Phantom Blade Zero: The Hunt Boss Guide: Both Fights & Rewards

The Hunt, Hunter of the Order, is one of the first fights in Phantom Blade Zero. He wields two scythes in his first phase and six in his second phase, which happens later on; he is nimble and moves around a lot. I’m going to give strategies and tips to beat this boss.

Where to Find The Hunt in Phantom Blade Zero
You will have two encounters with The Hunt in Phantom Blade Zero. He is a major boss in the first chapter of the game.
First Encounter at The Moving Cart
At the very beginning of the game, you find yourself on a cart, and some people on horses attack you. After defeating these attackers, Hunt arrives, showing you a prize on your head and initiating the first phase of the boss fight.

Second Encounter at The Great Waterfall
The first fight ends with a scripted story transition. Then, at a full, mandatory, two-phase boss battle near the end of Weeping Creek Valley, we get to have a rematch with Hunt and actually finish the job

The Hunt on the Moving Cart
The first boss fight happens right after the tutorial fight with the horse riders and puts your understanding of the basic mechanics to the test. So if you want a comprehensive guide on Parry and other battle-related topics in Phantom Blade Zero, check out our guide on Phantom Blade Zero parry guide.
Hunt is an aggressive attacker, and you can’t match the damage he can put out with equal aggression. He teaches you to be patient and respect the bosses in the game. Play defensively and try to get damage windows by parrying his attacks.
This fight ends when Soul heavily wounds Hunt and he falls off the cart, but Soul jumps off a broken bridge (Very Fast and Furious of him) and fails to catch himself as his heart explodes.
The Hunt Boss Attacks and How to Counter Them
In this section, I will go into detail about the boss fight and list all his moves plus ways to counter them.
Encounter 1: Hunter of the Order (Cart)
As we talked about, this encounter teaches us defence, patience, and parry, and is the more predictable of the two fights. Hunt doesn’t have as much freedom of movement as he wants to have, and his fights are limited to three main styles: in the air, on the horse’s back, and in the cart.

| Attack or Movement | What The Hunt Does | Recommended Response |
|---|---|---|
| Mounted Sickle Slashes | Attacks from horseback beside the moving cart. | Block, manage Sha-Chi, and watch for the next opening. |
| Leap onto the Cart | Closes the distance and begins melee attacks. | Respond to the attack indicator, then counterattack when safe. |
| Chained Melee Combo | Delivers multiple quick strikes. | Defend through the string; look for the parryable finisher. |
| Blue-Flash Leap | Jumps toward Soul with a blue attack indicator. | Time a parry. |
| Red-Flash Strike | Executes an unblockable move. | Dodge instead of blocking. |
| Long-Range Chain Swing | Attacks from farther away using the extended weapon. | Track his position and defend until the sequence finishes. |
Encounter 2: Sixfold Scythe
This is the harder fight compared to the previous one. Here, the player is now more experienced and has had time to collect some weapons, upgrade them, and get some upgrades for Soul as well. In this Arena, Hunt now gets to move widely and has two phases. In phase one, Hunter is still named Hunter of the Order.
In this encounter, Hunt is as oppressive as he was on the cart, and if you are using the Jagged Steel like me, only attack when you have a solid window.

After depleting his health bar, Hunt will transform and grow two more arms, becoming Hunt the Sixfold Scythe. Here’s the fight checkpoint as well. If you die, you start the fight from this moment and not from the beginning.

Phase 1: Hunter of the Order (Waterfall)
In this fight in general, only go for heavy punishment when you have broken Hunt’s guard and made him vulnerable, and if you have a light enough weapon, you can try to chip in some damage with single light attacks when he gets close enough. Anything other than this, and Hunt will punish you with his superior aggression and damage output.

| Attack | Visual Cue | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Five-Hit Sickle Combo | Repeated fast slashes with a strong finishing strike. | Defend the early hits and parry the finishing blue attack. |
| Double Side Jump | Two lateral jumps before a forward lunge. | Don’t chase the jumps; prepare for the approaching combo. |
| Backflip Axe Throw | Backward somersault that transitions into a thrown weapon. | Watch the projectile instead of assuming he is retreating. |
| Wide Chained Swings | The Hunt extends his weapon reach. | Keep room to move and wait for the last strike. |
| Aerial Attack | He rises into the air and attacks from above. | Track him and parry or dodge according to the attack indicator. |
Phase 2: Hunter The Sixfold Scythe
I thought that two hands meant a berserked version of Hunt, but I was mistaken. Hunt chooses distance more and tries to hit you with extended scythe attacks. Keep distance, and fishing out perfect parries is the best strategy for this fight. Don’t get too close to Hunt; there’s no need to. He will jump into the air to do 4 extended Scythe attacks; the last one is parryable. Successfully parry the last one to make Soul jump into melee range with Hunt, allowing you to punish him with some good hits.
Rinse and repeat until the guard breaks, and go all out on Hunt. Do this around 6 times, and it should take care of Hunt’s HP bar. Just make sure to avoid his tornado. That thing shreds your HP and Sha-Chi.

| Attack | What to Look For | Recommended Response |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple Sickle Projectiles | Slashes traveling toward Soul from range. | Dodge the projectile. They are very slow. |
| Wider Chained Slashes | Additional arms extending the attack coverage. Blue light attack at the end. | Maintain space and avoid assuming the combo has finished. |
| Aerial Spinning Combo | The Hunt rises and executes a series of chain strikes. | Defend the sequence and prepare for the final blue-flash attack. |
| Whirlewind | Large attack spreading across part of the arena. | Move out of its path. |
| Waterfall Chain Attack | The Hunt retreats backward hastily, summoning purple chains and jumping down on Soul | Clear the purple area and prepare to parry his jump attack |
| Returning Blue-Flash Lunge | He rapidly re-enters melee range after repositioning. | Parry with correct timing, then punish. |
Best Weapons and Builds Against The Hunt
The build I went for was with Jagged Steel as my first main weapon and Sanguin Twins as my second main weapon. What I understood was that the Sanguin Twins worked better for the first Phase of the Waterfall rematch. Hunt gives smaller windows to hit until his guard is broken, and when it is, the Twins can deal great damage due to the fast combo. Jagged Steel was incredible for the second phase, as it gave me more windows to build my bleed effects on Hunt.
For the secondary, I chose the Dread Axe for some sweet Sha-Chi damage. You need to defeat Peng Meng to receive this axe. If you are struggling against him, check out our guide on defeating Peng Meng.
The Hunt Boss Rewards: Hunter’s Chain Sickle
The Hunt’s Scythes are the reward of this boss fight. Alongside pretty good damage output and a three-hit chain attack, you can also use the chains like grappling hooks and traverse the map.
