NMS Pathogen Sac: Where to Find It and What It’s Used For

The Pathogen Sac is one of the most valuable things you can pull out of deep space right now. They come from Infested Outposts, you need a Gravitino Coil to dig one out of the goop, and you need a Corvette with a Tractor Beam to carry it home. It sells for a lot, and it has exactly one crafting use.

What Is a Pathogen Sac in No Man’s Sky?

The Pathogen Sac is a rare Curiosity added in the Cosmos 7.0 update. The game describes it as a glutinous fleshy lump harvested from a deep-space biohazard, and it has already been processed at a deep-space outpost and can be sold on the open market.

Item typeCuriosity, rare
Added inCosmos (7.0)
SourceInfested Outposts in deep space
Base valueAround 201,000 units
Stack size5
LegalityLegal, sells anywhere
Crafting useInfested Nodule

Note: the 201,000 figure comes from the game files and it is a base value, not a sale price. What a terminal actually pays you depends on the system economy and how saturated the market already is. Sell all five at once and you will watch the price drop with each one.

Where to Find the NMS Pathogen Sac

Pathogen Sacs only show up at Infested Outposts, the deep-space outposts that have been swallowed by a spreading biological goop. They are not derelict freighters and they are not hulks, so the old Emergency Signal Scanner routine does nothing for you here.

You find them with the Star System Map in the Quick Menu. Deep-space points of interest only start appearing once your save has visited the Space Anomaly at least once, and a short tutorial mission called Signals walks you through the map if you have not used it yet. The same map now lists every other deep-space target in the system, including the star itself, which you can finally fly to.

Before you set off, check two things:

  • The Gravitino Coil is installed on your Multi-Tool. It is Remnant tech, not a Cosmos item, and you unlock it at the Space Anomaly.
  • Your Corvette has a Tractor Beam fitted from the Corvette Workshop.

Without the Coil you cannot reach the sample. Without the Tractor Beam you can free it and then just watch it drift, because you have no way to pick it up.

How to Get a Pathogen Sac Step by Step

  1. Mark the Infested Outpost on the Star System Map and fly out to it in your Corvette.
  2. Eject and spacewalk. You do not dock here, you float around the structure.
  3. Open your Analysis Visor and look for the sample markers through the mass.
  4. Use the Gravitino Coil to strip the viral mass away. This is a Biohazard Cleanup Operation, and it is mostly a patience job.
  5. Check the biological masses floating outside the main building too. Players hunting the Viral Heart report finding samples away from the central tunnel, and the sacs sit in the same kind of growths.
  6. Once the sac is exposed, throw it at your Corvette with the Coil. The Tractor Beam catches it and stores it in the hold.
  7. Fly to a normal deep-space outpost, process the load, then sell it. Since the 7.01 hotfix there is a Galactic Trade Terminal right in the Quartermaster’s room, so you no longer have to fly back to a station to cash out.

What Is the Pathogen Sac Used For?

Two things, and one of them is just money.

You’ll need Pathogen Sac for Infested Nodule recipe, a free-floating decoration you can hang around an orbital base or your own station exterior. It costs 1 Pathogen Sac and 60 Gelatinous Fibres.

Everything else is selling. A rare Curiosity worth six figures is one of the fastest units-per-minute items in Cosmos, and the sacs stack to five. Spread them across a few terminals instead of dumping the stack in one place.

Worth knowing: the Viral Heart is the sibling item from the same outposts, and it is the one that actually gates progress, since you need it for the Deep-Space Base Computer. If you are building in orbit, grab hearts first and treat sacs as the payday. If you already run a space station of your own, the nodules are a decent way to make the exterior look properly cursed.

Is Farming Pathogen Sacs Worth It?

Depends what you need.

For pure units, yes. An infested outpost has no meltdown timer, nothing shoots at you, and a full stack of five sacs is worth more than most cargo runs. Compare that to a derelict hulk, where structural integrity can fail and end your looting early.

For progress, not really. Hulks feed the salvage contract chain that leads to station directorship, and they drop the auxiliary cores, stasis lockers and fuel rods those contracts ask for. Infested outposts mostly give you biological samples and one decoration recipe.

My honest take is to treat them as two different jobs. Run hulks when you want standing and contracts, and swing by an infested outpost when you want cash. Doing both in one trip is fine too, since the Corvette hold does not care what kind of junk you loaded.
