The Witcher 3 School Gears: Where to Find Each Set

In Witcher 3, there are six Witcher School Gears overall: Griffin – Wolf – Forgotten Wolf – Cat – Viper – Manticore. Each set consists of both armor and swords (both steel and silver). The armor can be light, medium, or heavy, depending on which Witcher School it belongs to. The armor also offers different types of bonuses.

The Swords, on the other hand, act more like supplements to their respective School armor set. Swords favor different combat playstyles. You’re going to want to pick your choice depending on which Witcher School they belong to and what type of bonus they offer. We’ll go through each School’s Gear.

Griffin Gear

Armor Type: Medium | Best for: Signs and Magic

Griffin School Gear is for those of you who enjoy mixing Signs with your swordplay. From its Basic tier, it increases Sign Intensity, while its Grandmaster bonuses allow faster spell combinations and stronger Yrden traps. The Witcher 3 Griffin Gear is one of the best choices for a Sign-focused build, and is considered one of the best armors in the game overall.

Wolf Gear

Armor Type: Medium | Best for: Balanced Combat and Bleeding

While Griffin focused heavily on Sign Intensity, Wolf School Gear offers a balance between sword attacks and Signs. This makes it a versatile choice for almost any fight you get into. Its Grandmaster bonuses improve sword damage through Bleeding effects, making it a great choice for those of you who prefer aggressive combat and accumulating Adrenaline Points.

Forgotten Wolf Gear

Armor Type: Medium | Best for: Aard, Yrden, and Potions

Forgotten Wolven Gear is actually inspired by Geralt’s armor from Netflix’s The Witcher series, donned by none other than Henry Cavill. This medium armor set combines sword combat with Signs and alchemy. Its Grandmaster bonuses extend potion duration and increase Aard’s damage against enemies affected by Yrden.

Cat Gear

Armor Type: Light | Best for: Fast Attacks and Critical Hits

Since Cat School Gear is light, it focuses on speed and aggressive swordplay rather than heavy protection. It enhances fast attacks and critical hits, and its Grandmaster bonuses focus on both strong and fast attacks so you can combine both types of attacks. It also increases damage when Geralt is striking enemies from behind. It’s perfect for a dodge-heavy fighting style.

Bear Gear

Armor Type: Heavy | Best for: Defense, Quen, and Strong Attacks

For those of you who prefer heavy armor (and NOT Cat armor), Bear School Gear, also known as Ursine Gear, focuses on maximum protection and heavy sword attacks. It offers us excellent damage resistance and increased Adrenaline Point gain, while its Grandmaster bonuses can automatically restore a broken Quen shield and boost Quen-related damage. It’s perfect for a tanky, defensive Geralt.

Viper Gear

Armor Type: Medium | Best for: Poison Resistance and Defense

Viper School Gear, introduced in Hearts of Stone, offers excellent protection against poison, elemental damage, and physical attacks. Its venomous swords can also poison enemies. Unlike most Witcher School sets, Viper Gear has no Grandmaster set bonuses.

Manticore Gear

Armor Type: Medium | Best for: Alchemy, Potions, and Bombs

Manticore School Gear, introduced in Blood and Wine, is meant for alchemy-focused builds. It increases maximum capacity for Toxicity and improves critical-hit damage. And if you get all its set, you’ll receive bonuses that strengthen bombs and provide additional alchemy charges. It’s ideal for players who rely heavily on potions and explosives.

Alex March

Alex fell in love with video games at the age of 4, when his father bought him his first PC. He considers video games to be the upgraded version of the best books: a form of interactive art. His love of RPGs comes from the fact that he can spend hours immersed in a fictional universe and make choices that have meaningful impacts on the story. As a child, Alex would often spend hours trying to figure out the side quests in random games. There were no internet guides back then, so he knows exactly how frustratingly confusing or borderline impossible games can get. He intends to dedicate himself to saving other gamers from suffering the same fate.
