Welcome to Elderfield Basic Pickaxe: Where to Buy It

The Welcome to Elderfield Basic Pickaxe is a mining tool (level 2). You can buy it from the Mall Rat inside the Mall Mines for 150g. You don’t get it by upgrading your Rusty Pickaxe; it’s a separate tool.
In This Guide:
Quick Guide to Get Basic Pickaxe in Welcome to Elderfield
- Go to the Mall food court
- Enter the Mall Mines
- Find the Mall Rat just inside the entrance
- Buy the Basic Pickaxe for 150g
How to Get the Welcome to Elderfield Basic Pickaxe
Your first pickaxe is the Rusty Pickaxe (level 1), which Molly gives you during the Helping Molly task. It works fine in the Beginner Mines near the Workshop, but it won’t take you much further.
When you are ready for better ore, head to the Mall food court and enter the Mall Mines. The Mall Rat stands just inside the mines. Talk to him and buy the Basic Pickaxe for 150g.

Why Can’t I Upgrade My Rusty Pickaxe?
For most players, this is the most confusing part. When you hit rocks in the Mall Mines with the Rusty Pickaxe, the game tells you that you need a better pickaxe. Many players take this as a sign to collect more ore and upgrade the tool they already have.
That doesn’t work. but the fix is simple: you don’t need to upgrade anything. Just buy the Basic Pickaxe from the Mall Rat.
The same mistake happens with axes. Some players buy a whetstone, hoping to turn the Rusty Axe into a Basic Axe. That doesn’t work either. The Basic Axe is a task reward, and you can learn how to get it in our Welcome to Elderfield Basic Axe guide.
Basic Pickaxe in Welcome to Elderfield: What Is It Used for?
Each type of ore needs a pickaxe of a certain level, and the Basic Pickaxe breaks rocks the Rusty Pickaxe can’t.
You will need it for The Skull Chalice task. Most of the ores for this task are not in the Beginner Mines, so you have to mine them in the Mall Mines instead.

It isn’t the last pickaxe you will need, though. Some rocks later on need a stronger tool.
Don’t Sell It: Sturdy Pickaxe Recipe
Hold on to both of your old pickaxes. The next upgrade, the Sturdy Pickaxe (level 3), needs both of them. Here is the recipe:
- 1 Rusty Pickaxe
- 1 Basic Pickaxe
- 8 Copper Bars
- 6 Iron Bars
After that, the Sturdy Pickaxe can be turned into the Quality Pickaxe (level 4), and then the Superior Pickaxe (level 5).
Tip: The Mall Rat does more than sell tools. He also opens the Sealed Passage, which starts the chain of tasks for the Elder Gem.
