WARDOGS Drill Guide: Pull the Hot Zone to Your FOB

In WARDOGS, the Drill is a buildable oil rig you place at your Forward Operating Base that, once fed enough fuel, yanks the Hot Zone straight to your location and holds it there.

Understanding how it works, how to set it up properly and how to defend it is the difference between floating around the map hoping the zone favors you and forcing the entire match to revolve around your base. I’ll help you understand everything about it!

Important Note: The game is still on the playtest, so some aspects and mechanics of the game may change in upcoming updates and the final version. This guide will be updated within the changes in the later versions of the game.

Drill Actually Changes the Match in WARDOGS

Points only come from having the most players inside the large Combat Zone, with a score tick every thirty seconds. Nested inside that zone is the smaller Hot Zone, where every player counts as two and cash rewards are significantly higher.

Left alone, the Hot Zone drifts around the map in a roughly triangular pattern, spending only about a third of the match in any one team’s sector. Activating a Drill (or completing a tower code) changes that completely.

The Hot Zone races toward your FOB and stays locked in place until the fuel runs out. Even after the drill stops, the zone often lingers on your side of the map for a while before drifting away again. Run the timing well and you can keep the high-value area in your third of the map for fifty to seventy percent of the game. That sustained presence is what turns a normal match into a one-sided scoreboard.

What You Need Before You Start Building

You cannot simply drop a drill and expect miracles. The bare minimum requirements are:

  • Level 3 hammer (Support progression)
  • An FOB inside the Combat Zone
  • Fuel (lots of it)
  • At least one logistics player who actually brings supplies instead of joyriding the helicopter

The ideal FOB location sits near the edge of the Combat Zone and as close as practical to your own HQ, shortening the supply runs that keep the entire strategy alive. Fuel is the real currency here. A proper full cycle usually wants around six thousand units. You can start the drill with less, but it will shut down early and the Hot Zone will wander off before you have squeezed full value out of it.

The Correct Order of Operations

Rush to the Combat Zone at the start of the match, plant the FOB, and claim the maximum possible build area.

Wall the entire compound properly, going double or triple high wherever snipers can get angles. Easy jump-up spots are invitations for trouble, so eliminate them.

Prioritize Defenses

Before you even think about the drill itself, prioritize defenses. The Vanguard Ciws (anti-air) is better to comes first because it shreds nearby helicopters faster than anything else.

Mortars come next. You will need them both to protect your own drill and to punish the other teams when they try the same strategy. Only after those pieces are in place do you build the Drill Rig. While it is running, expand the defenses further with corner bunkers, layered doors that create airlocks, sandbags and speaker towers so you can actually direct the random teammates who will inevitably show up.

After the Drill is Activated

Once the drill is active, the job shifts to concentration. Get as many of your teammates as possible into the Combat Zone.

Use the speaker tower or voice chat to keep people following the Hot Zone instead of wandering into no-man’s-land.

When the fuel runs dry and the zone begins to drift, resist the urge to fire the next drill immediately. Wait until your team stops winning the score ticks, then restart. Fuel is finite and every wasted cycle hurts.
A Tip I Know: Multiple drills can exist in the same FOB, each with its own cooldown, which lets a well-supplied team chain pulls almost continuously.

Tower Codes: An Alternative for Drills

WARDOGS Map towers offer a second way to pull the Hot Zone. Capturing them and collecting the single digit codes from their control rooms lets a team enter the full sequence at a terminal and drag the zone to that tower.

Many strong teams simply combine both methods by planting a full FOB and Drill Rig on or next to a tower. The result is high ground, an existing structure that is harder to completely destroy, and two independent ways to lock the Hot Zone.

How to Do it

Inside the Combat Zone you’ll find several numbered Drill Towers (usually three to five, depending on the current match). Capture a tower by interacting with the computer console and your team receives one digit of a longer code.

Every tower your faction holds adds another digit. Once you have the full sequence, any player can walk up to a tower terminal and enter it. Success pulls the Hot Zone straight to that tower and holds it there for a short window.

There is no permanent or shared code that works across matches. The sequence is generated fresh every round and resets the moment someone successfully activates it, so both sides start the race again. A smart team shares digits in chat the second they get them (for example typing “XX6” when they only know the third digit). If you’re missing only one number, you can often brute-force the last digit from a safe tower instead of fighting for the final contested one.

Living Through the Inevitable Counterattack

The moment other teams realize you are successfully drilling, the match turns into a focused siege. The most dangerous tools against a drilling base are the SPH-2 artillery tank, which can sit more than two and a half kilometers away and mortars with their shorter but still dangerous reach.

Attack helicopters hunting the SPH-2, C4 parachute drops from Little Birds, repeated sniper pressure on builders, UAVs deleting drills from safety and SAMs placed in tower middle floors to murder logistics helicopters all become standard responses. Direct assaults, gate demolitions with C4 or IEDs and FOB hacking round out the menu of misery.

What Should You Do

Your answers are the same tools pointed in the other direction:

Thick layered walls and bunkers so snipers waste time, counter-mortaring their positions, helicopters or C4 runs on their artillery, your own UAVs and constant pressure on their logistics so they cannot keep their own drills fueled.

Kill the operators of their SAMs, those systems need clear lines of sight and become easy prey for patient snipers.

The goal is never to eliminate pressure entirely. The goal is to keep fuel flowing and the drill cycling while the other two teams spend their energy trying to stop you.

The Real Boss Fight Is Logistics

Everything above collapses without fuel and building supplies. Protect the helicopters and vehicles that keep the FOB stocked the same way you would protect the last working coffee machine in a warzone.

A drill without fuel is just an expensive metal sculpture. Building the drill itself even pays a small amount of cash per hammer hit, so the construction phase is not pure cost. Still, the ongoing supply chain is what separates teams that pull the zone once from teams that control it for most of the match.

That is the full picture. Plant the FOB in a smart location, wall it like you expect the apocalypse, prioritize the Vanguard Ciws and mortar before the drill, keep the fuel coming, concentrate bodies in the Hot Zone and accept that the other teams will throw everything they own at you. The chaos is not a side effect. It is proof the strategy is working.
