Ace Combat 8 Mission 16 Guide: Ships, UAVs & Currus

Ace Combat 8 Mission 16: Singer briefly turns Joker Flight into customs inspectors with missiles. Three terrorist container ships are hidden among civilian traffic, and treating every radar lock as permission to fire is a very bad idea.
Fortunately, the targets all share the same giveaway: three cranes on the deck and a sun emblem on the hull. When you know that, the search becomes much easier. The other thing to watch for is the Explosive UAV phase, which can quickly become the real threat if you’re not ready for it. If you’re replaying Singer for money, Mission 16 is also one of the best options covered in our Ace Combat 8 MRP farm guide.

How to Find the Ships in Ace Combat 8 Mission 16
There are exactly three disguised container ships to destroy in Mission 16. The best way to identify one is to confirm both markings before firing: three cranes across the deck and the sun emblem painted on the hull. Civilian ships don’t share that complete combination.

The targets are concentrated around the northwest shipping area, so you don’t need to inspect the entire map equally. I find it easier to make a wider pass over each container ship rather than getting right on top of it. The cranes are obvious from above, while the emblem is easier to confirm from the side.
Once you’ve confirmed a target, sink it and move on. Chasing every fighter in the area only gives the mission more time to become complicated.

What to Do When the Explosive UAVs Launch
The terrorist ships are preparing self-destruct drones during the search. The mission dialogue states that assembly takes less than ten minutes, and the moment the Explosive UAVs are airborne, they become the priority.
Don’t assume destroying the ships means you can immediately relax either. The UAV sequence can still become part of the mission. When it does, stop worrying about the shipping lane and start climbing.

The drones head upward toward the Space Elevator, and 40,000 feet is the critical altitude. Focus on the UAVs that are already highest rather than getting dragged into unnecessary dogfights below them.
Best Loadout for Ace Combat 8 Mission 16
The three ships are stationary surface targets, so you don’t need to build the entire aircraft around anti-ground firepower. I’d favor a setup with a multi-target air-to-air weapon for the UAV phase instead.
When you see several Explosive UAVs climbing at the same time, being able to engage more than one target quickly is far more useful than bringing excessive firepower for three cargo ships. I recommend using multi-lock air-to-air weapons for this phase. In short, prepare for the part that can actually ruin the run. The container ships aren’t going anywhere.

How to Spawn Currus in Ace Combat 8 Mission 16
Mission 16 also contains the hidden Ace Currus, flying an F-16C Fighting Falcon. Currus appears when the UAVs are launched. He’s one of the conditional enemy Aces, so the mission must also be played on Veteran difficulty or higher for him to appear.
If you’re specifically after Currus and his Assault Record, don’t try to finish Singer before the UAV phase develops. Let the launch begin, take down his F-16C, and then finish the mission.
How to Get S Rank in Ace Combat 8 Mission 16
For S rank, don’t treat Mission 16 as a pure speedrun. Ace Combat 8 mission grades account for completion time, enemy destruction, bonus targets and mission-specific objectives, so finishing quickly while still building enough score is the better way to go.
The biggest time loss in Singer is usually the ship search itself. Once you can identify the three-crane and sun-emblem combination without making repeated passes, the mission becomes much easier to run efficiently.

S rank attempts can also be completed through Free Mission, so there’s no need to force the perfect run during your first campaign clear.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 16 Quick Tip
The real trick to Ace Combat 8 Mission 16 isn’t better aim; it’s knowing what you’re allowed to shoot. First, head toward the northwest shipping area, and there, you want to identify the three container ships by their three cranes and sun emblem. Be ready to switch immediately to the Explosive UAVs if they launch.
