Sovereign Tower Gwendan Guide: How to Recruit, Best Quests, and Reforming Him

Sir Gwendan of Villador is the knight who tells you he’s the greatest in the land, then quietly asks you for money. He arrives early, has the highest Charisma on your roster, and hides four traits that change which quests he belongs on. Send him on the wrong job and he’ll cost you Nobility instead of earning it.
How to Recruit Gwendan
He appears as a candidacy on Cycle 3 with no requirements. Players who ran through Act I and people who dug through the game files both point to day 3. Accept it and he joins your Round Table.

Best and Worst Quests for Gwendan
Nine quests have Gwendan-specific Unexpected Outcomes built in. They aren’t random; they fire when the right knight takes the right quest.
| Quest | What happens with Gwendan | Verdict |
| Bucolic Diplomacy | 150 gold, +2 Nobles, no damage | Send him |
| Checking the Egg | 75 gold, +2 Nobles | Send him |
| Negotiate the Eggs | 75 gold, +2 Nobles | Send him |
| Alchemy Tournament | Ambrosia, +2 Scholars, 50 gold | Good pick |
| The Clean Keeper Goose, Part 2 | Opens the branch toward Chester | Situational |
| Virtual Currency | +1 Nobles, 30 gold | Fine |
| Searching for the Traitor | Has a Gwendan branch | Fine |
| A Spider in a Cave | 45 gold instead of 110, plus 2–5 damage | Avoid unreformed |
| The Stolen Tiara | Quest fails, −2 Nobles | Avoid unreformed |
Bucolic Diplomacy is his best quest by a mile
Normally this pays 5 gold and +1 Nobles. Send Gwendan and it pays 150 gold and +2 Nobles, with no armour damage, because Gwendolen is his aunt and the Villador emissary recognises her nephew. Arlin’s report notes she was so pleased to see him pampering her petunias that she handed him extra pocket money.
Two quests that will burn you
The Stolen Tiara normally gives 75 gold and +2 Nobles. Send an unreformed Gwendan and it fails outright and costs you 2 points of Nobility. Arlin’s write-up all but says he pocketed the tiara.

A Spider in a Cave costs him 2–5 armour damage and pays 45 gold instead of 110, which fits: he has Fear of the Dark and the quest carries the Cave condition. Reforming him switches both negative outcomes off.
The goose quest is really a Chester quest
On The Clean Keeper Goose Part 2, check how the eggs are described:
- Shiny → send Gwendan
- Delicious Aroma → send any knight with a mount
- Smells Bad → send any knight with cheese
All three open the same branch and pay 1 gold. The real reward is Chester, who turns up afterwards. When you meet him, don’t pick “You’re Welcome.”

One bug: Virtual Currency has a better Reformed outcome written in (+2 Nobles, 120 gold, +5 tax), but testers say it isn’t firing as of August 11, 2026.
General rules
- Avoid Cave and At Night quests while he’s unreformed. Fear of the Dark is −1 there.
- Don’t assume he’s your diplomat. Arrogant is −1 on Diplomacy but hidden Seductive is +1, so they cancel out. The real problem is his extra −1 on People Involved, so keep him out of crowded jobs.
- Feed him first. A favourite meal adds +0.5 quest score on top of affinity.
- Patch 1.0.8 softened the weak-stat penalty and raised the over-levelled bonus, so his 8 Charisma carries more weight now.
Gwendan Affinity: How to Stop Him Quitting, and Reform Him
Affinity runs −10 to +10, starting at 0. At −7 a knight resigns. Only Alwena and Ari never leave.
What Raises it: a favourite meal (+1.5), a liked quest type or condition (+1.33, his hidden like is Competition), a Wise Sovereign, and asking his opinion in free time.

What Lowers it: a disliked quest (−0.75: Relic Recovery, and secretly Assassination), an Audacious Sovereign, and shutting him down in dialogue.
If he’s about to quit, send a Croque-Monsieur or Crêpe two cycles running. That’s +3, enough to pull almost anyone off the resignation line. Then queue a Competition or Nobles quest and stop sending him on Relic Recovery.
Reformed vs Repaid (they’re not the same)
For Gwendan, affinity isn’t just about resignation, it’s his whole storyline. Push it up and a debt collector shows up. When the debt is raised with you, let him leave the Round Table to pay it off.
Reformed is the big one:
- +2 Strength, +1 Wits, +1 Charisma (7 STR / 4 AGI / 9 CHA / 2 MAG / 4 WIT / 1 LCK)
- Removes Noble Soul, Arrogant, Fear of the Dark, and In Debt
- Adds True Noble Soul, scoring off all satisfaction categories, not just Nobility
- Switches off his three bad special quest outcomes
Repaid only clears In Debt. He keeps the ego, the Arrogant trait, and the fear. A separate story path grants +8 Magic, taking him from 2 to 10.
His talks fork at Affinity 3 between a humble and a pretentious version of himself, and Reformed unlocks more at 5 and 8. Getting him there earns the achievement “Make Gwendan overcome his personal issues”. Our Sovereign Tower romance guide explains how these conversation paths work.
Can Gwendan Die?
Yes, but only since Patch 1.0.8.
The patch, released 10 August 2026, fixed an issue where Gwendan was immortal and it was impossible for him to die. It also fixed an event where Gwendolen mourned his death twice. Older guides saying he can’t die are out of date.

Death works as it does for everyone: failed assignments damage armour, and a knight whose armour hits zero dies permanently. Gwendan starts on 6 armour, which is low, and the blacksmith repairs only one knight per cycle. Repair him early, keep him off Cave and At Night quests while unreformed, and remember the rewind exists.
Gwendan’s Stats, Traits, and Preferences
| Stat | Starting value |
| Level | 1 |
| Strength | 5 |
| Agility | 4 |
| Charisma | 8 |
| Magic | 2 |
| Wits | 3 |
| Luck | 1 |
| Armour | 6 |
| Trait | Visible? | Effect |
| Noble Soul | Yes | Score shifts with the quest’s impact on Nobility satisfaction |
| Arrogant | Yes | −1 on Diplomacy and People Involved |
| Seductive | Hidden | +1 on Diplomacy |
| In Debt | Hidden | Chance to reduce the coin you get on completion |
| Fear of the Dark | Hidden | −1 on Cave and At Night (Alwena can reveal this one) |
Preferences: likes Competition (hidden), dislikes Relic Recovery, secretly dislikes Assassination. Likes a Wise Sovereign, dislikes an Audacious one. Favourite meals are Crêpe and Croque-Monsieur.
His bio explains the personality: born into nobility, his parents constantly told him he had an extraordinary destiny and could achieve anything, which is how he became a knight for questionable reasons. Reform him and you get one of the better all-round knights in the game. Ignore him and he’ll lose you a tiara.
