Birb Guide: Evolution Requirements and Expedition Tips

This Birb guide covers the whole progression path, from your first Popcorn to the Expedition floors. The short answer is: eat Popcorn, Rebirb to turn it into Golden Feathers, buy Sunflower Vending for 100 Golden Feathers, then save 100M Popcorn for Unlocks Evolve. Every Evolution after that opens a new system, like fishing at Evolution I or the Birb Nest at Evolution III.

You start as a very slow pigeon in the Meadow and the game explains almost nothing. I’ve put everything below in the order you’ll run into it, so skip ahead if you’re already past the early game.

Birb Progression Order and Evolution Requirements

Here is every major unlock in order, with what it costs. The costs for Evolution II to V were last changed in the August 23 patch.

Unlocks Evolve100M PopcornYour first Evolution and the Bridge

Evolution IV1Qa Popcorn + 100K Twigs + 10K MonetaDesert and Parrot Rebirb I
Evolution V1Qi Popcorn, plus TwigsAquarium and Lineage Lake

Evolution V is the first real wall for a lot of players. The Popcorn cost jumps hard and your Sparrows are what carry you there, so read the Sparrow section before you start that grind.

Birb Controls and Movement Modes

  • WASD moves your birb.
  • C cycles the movement mode from WASD to mouse-follow, then to click-to-move. If your birb stops answering the keyboard, press C once or twice.
  • Q opens your objectives. They point at the next upgrade worth saving for.
  • TAB opens the Companions panel.
  • SHIFT (hold) shows enemy stats in Expedition. You can also hover over an enemy with the mouse.

Auto collect unlocks almost right away and sends your birb after Popcorn by itself. Turn it on with the AUTO button whenever you step away.

Popcorn Upgrades: What to Buy First

Popcorn pays for four basic upgrades in the Meadow. All four reset every time you Rebirb.

UpgradeEffectLimit
Popcorn Value+1 base value per level999 levels
Faster PopcornSpawn time drops from 2.4s to 0.2s12 levels
Popcorn Cap+2 Popcorn on screen per level40 levels
Wing TrainingFaster movement20 levels

Popcorn Value is where most of your Popcorn should go. Faster Popcorn is cheap and done after 12 levels, so I max it early in every run. The pigeon is painfully slow, so Wing Training is tempting. Its price climbs fast though, and I stop once one level costs more than several levels of Popcorn Value.

Some Popcorn is worth more. Light gold pieces pay 2x and the dark gold ones pay 10x, so go for those first when you collect by hand.

When to Rebirb

Rebirb trades your Popcorn for Golden Feathers at 1000 Popcorn per feather. It also wipes your Popcorn upgrades, which stings the first time. You earn them back far quicker on the next run.

Golden Feathers buy three upgrades in the Rebirb panel, and those survive a Rebirb. Popcorn Mult multiplies all Popcorn value and is the one to buy first. It goes up to level 7, and each level doubles your Popcorn value. The opening levels cost 1, 3, 12 and 42 Golden Feathers. Magnetic Field widens your pickup radius, starting with 1.2x for 4 Golden Feathers. Respawn Mult speeds up Popcorn respawn, and its first level is 1.5x for 10.

In my opinion, Rebirb when your feathers will pay for the next Popcorn Mult level. Once it sits at 16x, save up 100 Golden Feathers for Sunflower Vending.

Sunflower Field and Seeds

Sunflower Vending costs 100 Golden Feathers and opens the Sunflower Platform. This is a second upgrade tree where some nodes cost Seeds and others cost Popcorn or Golden Feathers.

At first you only make Seeds while your birb sits on the platform, and that keeps you away from the Popcorn. Auto Generator fixes this, so treat it as your first goal here.

The Seeds panel also has two repeatable multipliers, Multiply Popcorn Gain and Multiply Feather Gain. Put spare Seeds into both, because the feather one raises what every Rebirb pays.

One small thing, the bees that fly over the field can be clicked for 1 to 3 minutes of seed income.

What Resets When You Evolve

Once you own Unlocks Evolve, you feed your birb the cost from the first table to Evolve. An Evolution is a bigger reset than a Rebirb, so check what you lose first.

An Evolution resets your Moneta, fish inventory, Twig progress and temporary upgrades. It keeps your rods, Fishdex, Fishing level, Parrot progress and Nest tier.

Sparrow progress and Lineage Lake hybrids carry over too. Moneta gets wiped, so spend it on fishing upgrades before you Evolve.

Birb Companions

Companions automate one job each. You open their panels with TAB.

Sparrow Mitosis and Resonance

Sparrows gain XP from the Popcorn they collect and from Seeds you feed them. Mitosis spends that XP to double your flock: 500k XP for 2 Sparrows, 1M for 4, 2M for 8 and 4M for 16.

With 16 Sparrows and 16M XP you can Rebirb the flock. You go back to one Sparrow, but Sparrow XP comes faster and Popcorn respawns quicker. The respawn bonus caps at x10 and it also works on Desert popcorn, so keep going until you hit that cap.

