Sandustry Lava Guide: How to Move & Store Lava

Lava in Sandustry is one of the most annoying resources at first. It spreads, burns everything underneath and refuses to sit on belts. But once you learn the Cinder process, it becomes a reliable (but consumable) heat source and a clean way to make steam.
Dump snow or ice on the lava, turn it into Scoria, Destroy the Scoria with any tool or weapon to make Cinder. Move the Cinder and you’re actually moving lava. The Only Way to Move Lava in Sandustry
Here is the method to move it, explaining with more details: raw lava will not sit on belts or most transport systems. So moving it properly was one of my own concerns too. The consistent method I know you can move lava with is:
- Dump a good amount of snow or ice on the lava pool (Cryoblaster works perfectly for this).

- The lava freezes into Scoria.

- Destroy the Scoria with any weapon, rocket, shovel or tool. It breaks into Cinder.

- Cinder is solid and travels cleanly on belts, launchers, vacuum, grabber, drones or any other solid transport.
When you need lava again, drop the Cinder into a chamber and hit it with the Flamethrower. As I know, only the direct flame of the Flamethrower converts Cinder back into lava. Passive heat sources (thermal buffers, pyro dispensers, etc.) will not do this.
You can freeze flowing or dripping lava the same way, keep adding snow until it solidifies. Vacuum or grabber works well for collecting Cinder after you break the Scoria. I personally store Cinder in tanks or chambers so I can haul large loads back to base when needed.
Finding Lava in Sandustry
Lava appears as glowing, beautiful orange pools once you dig deeper into the caves. You’ll find it under ice layers, behind shatter stone or in open chambers. Deeper areas generally have larger deposits, though map generation varies.
When you open a new cave and see the glow, stop and plan. Lava pours and spreads the instant you break the wall, often flooding belts or water systems. Keep a Cryoblaster and snow ready so you can freeze it quickly if it starts spreading.
Lava is also useful for melting ice during exploration and can help open paths through thick ice sections.
How to Store Lava
Build proper containment early. A solid-walled chamber works, but the most practical early approach is a shared setup that holds Cinder and converts it to lava on demand.
Key practical tips:
- Use filters on top so random sand or residue cannot fall in.
- Leave extra height and add launchers or belts so you can pull material out cleanly.
- Seal the sides carefully. One missing pixel and lava will drip into places you do not want it.
- Keep a visible stockpile of Cinder. Heat systems slowly consume lava, so you will need to top up regularly.
Later you can separate pure lava tanks and pure Cinder tanks if your factory grows large, but a shared chamber carries most players for a long time.
What You Actually Use Lava For
Lava provides heat and burning power, but it is consumable. Systems that draw heat will gradually use it up.
Burning Systems
Rising lava flames (the bubbles that appear above the surface) ignite residue, slag, seeds and flowers.
You can place lava under planter boxes or burner lines, so the flames do the work as materials pass over. This is cleaner than constantly running manual flamethrowers, but the lava itself still depletes over time and needs topping up with Cinder.

Thermal Buffers
Thermal buffers store and distribute heat. They can be charged by the Flamethrower or by consuming adjacent lava (or snow).
Buffers that sit directly in or on lava heat up and consume the lava. Buffers placed above a lava pool can be heated by the rising flames. Wide, shallow pools tend to give better flame coverage for heating than deep narrow ones.
Steam and Water
Drop water or snow onto lava and you instantly get steam. The amount of lava does not decrease from this reaction. Guide the steam into tanks or condensers with walls and filters. Uncontrolled steam will rise and flood random areas.
Smelting
Copper and later materials smelt when placed on a thermal buffer (or near lava) that is kept hot. Many players build a small lava chamber next to or under their smelter line.
Other Uses
Lava is useful for melting ice during exploration. Some puzzle solutions and mechanisms also involve moving or containing lava. It serves as a constant low-level heat source for any system that needs to stay warm, provided you keep the supply topped up.
Making It Semi-Automated

You do not need a perfect infinite system right away. A working setup looks like this:
- Bring Cinder in on a belt.
- Use an advanced filter that only allows Cinder through (block everything else, especially snow).
- Drop the Cinder into a small conversion chamber.
- Use the Flamethrower (manually or with careful positioning) to turn it into lava when heat is needed.
- Let the rising flames do the actual burning work under planters or burner lines.
- Add filter layers that contain the lava while still allowing other materials to pass if required.
Keep an eye on heat levels. Even well-built setups slowly consume the lava, so you will still need to top up with Cinder from time to time. Oh, and note that there is no vanilla “endless lava” building in normal gameplay. Any true infinite source you heard about, come from mods.
Later tools such as advanced filters (that can handle liquids and gases) and clearing frames help keep materials moving cleanly around lava chambers without clogging.
Screw-ups with Sandustry Lava
These are the mistakes in my first runs. I list them here and I hope they’d be helpful:
- One missing wall pixel and lava rains into your main factory. Always double-check containment.
- Snow mixed with water turns into ice and clogs belts or tanks. Filter snow out early.
- Making the lava pool too deep instead of wide. Surface area matters more for useful flames.
- Forgetting to keep a Cinder buffer. Your heat chain goes cold mid-production.
- Trying to pipe or belt raw lava. It does not work. Stick to the Cinder method.
- Letting steam rise freely. It condenses and floods random areas. Guide it with walls and vents.
- Overloading a small chamber. Too much Cinder at once makes conversion messy.
- Relying only on rising flame bubbles for long-term sustainability. They help, but the lava still depletes and must be replenished.
Once the Cinder loop is solid and you treat lava as a consumable heat source that needs regular top-ups, it stops being a constant headache and becomes a useful part of the factory.
