OSRS Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil Guide: Best Gear, Kill Strategies, and More!

The Thermonuclear Smoke Devil is the boss variant of the standard Smoke Devil. Most players just call it Thermy. Cute, right? Not really! It is a very fast fight. However, its rapid attacks can easily overwhelm you if you go in blind. This OSRS Echo Thermy guide covers the exact gear and strategies you need to kill Thermy efficiently.
What You’ll Read:
Echo Smoke Devil Requirements and Location
You need level 93 Slayer to damage the Thermonuclear Smoke Devil. Stat boosts cannot help you bypass this level check either. You can’t just walk up to him and say hi either. You must be on an active Smoke Devil Slayer task, unless only once for the Western Provinces Diary.
How to Get There
The boss sits inside the Smoke Devil Dungeon. You will find this cave south of Castle Wars in the region of Kandarin. There are two fast ways to reach the entrance.
1. Use a Ring of Dueling. Teleport to Castle Wars and run south-west.
2. Use Fairy Ring code BKP. This drops you right outside the dungeon.

Best Gear Setups to Kill Thermonuclear Smoke Devil
Thermy hits hard and fast with random damage types. So it’s best to focus on raw DPS. You need to kill it before you run out of supplies. It’s best to go in with either melee or magic gear below:
Melee Gear
The Scythe of Vitur is your best-in-slot weapon. This boss has a huge 4×4 size. But that means the Scythe will hit for maximum damage. If you don’t own a Scythe, grab Osmumten’s Fang. It provides incredibly consistent hits. On a tight budget? An Arclight or Emberlight works fine. It will just take longer to kill him.
Always wear your Slayer Helmet (i) for the 15% damage and accuracy boost. Pair it with Torva or Bandos armor to maximize your melee strength. Bring Dragon Claws or a Voidwaker for your special attack weapon. It’s best to do a huge burst of damage right at the start.

Magic Gear
Thermy has very low Magic defense. This can be your advantage. So the Shadow of Tumeken is an absolute powerhouse. If you don’t have a Shadow, a powered staff like the Trident of the Swamp or Trident of the Seas is your next best bet.
For armor, Ancestral is the top pick. Need a cheaper option? Virtus armor is highly effective and saves you a ton of GP. You will also need runes for Ice Barrage or Ice Blitz if you plan to use the freeze method. Keep reading to learn about the freeze method.

How to Kill the Thermonuclear Smoke Devil
Thermy attacks every two ticks with incredibly high accuracy. If you go headfirst and absorb his hits, your food will drain fast. But if you utilize mechanics, you can reduce the damage you take. You have these four main strategies to choose from:
The POH Spec Method
Equip your Dragon Claws or Voidwaker. Dump all your special attacks on Thermy right when he spawns. Once you run out of energy, teleport to your Player-Owned House. Drink from your ornate rejuvenation pool to restore your stats. Lastly, use your Ring of Dueling or fairy ring to run straight back to the cave. ingenious, right? The only problem is it will take some time to kill him.

The Step Under Method
This is the standard approach if you are using a powered staff or a regular melee weapon. Attack the boss and immediately click the tile underneath it. Thermy attacks every two ticks, but your weapon is much slower. Walking under the boss forces it to reset its attack cycle. This easy movement cuts the damage you take in half.

The Freezing Method
You can freeze the boss in place with Ice Barrage or Ice Blitz. Once it stops moving, step back out of its melee range. You can then safely attack it with Magic, Ranged, or a long-reaching Halberd. You will take zero damage as long as the freeze holds.

The Red-Click Method
This is a more advanced kiting technique. Drop an item on the floor or use the room exit. Click the object, then click the boss in a specific tick rhythm. This drags Thermy around the room while keeping you perfectly out of its attack range. You deal constant damage without ever getting hit. Thank me later.
Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil Leagues 6 Explained
Leagues 6 introduces the Echo Boss variant of Thermy. This version features completely different mechanics. The bad news is that you cannot use the standard step-under or freezing methods. I’ll tell the good news soon. The fight revolves entirely around precise movement and overhead prayers.
Echo Mechanics and Fighting Pattern Walkthrough
When you enter the cave, 12 protective plates spawn on the floor. Stand on the first plate in a group of three. Start the fight with Protect from Missiles active.
Above 50% health, the boss attacks in sets of three. It shoots three ranged attacks (red rocks) followed by three magic projectiles. Move to the next protective plate right after a hit. You take zero damage if you stand on a plate with the correct prayer active. You take half damage if you use the wrong prayer or step off the plate.
The boss fires a huge special attack every 12 regular attacks. Choose a long-range tile before the fight starts and run to it to maximize your distance and minimize the damage. You will still take a minimum of 10 damage from this hit.
The fight speeds up once the boss drops below 50% health. It alternates attack styles on every single hit. Watch its first attack after the halfway mark carefully. That hit locks in the rotation for the rest of the kill. The boss also charges its special attack much faster at low health. Stay on your toes and be ready to run.
Notable Thermonuclear Drops and Profit
The good news is Thermy drops some highly valuable items. It is the only monster in the game that drops the Smoke battlestaff. You have a 1 in 512 chance to see one! The real money-making comes from the Occult necklace. This magic amulet drops at a 1 in 350 rate!
You also have a chance to hit the jackpot with a Dragon chainbody. The Echo Thermy drop rate for this nostalgic armor piece is a rare 1 in 2,000. Pet hunters will want to stick around for the Pet Smoke Devil. You can also grab a Jar of smoke to display in your house.
The Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil features two exclusive drops: a staff known as the Shadowflame Quadrant, which launches dual spell attacks and focuses on elemental vulnerabilities, and the Devils Element, an off-hand Magic item that increases elemental weakness by 30% for all elements.
Thermonuclear Smoke Devil Combat Achievements
You can complete three Elite Combat Achievement tasks at this boss. Finishing them all gives you 12 points total.
- Thermonuclear Veteran: Kill the boss 20 times.
- Spec’d Out: Kill the boss using only special attacks. The POH spec method makes this task incredibly easy.
- Hazard Prevention: Kill the boss without it hitting anyone. You can knock this out fast with the freeze method.
That’s it. Now close this page and open the game. Then, come back to tell me which method you used. Did I forget to mention something about him? Let me know in the comments below.
FAQ
Can you kill the Thermonuclear Smoke Devil off task?
No. You must have a Smoke Devil task to damage the boss. The only exception is a single kill for the Western Provinces Elite Diary, and even then, you still need 93 Slayer.
Does Protect from Magic work?
Not really. Thermy uses a typeless magical ranged attack. Overhead prayers won’t block the damage, but high magic defense gear like Karil’s or Ancestral will help you tank more hits.
Is it better to use Magic or Melee?
Melee with a Scythe of Vitur or Osmumten’s Fang is generally the fastest for raw DPS. However, the Shadow of Tumeken is incredibly strong here due to the boss’s low magic defense. If you want a zero-damage run, use Magic with the freezing method.
What is the best way to bank?
Use a Slayer Ring to teleport back to the Smoke Devil Dungeon quickly. If you are using the POH method, a Ring of Dueling or Fairy Ring (BKP) is your best bet for fast resets.
How do I stop the boss from walking through me?
You can’t. Thermy is coded to walk through players and other monsters to prevent you from using the smaller smoke devils as a meat shield.
