The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu Tips for Beginners

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu might seem difficult and even strange to play because of its peculiar mechanics; especially the madness and hallucination system. Here I’m going to share with you some of the Omen of Cthulhu tips that I believe can make everything much easier; especially at the beginning of the game. If you want to finish the expeditions faster and more effectively you are gonna find some very useful tips and solutions to some of the most common problems you encounter in the game.

How to overcome Hallucinations and Madness in Omen of Cthulhu

The most unique feature in this game is the hallucination. If you stay there too long or get far from Father Escalona and his ox cart, you start seeing things that are not there (when I started playing I had no idea about this so I learned it the hard way), your teammates might look like monsters and stationary objects start moving. What’s interesting is this hallucination is individual; what you see might be different than what your teammate sees.

This is a great mechanic that makes the co-operative nature of the game even more important. In order to make sure what’s real and what’s not, communication with your teammates is key. If you are not sure about the nature of what you are seeing, just ask your teammates whether they are seeing the same thing. If they are not, then it’s not real.

Staying close to your teammates can reduce the hallucinations but a more solid option would be to return to the ox cart.

Have you seen those glowing mushrooms on the ground? Those are your last resort to restrain your hallucinations. But remember: Eat them only if you have to.

Hunting Deer

While exploring the land, you might come across some deer. I strongly suggest that you hunt them. When you return to the galleon, take them to the cook to improve your rations, so you can recover more health with each meal.

Staying Silent: Sometimes stealth is better than speed

Whatever you do creates some noise, and any noise you make disturbs the environment and nature. If you run, or use your gun or do anything else you might wake a creature and invite trouble. So try to be as stealthy and quiet as possible. It doesn’t mean you have to tiptoe all the time but it means you can walk instead of running whenever possible or use your melee weapons instead of pistols if you can. This way you will avoid some unnecessary problems and everything will be easier.

Make use of Ammonia Salt and crucifix

In the loadout of some of the contracts, you might find Ammonia Salt. These are very important as they let you revive a dead teammate. So always take Ammonia Salt with you.
You can find some other items that will help you in missions. You can buy many of these items on the ship. Crucifix is one of these useful items that when you hold it up, it slows your enemies and monsters down, giving you more time to run away or your teammates to prepare for a fight.

Torch and Lanterns; Two effective weapons

At the beginning you, just like me might think that these two are your light sources and that’s their only usage. But they let you set fire to various objects. With the torch you can burn reanimating enemies and kill them once and for all. Otherwise they would be resurrected every time and pose new troubles for you. Also torch is great for burning those moving branches that try to bind you and stop you from moving.

One of the most annoying creatures in the whole game is the creeping canopy. You might encounter them if you use Medallion item too much. Not very easy to fight against and not very easy to run away from. How can you kill them? Lanterns. When you throw your lantern, it explodes on the impact. So the next time you encounter a creeping canopy just throw your lantern at it.

Look for Logbooks whenever you can

When you find a Logbook a new part of the map will be unlocked for you. This means, new treasures to find, easier paths and safer routes. So when you find a fort, try to look for Logbooks.

Don’t be greedy!

You don’t have to collect all the treasures and items to win a mission. Decision making is an important part of the game and you always have to consider the risk of continuing the expedition. It’s much better to return with something rather than nothing. If the risk of the expedition becomes too much and you feel like death is near just go back to the boat and return to the galleon with what you have collected already.

That’s all the tips you need as a beginner to start the game. What’s something you think other players should know to make the game easier for them? Tell us in the comments!
