All RDR2 Mask Locations Guide: How Do They Work?

There are nine masks in RDR2, five of which you can buy from Fences and the remaining four you have to find out in the world. They don’t just serve cosmetic purposes, but they’re also a solid choice if you want to commit a crime without getting a bounty on your head.

Let’s take a look at these masks and see how to find the other four masks. At the end, I’ll teach you a thing or two about how to do a robbery with masks and remain unidentified by the police.

Where to Buy All Owned Masks

You can buy five masks from any Fence in the game: Psycho Mask, Metal Skull Mask, Cloth Mask, Canvas Sack Hood, and Executioner Hood. If you want to know how they would look on Arthur/John to make the ladies go crazy and wild, I got you covered.

All Hidden Mask Locations in Red Dead Redemption 2

Unlike the plethora of hats in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can only find four masks out in the wild (excluding the other five you can buy, of course). Once you’ve found them, they are saved under the Masks – Found Masks section in the game. You can select which masks to save on your horse from there.

Pagan Skull Mask

Located far west of Strawberry, just northwest of Lake Owanjila. You’ll find it on a very dead corpse at the Pagan Ritual point of interest, right below the map’s obelisk.

Pig Mask

Found right in the middle of Butcher Creek, hanging on the northeast corner post of a butcher stand and slaughterhouse shed.

Cat Skull Mask

Head to Lakay, a camp hideout in the Bayou Nwa area of Lemoyne. It’s hanging on the northern wall of a half-sunken, collapsed shack on the east side.

Ram Skull Mask

Travel to Rathskeller Fork in New Austin. Look for a wooden pergola in the northeast corner.

How Masks Work in RDR2

Now to the fun part of the story. If you put on a mask before you approach to do a robbery, your identity stays hidden from regular people. If any witness sees you wearing a mask, they don’t personally identify you, but you’re reported as an “Unidentified Assailant.”

Can Police Recognize You With a Mask On?

Lawmen identify you even if you have your mask on. Masks only protect you from civilians, not from the law, which is quite ironic. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing and it doesn’t affect whether people identify you. It’s just the way the game works.

I found out the hard way. In my first playthrough, whenever I tried to commit a not-so-cool act, my cover would get blown right away. This was hard to avoid, especially in Saint Denis, near the tailor shop where a loud, never-ending 24/7 chanting voice got permanently interrupted. Don’t ask.

If you do want to commit crimes without getting a bounty on your head, there are a couple of steps you need to take. First things first, put your mask on before you get close to your target. Once you get there, don’t go guns blazing.

Try to do the crime quietly so you don’t attract witnesses or lawmen. It helps to walk next to shopkeepers before you pull out your weapon. When you do your unspeakable thing, leave the area ASAP and stay away from law enforcement while you’re trying to escape. If, for any reason, lawmen have started to look for you, take that mask off once they have stopped searching for you.

Bandanas vs. Masks: What’s the Difference?

Masks and bandanas work pretty much the same. The only real difference is how they look. Neither one will completely stop you from getting a bounty if you hang around the crime scene too long. People start to get suspicious and eventually the law comes looking for you. Again, keep in mind that lawmen will always recognize you right away, no matter if you’re wearing a mask or a bandana.

Jason’s journey of countless memorable video game stories began when he was only 8 years old. Most of the time, he would play Mortal Kombat 4 on his PC after school. When night fell, it was time for the original Resident Evil 3 to scare the living daylights out of him. But he wouldn’t trade those good old days for anything. Jason is a minimalist at heart and that translates into his guide writing as well. He likes to break down gameplay mechanics into simpler parts so that the audience can find what they’re looking for in no time.
