Town Gratitude acts as fuel for the sermon progression and represents the town’s support. Unlike Faith, you collect gratitude before holding a sermon. In fact, Town Gratitude helps determine how much value you can get from those sermons.
The gameplay loop looks like this:
Earn Town Gratitude > Hold a Sermon > Receive Faith > Unlock More Progression

How to Get Town Gratitude in Graveyard Keeper 2
There are several ways to increase your Town Gratitude:
Complete Quests
Quest progression is one of the main ways to earn Town Gratitude. Some quests provide gratitude-related rewards. Therefore, completing town objectives is important if you want to improve your sermon results.
Keep these rewards instead of using them immediately if you are saving for an important sermon.
Trade Items
If you are not in the mood for quests, trading with certain NPCs is another way to gain Town Gratitude. I use some items like Burial Certificates, fish fillets, and vegetables.
I sell my Burial Certificates to Januarius at the tavern and take fish fillets and vegetables to Herm. Both are steady sources of Town Gratitude each week.
Beware, these methods have limits. You cannot endlessly farm the same source without restriction. Januarius only lets you convert Burial Certificates into Gratitude up to 5 points per week. Therefore, certificates alone will not fill your cap.
You will need quests or the Herm trading loop to cover the rest.
Use Town Gratitude Efficiently
The best time for using Town Gratitude is when you are preparing for a sermon that matters. A good routine is like this:
- Collect Town Gratitude through the week
- Improve your church as you can
- Prepare before sermon day
- Use your available gratitude to maximize your Faith gains
Avoid spending it randomly, especially if you do not currently need the sermon reward.

Can You Farm Town Gratitude Quickly?
Yes. There’s a trading loop through Herm that fills your entire weekly Town Gratitude in one trip, and it barely costs you anything. Here’s the route:
- Head to Herm’s shop on the Day of Wrath.
- Buy exactly 5 River Fish Fillets, 30 Wheat, 30 Carrots, 30 Beets, and 30 Cabbages. This runs about 7 silver 53 copper.
- Without closing the trade window, sell all of it straight back to Herm. You’ll get roughly 5 silver 27 copper back.
- Net cost: around 2 silver 26 copper. You walk away with the full 10 Town Gratitude for the week.
Pair this with your Januarius certificate sales and quest rewards, and you’ll rarely be short before Sermon day. Keep in mind trader prices shift slightly with your reputation and current stock, so treat these numbers as a solid ballpark rather than a fixed price. But the loop itself has held up consistently.
Keep in mind that 10 is only your starting weekly cap. Once you complete the main questline battle to retake the town from the undead (through Herbert), your Town Gratitude cap doubles to 20. So do not be surprised if the Herm loop stops covering your full weekly total later in the game.
At that point, pair it with quest rewards and Januarius sales to fill the higher cap.
Town Gratitude and Sermons Explained
Town Gratitude works together with your church improvements.
Having a better church does not automatically solve everything. If your Town Gratitude is low, your sermon potential is still limited. Likewise, having plenty of gratitude will not fully help if your church quality is behind.
For the best results, improve both systems together.
