Gothic Remake Smithing: How to Master It

I’m gonna explain how Gothic Remake smithing works and how to find its trainers, how to craft better swords and all the other tips I know. I also discuss whether smithing is really worth it or not. Maybe you’ve heard that it’s a great way to make ore, but you’re not sure about it.

Read this, and you’ll walk away knowing exactly what to do next.

Huno the Blacksmith Teaches You

You know, you can’t just walk up to an anvil and start cranking out swords. First, you need to find someone to teach you the Smithing skill.

One of your guys for this is Huno, the blacksmith in the Old Camp. You’ll find him in the smithing hut, right near the arena/fighting pit.

Go talk to him. He’ll teach you the Smithing skill for a cost of 10 Learning Points and 50 Ore. Pay up, and now you’re officially an apprentice smith. This unlocks the ability to craft basic one-handed weapons for yourself.

The Forging Process: Your Handmade Sword

Learning the skill is just the first step. Actually, making a weapon is a hands-on process.

Here’s how you turn raw materials into a cold, hard sword:

  • Get the Goods: First, you need Raw Steel. You can buy this cheaply from Huno himself, or from other smiths around the colony.
  • Heat It Up: Take your Raw Steel to a forge (the fire).
  • Hammer It Out
  • Quench It: Dunk that Hot Blade into the water trough to cool it down.
  • Put an Edge on It: Finally, take your Cooled Blade to the grindstone to sharpen it.

Congratulations, you’ve just crafted a crude sword!

A Tip: After learning from Huno, wait until the next day and return. He’ll offer you a small task which is about crafting five sickles for a merchant named Fisk. Complete this, and Huno rewards you with 100 XP, blueprints for “Shnyg’s Bite” (a solid early sword), oak wood, and leather strips.

Going for Master Smithing

You want advanced smithing? Well, first you should pass the Huno sections. After that you can go for Stone so he will teach you to make Two-Handed weapons.

Where to Find Stone

Stone works in the smithy on the left side of the inner ring area of the Old Camp castle, directly across from the fire mage quarters.

The Templar’s Sword Quest

Once Stone teaches you Master Smithing, he immediately mentions a legendary templar sword and wants you to retrieve it. Do these to complete the quest.

Travel to the Swamp Camp and find Gor Na Zar. A templar sitting in a niche under a sunshade to the left of the steps leading up to the Temple of Yu’Berion.

You have two options with Gor.

  • Violent: Knock him out, grab the blade, and run. The camp goes hostile temporarily, but minor crimes fade after a day.
  • Smart: Leave him alone. He’ll suggest you learn to forge the weapon from Darrion instead. This is obviously the better path because it teaches you the crafting recipes permanently.

Go to Darrion

Darrion is the blacksmith in Swamp Camp. You can find him near merchant Fortuno. You can buy the light two-handed sword blueprint from him. Well, there are some crafting requirements to make that War Sword you want:

MaterialAmount
Great Blade (forged from 9x Steel)1
Ironwood2
Steel1
Leather Strips3

Forge the War Sword and bring it back to Stone to complete the quest.

Where to Get Materials

Crafting swords in the game needs some specific materials and you should know How to find each:

Raw SteelBuy from Huno (Old Camp) or Darrion (Swamp Camp)
Steel IngotsDarrion
IronwoodDarrion
Leather StripsQuest rewards (Huno’s sickle quest gives one) or buy from vendors

Another useful material for crafting swords is Petrified wood. You can find it on the locations below:

Is Smithing Really Worth It?

Many players ask this.

Why even waste time on smithing when bandits drop free swords? The choice depends on you. But honestly smithing is not my favorite way of earning money. Most of the time its profit really is not worth it.

Anyway, Smithing lets you craft reliable gear, unlock better schematics, and upgrade your faction armor. Oh, and also with smithing you can forge stronger, fancier weapons as you find new materials and that’s another important thing.

FAQs

Can I upgrade faction armor with smithing?

Yes, but only after joining a faction. Visit your faction’s smith (Stone for Old Camp, Wolf for New Camp, Darrion for Swamp Camp).

Is the Templar’s Sword quest mandatory?

No but do it anyway. It’s the only way to learn the War Sword recipe permanently. Choose the “Smart” option with Gor because it teaches you recipes.

Can I learn Master Smithing without joining the Old Camp?

No. Stone is in the Old Camp’s inner ring.

What if I lose a crafted weapon?

They don’t break permanently. Just repair them at a grindstone with Leather Strips. No permanent loss unless you sell or drop them.

    1. Appreciate your attention, but which part is incorrect? I double-checked everything and I didn’t find any major or minor mistakes:).

  1. the article feels written or at least proofed by an ai. I had the same feeling reading it as listening to an AI voiced slop video. the information though correct is pretty subjective and no offence, but mostly irrelevant. would be nice to give a list of the crafting recipes locations, some rare ones, best ones, when they become available and stuff like that.. but I suppose that would take (more) effort..

People who search for these things really don’t care to read the same stuff they find in game when doing the quest. that’s just padding for the article and has no use to a player.. maybe if it was a video, but not even then.

a guide (as in what I’m looking for when i search for guides) should be about who is the trainer or trainers, what caveats do they have (such as: unlocks in act 2 or need to be part of a group, etc) and how to get through them easily, recipes, like i said, honest tips (not that poor excuse for a FAQ you added, no offence that’s free chatgpt right there) , known exploits, etcetera.

imagine you were doing a smithing only playthrough, what do you need to know..

anyway, that’s all i had to say. hope this comment goes through..

    1. I appreciate your comment Ben. This guide has been written early with my own experience in the game and some community information. Yes, some information here may seem basic but probably would help many confused players. In later updates, I’ll try to make the text more complete.