Resonance is the other use for Sparrow XP. Press the green button in the Sparrow menu to drain XP into a permanent multiplier on Popcorn and Seeds. The first steps are cheap and the later ones are not.

Seagull Doctrines

Each Seagull fishes under one of three Doctrines.

DoctrineTrade-offUse it for
BalancedNo penaltyFishdex progress and Shiny fish
Hunter1.3x slower, better odds on rare fishHigh-rarity and heavy fish
Training1.45x XP, can downgrade rare catchesSeagull levels, on the Bridge

A Seagull can Rebirb every 25 levels. Three Rebirbs unlock a second Seagull, and 5 turn on Sparrow Share, which passes Seagull XP to your Sparrows. At 10 Rebirbs the level cap goes from 50 to 100.

How Fishing Works in Birb

You can fish from the Bridge once you reach Evolution I. Every cast lands a fish and pays Moneta, and auto fishing turns on after 10 manual catches.

Rods unlock in order and you cannot skip one. Each locked rod asks for specific fish, and better rods pay more Moneta per catch (from 1 up to 30). A rod cannot catch fish two tiers above it, while fish one tier above are possible at a 0.15x chance. Bait guarantees the fish type printed on it.

To use a fish, open your collection and press FEED. Your birb eats it and gets its buff. A normal buff stays until you replace it, and a Shiny buff is stronger but falls back to the normal version after 24 or 36 hours. You start with one buff slot and can unlock two more.

Safe Sell never sells locked or Shiny fish, and it also keeps anything a rod or contract still needs. You need the Fish Seeds upgrade before you can sell, and sold fish pay Seeds.

Aquarium and Shiny Fish

The Aquarium opens at Evolution V and you enter it from the Bridge. Fish you donate there earn species points toward Resonance milestones. Always donate a Shiny. It counts double, and it raises your Shiny catch chance based on your record weight for that species.

Two milestones matter most. 600 Resonance opens Lineage Lake, and 700 points opens the Fish Market through the purple portal inside the Aquarium.

Shiny fish are rare and there is no trick to them early on. More catches means more chances, so level your Seagulls and leave them on the Bridge.

Lineage Lake and Hybrid Fish

Lineage Lake lets you breed two fish into a hybrid that carries their buffs. You need Evolution V and 600 Aquarium Resonance first. After that, buy the Breeding Lake in the Nest for 1M Twigs.

Both parents are consumed. You pay Moneta for each parent based on its rarity, and the wait depends on the rarity of the hybrid that comes out.

RarityMoneta per parentIncubationLineage points
Common25,0005 minutes10
Uncommon50,00015 minutes20
Rare100,00045 minutes35
Epic250,0001.5 hours50
Legendary500,0004.5 hours100

Mythic parents cost 1,000,000 Moneta each.

  • You can hold 2 hybrids and keep one active. The active buff has no timer.
  • Fish with your birb to cut the wait. Any fish removes 1 second, a fish from the same biome removes 2, the same species removes 5, and a Shiny cuts 40%. Seagull catches do not count.
  • A hybrid has a 0.5% chance to be Shiny. One Shiny parent raises that to 5%, and two raise it to 10%.
  • Breed the same pair again and FUSE the result into your saved hybrid. That adds the Lineage points from the table, and at 100 the hybrid moves up one rarity.
  • Hatchery Nursery is a Nest upgrade that cuts incubation by 25%.

The best hybrid right now is two copies of your strongest Skill Points fish. Rarer parents give better rarity odds, and the base fish decide how big the bonus is.

Birb Nest and Twigs

The Birb Nest opens at Evolution III. You peck the trees outside for Twigs, and the Red Panda collects them for you and banks gains while you are offline.

Tier I needs 100K Twigs and Tier II needs 1M. Tier II is the one to rush because it opens Expedition. Tier III asks for 100M, and Tier IV stays locked until Evolution VI.

You can swap the slow wild trees for Growing Boxes, and each box upgrades to hold up to 4 trees. The Nest shop also sells four production buildings:

BuildingEffect
Cornfield2x Popcorn respawn speed
Sunflower Field2x Seed production speed
Irrigation Well2x Twig gains, plus Popcorn and Seeds
Grain SiloYour Twig count boosts Popcorn and Seeds

An Evolution wipes your Twig progress but keeps the Nest tier you finished.

Expedition and the Parrot

Expedition opens when you finish Nest Tier II. Your first visit to the Expedition Hub gives you the Parrot, and the Parrot does all the fighting from then on.

Parrot Stats and Gear

Enemies drop Skill Points (SP), and every point adds 1 to a stat. Vitality is max HP and Strength is damage. Recovery, the third stat, is HP regen per second.

Gear multiplies those stats. Feather Punch scales Strength and Feather Armor scales Vitality. Parrot Aura covers Recovery. All of it starts at a 0.1x multiplier, which is why the Parrot feels so weak at first. You upgrade gear in the FORGE with Spirit Aura.

