How to Fish Game Radar: Where to Buy and Find It Again

The radar is a $10 item you buy from the Lighthouse Keeper before you ever leave the starting island. It does two things at once. It points you toward the next island, and it puts a dot on any big creature nearby so you actually know what you are dealing with. I did not realize how much I relied on mine until I lost it and suddenly had no idea which direction anything was.
It is also a handheld item at first, which means it takes up your hands. You cannot hold a gun or a fishing rod while it is out, so switching between navigating and fighting gets old fast.
What this guide cover:
What Does the Radar Do in How to Fish?
Two jobs, and neither one is optional once you leave the first island. Coordinates you pick up from NPCs get added to the radar automatically, and a colored dot points you toward wherever you are supposed to go next. Separately, it lights up big creatures in the water before you can even see them, which matters more than it sounds. I had one boss fight where my group could not land a hit until someone pulled the radar out and found the dot first.

Where to Buy the Radar
The Lighthouse Keeper sells the first one for $10, and you will have that much before you even finish the opening quest. Buy it early. There is no reason to wait, and every later shop sells one too, so this is not a purchase you have to protect carefully.

If you are still working out how to get through the opening islands, our full How to Fish guide covers the early quests step by step.
How to Fix a Lost Radar
This is the part people search for. Dynamite is the usual culprit. Throw it near your boat and the blast can knock the radar clean overboard along with anything else sitting loose. Dying does it too, and a couple of players I saw mentioned losing theirs after reloading a save.
Every island sells one. You are never stuck.
Finding it in the shop is the annoying part. It is not always sitting out in the open.
- On some islands it is tucked under a directional sign, easy to miss if you are only scanning the counter
- On others it is leaning against a shop post, half hidden by a tree
If you do not see it right away, walk the edges of the shop before assuming it is not there.

Why Isn’t My Radar Showing the Next Island?
Sometimes the radar looks broken when it is not. A common spot for this is right after feeding the piranha boss’s quest giver, the girl NPC on the early islands. Players expect the next island’s coordinates to appear right away and they do not. What actually unlocks that marker is a flash drive, not the quest turn-in itself. Grab that first and the coordinates show up like normal.
The same confusion shows up around the leech quest for the farmer woman. If your radar seems stuck, check whether there is an item like this you have not picked up yet before assuming something is bugged.
How to Upgrade the Radar in How to Fish
Before you head to the Rocks, stop at the local shop. There is an upgrade there that mounts the radar directly onto your boat instead of forcing you to hold it. Once it is mounted, you get your hands free permanently, and I noticed it stopped disappearing from explosions too, since it is no longer just sitting loose in the boat.
| Handheld Radar | Mounted Radar | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you get it | Lighthouse Keeper, $10 | Shop before The Rocks |
| Frees your hands | No | Yes |
| Can be lost to dynamite | Yes | No |
Once you have this, the whole navigation problem mostly disappears. You still buy fresh handheld ones on later islands if you want a backup, but the mounted version is the one doing the actual work from that point on.
The radar looks like a throwaway $10 item at first, and then you lose it once and realize how much you were leaning on it. Buy the mount as soon as you can afford it, and stop worrying about which island sells a spare.
