Rift of Beginnings Shape of Dreams Explained: New Update

The Rift of Beginnings is one of the most confusing choices you’ll hit near the end of a Shape of Dreams run. The name screams reset button or start over buddy, but it actually does almost the opposite. It’s the standard ending route that takes you toward Primus, the First Dreamer. If you’d rather keep your current run alive and keep stacking power instead, grab the other portal that leads deeper into the dream.

One big heads-up after the September 17, 2026 update: Rift of Beginnings is no longer the only way out. The v1.4 Starless Path update added a whole separate ending unlocked through The Way of Stars. So, the endgame got a second door.

What Even is the Rift of Beginnings

It’s basically the gateway to the original, standard endgame path.

Once you’ve pushed far enough and knocked over the required bosses, you get a choice: Rift of Beginnings, or the portal that lets you keep going deeper.

A lot of players get tripped up here because Beginnings feels like it should restart the loop. The naming is just trolling you. Rift of Beginnings refers to Primus and the standard ending.

The other portal lets you continue the run and loop some more.

When You Walk in

You don’t get dropped straight into Primus’s face. First you land in a special prep area, your last chance to mess with your build before the big fight.

People use this space to buy and rearrange Memories and Essences, heal up and dump remaining Dream Dust.

Treat it like the final are you sure you’re ready screen. Spend the Dream Dust. There’s almost zero value in carrying a fat stack of it into a fight that can end the whole run.

Who’s Waiting at the End

Primus. The guy is tightly woven into the game’s central lore.

The opening narration tells you Primus was the first person to ever dream. Inside the dreams he became the first god, and the barrier between dreams and reality went cracked. That’s why the name Rift of Beginnings actually makes thematic sense. It’s not about starting a new cycle, it’s about going back to the beginning of dreaming itself.

When the fight starts, the titles drop: Master of Dreams and The First to Dream. Matches the lore perfectly.

Is Primus the Final Boss

For the standard route? Yes. Rift of Beginnings leads to him as the final boss.

But here’s the 2026 asterisk. The Starless Path v1.4 update (September 17) added:

  • The Way of Stars progression system
  • A new ending called The Starless Path
  • A new adventure tied to it
  • An even stronger final boss

So Primus is still the boss of the Rift route. He’s just no longer the only possible final boss and the game no longer has only one ending.

Rift of Beginnings or Go Deeper

This is the question most people actually need answered.

Pick Rift of Beginnings if you’re ready to finish the standard route, fight Primus and go for that ending.

Pick the other portal if you want more areas, more Memories and Essences, more upgrades and a stronger build before you eventually circle back to the endgame choice.

What if you skip the Rift

Your run doesn’t end. You just keep going deeper into another cycle, which lets your build get juicier before you get another shot at finishing. Handy if your Memory combo still feels half-baked.

But looping isn’t free power. Primus (and other bosses) scale up as you push through extra cycles. So yes, you get stronger. The enemies and Primus get stronger too.

Some folks prefer smacking Primus in the first cycle. Others loop when they’re chasing a specific broken combination or just want more toys. Don’t assume another loop automatically makes the fight easier.

How Hard is the Primus Fight

Noticeably more involved than a regular world boss. He has multiple health bars and he changes attack patterns as the fight goes on.

Surviving the Fireball Nonsense

This is the mechanic that keeps showing up as the biggest run-ender: Primus’s fireball sequence.

He calls down meteors that explode into expanding groups or rings of projectiles. Sometimes he’s invulnerable during parts of it, so just DPS harder isn’t always an option.

Move away from the impact point before the projectiles spread. Distance makes the gaps between the expanding fireballs bigger and easier to slip through.

Aim for the opposite side of the arena from the landing spot, then weave through the gaps. Dashes, i-frames, teleports, and other mobility Memories help a lot. Don’t panic-dump every dodge early, save mobility for the scary projectile patterns.

What Should You Prep Before Entering

There’s no single mandatory Primus build, Shape of Dreams loves letting you make absurd Memory sandwiches.

But I like to highlight a few useful habits:

  • Sustain is your friend (healing, barriers, healing-on-hit, etc.).
  • Keep mobility available. Dashes or movement tools shine during the meteor sequences.
  • Don’t go full glass-cannon. A build that melts normal bosses can still fold if it can’t survive one of Primus’s nastier patterns.
  • Use the prep room. Spend the Dream Dust, check Jonas, rearrange Essences, heal, hit the Altar of Transcendence. The Rift gives you this setup for a reason.

Does Entering the Rift End Your Run

Yes, treat it as committing to the standard ending sequence. You go from the prep area straight into the Primus fight instead of back into normal progression. Treat choosing the Rift as the moment you stop looping and try to finish. Finish your exploring and build decisions before you step through.
