How to Parry in Where Winds Meet

In Where Winds Meet, combat system may seem complex. However, with some practice, you can learn the mechanics of the game and show better performance in fights. One of the main aspects of the mechanics in Where Winds Meet is its parrying technique.

In this guide, we will teach you how to parry in Where Winds Meet and also give some useful instructions for better experiences in the combats.

Parry in Where Winds Meet

To parry an attack, press E on the keyboard or R1 on the controller (Default Settings) just before the enemy’s attack lands. You can parry all enemy attacks, including ranged ones. Keep in mind that attacks with yellow glint can only be dodged. Note that the parry button is separate from the block button.

Parry Attacks with Red Glint

Attacks with a red glint during their wind-up will deal counter damage to enemies if parried successfully. The trick is to wait until the glint reaches its brightest moment before pressing the parry button for a perfect parry.

Some Tips for Successful Parry in Where Winds Meet

Parry in PvP Mode

You can use parries to punish enemies who commit to unsafe attack combos. This helps turn the momentum in your favor and gives you some breathing room if they pause their offense. If they keep attacking, continue parrying to drain their Qi Bar. Once their Qi is fully depleted, you can finish them off with an Execute. Note that parrying is the fastest way to deplete Qi.

You can parry the first hit and sometimes several follow-up attacks in certain weapon combos. However, some weapons attack too quickly and the next strike may land before your parry animation finishes, making it impossible to parry the entire combo.

In these cases, you should parry the early hits, then switch to dodging or blocking the next attack. This still gives you a solid Qi advantage that you can use to control the fight.

You can also use parry to fake attacks, cancel animations and bait a reaction from your enemy. Once they respond, you can take advantage of it by either parrying their next move or countering with a combo of your own.

Parry In PvE Mode

If you are unsure about the parry timing, a helpful trick is to hold the block button while pressing the parry key. That way, if you miss the parry window, the attack will still be blocked and you will take less damage. Just be careful with red glint attacks, as these cannot be blocked and will break through your defense.

Parrying also is not limited by the direction you are facing. You can parry attacks coming from behind, which is especially useful when fighting multiple enemies or bosses that teleport or disappear.

Some enemies have extremely fast attack patterns. For these moves, it is often effective to spam the parry button, since the timing window is usually forgiving.

If you are playing on Story or Recommended mode, you can enable Parry Assist in the settings. This slows down time and shows a prompt when an enemy attacks to help you parry. Keep in mind that these assists are limited and are shown as small bars under your Qi Meter.

Parrying is the difference between struggling through a fight and looking like a martial arts master. It takes a bit of practice to get the “feel” for different weapon speeds but once you do, you will be unstoppable.
