chi & Why Parrying Is Better Than Blocking

Sha-Chi is your stamina plus posture and everything bar rolled into one. It’s the yellow bar under your health. Holding block drains it constantly and getting hit while blocking drains it even more. Hitting zero and you get guard-broken and the enemy gets a free buffet on you.

A proper timed parry? Barely costs anything (or nothing at all) and actually gives you Sha-Chi back on a perfect one. It also chunks the enemy’s Sha-Chi, pushing them closer to getting guard-broken themselves.

Moral of the story? Parry when you can. Block only when you have to.

You Can Parry Mid-Combo

Most games make you finish your attack string before you can defend. Phantom Blade Zero laughs at that idea.

Attacks have very low commitment. You can be halfway through a light or heavy string, see a blue flash coming in, tap L1, parry it, and often just keep swinging like nothing happened. Same goes for dodging.

This is the secret sauce. The game wants you attacking and defending at the same time. Once this clicks, the whole combat system feels completely different and a bit more fun.

How to Get Better in Parrying

Practice on the first groups of regular enemies. Die a few times on purpose if you have to. Muscle memory is everything.

Watch the enemy’s weapon or wrist, not just the big flash. The flash is the warning; the actual impact is what you’re timing for. Weapon swapping fully restores your Sha-Chi (with a short cooldown after the second swap). Use this when you’re low and need to reset.

If you see a dark attack from a boss that looks nasty, just dodge it. Those can delete your entire Sha-Chi bar even if you try to parry.

And finally, don’t spam heavy attacks forever. Enemies adapt and will start punishing predictable patterns.

At the end, take a fast look at this decision tree:
