Planet Zoo 2 Flyable Area: Aviary Setup and Troubleshooting

Building a Planet Zoo 2 aviary sounds simple until your habitat shows 0 Flyable Area, even though your birds have a roof over their heads. Not exactly the grand opening you had in mind. Unlike regular habitats, aviaries need a proper functional roof that creates enclosed flying space. A decorative roof might not count, and sometimes the game doesn’t calculate flying space correctly even when everything looks fine.

Getting that right is the key to keeping birds like the Toco Toucan or Long-Eared Owl comfortable. Here’s how to build one and deal with the problems that might come up.

How to Fix 0 Flyable Area in Planet Zoo 2

One frustrating issue in Planet Zoo 2 is an aviary displaying 0 Flyable Area even when it looks fully enclosed.

First, select the habitat and confirm that you’ve generated its roof through the aviary system. A regular building roof alone doesn’t establish a functional flying enclosure. If the habitat is still empty, introduce your chosen bird when the enclosure is ready, then check the Flyable Area reading again. The calculation may update after an animal enters, although this isn’t a guaranteed fix.

You can also try raising the roof using its support poles to provide more overhead space. Remember that flying birds need usable space above the ground, not just a large habitat footprint.

If the reading remains at zero despite a completed roof and a bird inside, don’t assume the habitat is too small. The problem may involve how the game calculates flying space, and there isn’t a confirmed fix that works in every case.

How to Create Flyable Area in Planet Zoo 2

Start by drawing a closed habitat boundary using the barrier tools. Add a Habitat Staff Gate so your keepers can access the enclosure. When the boundary is complete, select the habitat and use Add Roof to generate a mesh covering.

The roof forms around the habitat’s barriers and support poles. You don’t need to build the entire covering piece by piece, which saves a fair amount of work. You can adjust the support poles to change the roof’s height and overall shape. The Roof Curve setting also lets you customize the covering instead of settling for a flat roof.

I’d get the roof sorted before spending too much time decorating. Moving a support pole is much easier when you haven’t filled the place with trees. Keep in mind that ordinary decorative roof pieces aren’t necessarily recognized as a functional aviary covering. I recommend using the actual Add Roof feature.

Which Birds Can Live in Aviaries?

Planet Zoo 2 includes flying species such as the Toco Toucan and Long-Eared Owl. You can also build aviaries for the White-Tailed Sea-Eagle or Great Hornbill, while the Golden Eagle is available through the Deluxe Edition.

However, not every bird needs an aviary. Species such as the African Penguin or Common Ostrich use regular habitats rather than flying enclosures.

Planet Zoo 2 Aviary Nesting: Cup Nests and Bird Requirements

Flying birds have different habitat requirements, so check the Zoopedia before deciding how large to make your aviary.

Birds use three-dimensional navigation and can perch on suitable trees or habitat objects. However, they don’t spend every moment in the air. Some species naturally prefer walking or moving through shallow water, so seeing a bird on the ground doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.

Breeding also requires suitable nesting locations. The game includes cavity nests and cup nests for appropriate species. Water platforms and mud nests are available for birds with different nesting needs. Choose the type that matches your bird’s requirements.

Can Guests Walk Through Aviaries?

Yes, Planet Zoo 2 supports walk-through aviaries where visitors can enter the enclosure and watch birds up close. However, this only works with species that can safely share their habitat with guests. Check the selected bird’s requirements before building guest paths inside.

I’d make sure the birds are comfortable before inviting a crowd into their home. A nice view is great, but not if it comes at the expense of animal welfare.
