Control Resonant Patterned Thought: How to Get & Farm It

Patterned Thought is one of the later upgrade materials in Control Resonant, used for high-level Aberrant upgrades and Artifact crafting.

If you have upgrades asking for Patterned Thought but haven’t found any yet, you probably aren’t missing a hidden early-game source. The material becomes much more common once you reach the Unknown, where tougher Hedron enemies can drop it (don’t look for it early game).

There are also several guaranteed Patterned Thought rewards during late-game quests, a hidden pickup, and a vendor that sells it after the story. If you need more than those fixed rewards, however, farming Hedron enemies in the Unknown is the practical option.

How to Get Patterned Thought in Control Resonant

The main ways to get Patterned Thought are:

  • Defeat tougher Hedron enemies in the Unknown
  • Defeat the Hedron Parallel, Hedron Factor and Hedron Proxy
  • Farm respawning Hedron enemies around Twisted Rooftops
  • Collect one from the Pulse Fitness secret area
  • Buy it from the Unknown Vendor after gaining access to that vendor

Patterned Thought is specifically associated with difficult Hedron enemies, while materials such as Corrupted Element and Distorted Form come from tougher Hiss enemies instead.

That distinction is useful when farming. If you need Patterned Thought, focus on the Hedron enemies in the Unknown rather than simply killing everything in Manhattan.

Best Patterned Thought Farm

The most useful repeatable Patterned Thought farms found so far are around Twisted Rooftops in the Unknown.

I found two Patterned enemies around Twisted Rooftops that respawn and can drop both Patterned Thought and Ordered Image. If the enemies stop respawning, returning toward the large flashes in the middle of the area can cause the loop to work again.

Another method is to use a Hedron elite in the central Unknown:

  1. Start from the Twisted Rooftops door.
  2. Look toward the mapping tower.
  3. Head to the rooftop directly behind it, keeping the same gravitational orientation as the door.
  4. Kill the Hedron elite there.
  5. Travel to the Gap.
  6. Return to the same location.
  7. Kill the respawned Hedron elite again.

The Hedron elite has a chance to drop Patterned Thought or Ordered Image, so repeat the loop until you have what you need.

When Does Patterned Thought Start Dropping?

Don’t worry if Patterned Thought isn’t appearing while you’re still progressing through the earlier regions.

Regular Patterned Thought drops in the last part of the game, particularly after the Underpass when you reach the Unknown and begin fighting the relevant Hedron enemies.

So if you’re still before that point, continuing the story is usually more useful than trying to farm earlier areas.

Guaranteed Patterned Thought Rewards

Several late-game Hedron encounters give Patterned Thought directly, so you will naturally collect some while progressing.

Hedron Parallel rewards 3 Patterned Thought when defeated.

During Sever the Hedron Links, the Hedron Factor and Hedron Proxy provide another 4 Patterned Thought between them. Combined with the 3 from Hedron Parallel, these three encounters can give you 7 Patterned Thought.

There is another guaranteed piece hidden inside Pulse Fitness in the Unknown. Solving the gym puzzle opens a hidden basement containing:

  • 1 Patterned Thought
  • 1 Health Upgrade Point
  • 46 Source

These guaranteed rewards are useful if you only need a few pieces for an upgrade and don’t want to start farming yet.

Can You Buy Patterned Thought?

Yes, but the vendor isn’t an early solution.

The Unknown Vendor sells both Patterned Thought and Ordered Image alongside other late-game materials. The vendor is found on the island to the right of Field Office Island.

However, the relevant island and its fast-travel access only become available after finishing the story.

That explains why searching for Patterned Thought can be confusing before then: you may see that a merchant sells it, check the merchants currently available to you, and find nothing.

For players still going through the story, Hedron drops and quest rewards are the sources that actually matter.

What Is Patterned Thought Used For?

Patterned Thought is mainly used for late Aberrant upgrades and Artifact crafting.

Several advanced skill-tree upgrades require it:

  • Lift Shock: 6 Patterned Thought
  • Gain Control: 6
  • Astral Ascendant: 6
  • Hard Stop: 4
  • Plain Retort: 4
  • Drill Down: 4
  • Imminent Knockout: 10
  • Deathly Trajectory: 10
  • Limitless Intensity: 10

This is why Patterned Thought can suddenly become a bottleneck near the end of the game. Several different builds eventually ask for it, and some individual upgrades require as many as 10 pieces.

Golden Earrings

Patterned Thought is also required to craft the Golden Earrings Artifact.

The recipe is: Untapped Golden Earrings + 10 Patterned Thought + 1,000 Source + 7 Odd Echo

Golden Earrings gives +20% Filter, but reduces Raw Damage by 30%. Because Golden Earrings alone takes 10 Patterned Thought, I wouldn’t spend your entire supply on it immediately if you also have late Aberrant upgrades waiting. Check which skills your current build actually uses first.

The Fastest Approach

If you only need a few Patterned Thoughts, keep progressing through the Unknown and defeat the Hedron bosses. Their guaranteed rewards may give you enough without any farming.

If you’re trying to finish several late skill-tree upgrades or craft Golden Earrings as well, use the Twisted Rooftops Hedron farm. Kill the elite, reset it by going to the Gap and returning and repeat until you have enough Patterned Thought.

And if you haven’t reached the Unknown yet, don’t spend time searching earlier zones for a reliable farm. Patterned Thought is deliberately tied to later progression, so if it’s too early for you, try those missions and side missions (like The Complete Set) which are suitable for your current phase.
