How to Fish Game Drip Fish: How to Find and Use Them

A drip fish is the rare version of a normal creature, and you spot one by the rainbow text floating over its name. My first was a Drip Rock Crab on the Lighthouse island, maybe ten minutes into the game, and I had no idea what I had just punched. There is no special bait for them and no trick that forces one to spawn.

What Is a Drip Fish in How to Fish?
A drip fish is not a new species. It is the same creature underneath, with the same health and the same behaviour, wearing a stupid outfit. My Drip Clownfish had a tiny hat. One of the drip Pike variants is shaped like a bicycle.
Here is the part that trips people up. Some of players talk about “rare variants” and “drip creatures” as if they are two different collections layered on top of the normal fish. They are not. Press Tab and the encyclopedia shows exactly two counters, both out of 49. One for normal creatures, one for drip creatures. That is the whole system.

The normal side feeds collector. The drip side feeds Fishipedia. They do not talk to each other, which matters more than it sounds. A drip catch does not fill the normal slot for that species, and a normal catch does not fill the drip slot. I lost a Drip Mackerel early on because I assumed I had already covered mackerel and sold it without checking.
How to Find Drip Fish in How to Fish
There is no drip lure. I spent a while looking for one, and it does not exist. Drip variants come out of the same pool as their normal counterpart, which means the search is not really about drip at all, it is about fishing the right pool long enough.
So the method is backwards from what you would expect. Work out which normal creature the missing drip belongs to, go to the island that creature lives on, and use that pool’s lure until a rainbow one shows up.
| Area | Rod / Lure |
|---|---|
| Lighthouse | Crab Fishing Rod with the Free Lure or Hot Dog |
| Island 2 / Forest | Fishing Rod with the Free Lure or Beginner Lure |
| Island 3 / Desert | Fishing Rod with the Standard Lure |
| Island 4 / Rocks | Fishing Rod with the Professional Lure |
| Island 5 / Volcano | Fishing Rod with the Scientific Lure |
Ground creatures count too. The clams and crabs you pick up or punch on the shore have drip versions, and I got two of my early ones without casting a line at all.
The kill is what registers the entry, not the catch. Reel a drip creature in and let it flop around and nothing happens. Punch it, shoot it, whatever you like. It just has to die.
If you are still working through the islands and cannot reach the later lure tiers yet, our full How to Fish Guide covers the progression in order.
How to Check Which Drip Fish You Are Missing
Press Tab. The encyclopedia lists every creature and keeps the drip set on its own, so any blank slot on the drip side is a variant you have not killed. This is the only reliable way to know where you stand, and I would check it before every hunting session rather than trusting your memory of what you caught.

The encyclopedia has one real weakness. It tells you which entry is blank, but it will not tell you which island that creature lives on. Once you are down to your last few, you are matching names to islands yourself and then grinding that pool.
Should You Sell Drip Fish or Use Them at the Reel of Fortune?
The Reel of Fortune is the slot machine sitting on every island, and the prompt on it is blunt: Insert drip creature to play. Drip creatures are the only thing it accepts. Feed one in, the reels spin, and you get a weapon skin out the other end. The rarest results are legendary skins, which we cover in our How to Fish skins guide.
What nobody tells you is that gambling is not your only option. Drip creatures sell like any other catch, and some of them are worth real money.
| Drip creature | Sell value |
|---|---|
| Drip Rock Crab | $5 |
| Drip Salmon | $14 |
| Drip Parrotfish | High enough that I kept it |
My rule after a few hours is that cheap drips go in the machine, expensive ones go to the shop. A Drip Rock Crab at $5 costs you nothing to gamble away, so there is no reason not to spin. When I pulled up a Drip Parrotfish on Island 4, the sell price was high enough that feeding it into a slot machine felt genuinely stupid, and I sold it instead.
The one reassuring thing is that none of this is permanent. Drip creatures respawn forever, so anything you gamble away comes back eventually. The only thing you actually spend is time.

The Hardest Drip Fish to Find
Spawn rates are low, and a few of these are much worse than the rest. If you have been fishing one spot for hours and getting nothing, you are almost certainly not doing anything wrong.
The worst offenders I have seen people struggle with:
- Drip Voxelfish — one player ran the Professional Lure on Island 4 for five hours and did not pull a single normal Voxelfish, let alone the drip
- Drip Goldfish and Drip Goby — both live on Island 2, and people report catching three or four other drips from that pool while these two refuse to appear
- Drippy Dipper — three hours and around 300 baits with nothing to show for it
For scale, one player finished six hours of play with exactly one drip creature. Another was sitting at roughly half the collection after a full run. There is no published spawn rate, so treat any specific number you see as a guess.
When to Farm Drip Fish in How to Fish
Leave it until the credits roll. Once the story is done you wake up back on the first island with all five islands unlocked and every piece of gear you earned still in your inventory, which turns a slow grind into something you can actually manage. Creatures that used to take a magazine now die in a shot or two, and you can move between islands freely instead of fighting your way back.
During the story, kill any drip creature that shows up in front of you and then move on. I would not stop progression to camp a spawn. Nothing here is missable. Every variant respawns indefinitely, so the only cost of waiting is that you have to come back.
That is really the whole thing. Fishipedia is a patience test more than a puzzle, and once you understand that the collection is just 49 normal fish and 49 rainbow ones tracked side by side, the rest is a matter of reading the blanks and picking the right lure.