The Forge opens after Sacrifice Milestone I (450 Skill Points) and 10 Common Aura. Sacrifice Milestones are bought with SP in the Sacrifice Room and give permanent bonuses.

Regular enemies drop Spirit Aura. Elites and bosses each drop one Artifact Chest, and you open chests from the Parrot menu under EQUIPMENT, then CHESTS. Artifacts with bonus damage or SP gain are the ones to equip first.

How to Spend Skill Points

  • Early on, buy enough Vitality and Recovery to stay alive, then put the rest in Strength.
  • Try to one-shot the enemies you farm. A second hit halves your SP rate and gives them time to hit back.
  • Respec often, since it is cheap. If more Strength will not one-shot the next tier, move those points into Vitality for now.
  • After Emergency Flask, go heavy on Strength. A split near 1:0:4 (Vitality:Recovery:Strength) is common, and Floors 7 and 9 want something closer to 1:0:2.

Vitality beats Recovery point for point once you have potions, because potions heal a percentage of your max HP.

Enemy Tiers

Every floor has five bands of enemies, called tiers. T1 stands next to the portal and T5 holds the boss. The elites sit in T3. Higher tiers pay more SP, and you can hold SHIFT over an enemy to see its tier and stats.

The Parrot panel has a gear icon next to its close button. Click it and turn on Aggro Radius to see how far the auto Parrot will go to attack.

  • Floor 1: the secret room is the entrance to the Mine.
  • Floor 2: the Witch attacks from range. Bring enough Vitality to survive about three hits. She drops the Legendary Key for the Desert.
  • Floor 3: a trio of elites here is a good early farm for Artifact Chests.
  • Floors 7 and 9: flies and fireballs hit much harder than earlier enemies, so shift points into Vitality.
  • Floor 9: if the boss keeps killing you, farm the enemies near it from just outside its activation range.

Stuck on a Floor?

Run through this list before you grind more SP.

  • Max your body gear in the FORGE.
  • Eat Skill Points fish. The Leviathans are the strongest, and you catch them on Expedition floors: Gladewarden Leviathan (Floor 1), Twilight Leviathan (Floor 2), Deepsong Leviathan (Floor 4) and Borealis Leviathan (Floor 6).
  • Get Emergency Flask and Muad’Birb from the Desert tree.
  • Farm elites and bosses you can already beat for Artifact Chests.

If all of that is done, the answer really is more SP. Park the Parrot on the highest tier it can one-shot and let it run.

Desert and Golden Popcorn

The Desert sits above the Meadow and the Sunflower Field. It needs Evolution IV, and the Legendary Key from the Floor 2 boss opens its upgrade tree for good.

Golden Popcorn spawns in the Desert and pays for that tree. Two of its upgrades decide how fast you move through Expedition:

  • Emergency Flask drinks potions for you. Set the thresholds on your equipment page.
  • Muad’Birb multiplies your SP gains based on how much Golden Popcorn you hold. Aim for the soft cap of 20x at 53B Golden Popcorn. Past that, every extra 5x costs about 10 times more. The developer’s own tip is to unlock it during Evolution V.

Dave is the Desert companion and collects Golden Popcorn while you do other things. He was reworked on September 26 around 100 Rebirbs and assignable instinct points, and I’ll add a build here once the new numbers settle.

Your Sparrows cannot enter the Desert. Their respawn bonus still applies to Desert popcorn, which is one more reason to push it to x10.

Mine and Crow

The Mine is a late-game area behind the secret room on Floor 1. You can enter after Parrot Rebirb II, once all three pieces of Parrot gear are maxed. The Forge shows a message when you qualify. Go back to Floor 1 and break the wooden bars.

You mine Brute Ore there, and it refines into Ore Bars. An ore counter runs along the bottom of the screen, and when it fills you can trigger a Mine Collapse for Deep Cores. The counter tracks ore mined, not ore held, so keep buying upgrades while it fills.

The Crow only mines rocks you click until you buy Crow Contract, which shows up after the first collapse. He levels twice as fast when you mine with him.

Ore Bars also feed Metalworking, found behind the plus button in the Parrot Forge. Core Edge raises Parrot damage and Armor Plating raises HP. Aura Rivets handles regen. Each Reinforce costs Legendary Aura, so watch your reserves. The September 26 patch added deeper areas and timed Giant Ore challenges, and I’ll expand this section as that content gets mapped out.

Steam vs Web Version and Saves

Birb on Steam and the free browser version get the same updates at the same time. If you already played in the browser, click your profile on the start screen. From there you can import your save or link your web account.

Back up your save regularly. The game is still in active development, and a browser can wipe site data without warning.

This guide is actively being worked on. It was checked against the October 2, 2026 patch, and Birb gets updates almost every week, so some numbers may change. Check back later as more sections are expanded.
