A Guide for Starminer Water Management

Are you trying to figure out the Starminer water managing system? I was the same a few days ago, but now I’ve learned things. Here’s my simple guide on how to find water and use it best.

Why You Need Water

In Starminer, water isn’t just for show. Your colonists and habitats need it to survive. It’s the difference between a thriving space operation and a dead one.

Note: Since the launch, the developers have been actively balancing things. The most impactful change is that water consumption has been reduced by 50%. This makes keeping your crew alive and your operations running much easier than it was in the first few days.

Managing Heat: The Cooling Loop

Every piece of equipment heats. If you ignore heat, your machinery will eventually break down and fail. An effective cooling loop is crucial.

Your goal is to move heat away from your machines and radiate it out into space. Here is how it works:

  • Place a Water Tank at the start of the loop.
  • Connect pipes from the tank to your first machine’s coolant input.
  • Connect the machine’s coolant output to a Radiator.
  • Connect the Radiator’s output back to the tank to complete the loop.

Where to Find Water

You won’t find Starminer water floating around. You have to mine it from ice asteroids.

The first thing to do is to look for the right asteroids. Some asteroids are packed with water ice. You can usually spot them by their appearance.

Use your scanner. Before you start blasting, scan the asteroid. The scanner will color-code resource patches. Green patches show where the good stuff is, including H₂O.

How to Mine Water

The process is the same as mining any other resource in the game, it’s simple.

  1. Equip mining lasers: You need lasers to break ice chunks.
  2. Shoot the green patches: Aim your lasers at the green scanned areas for max efficiency. Advanced lasers mine faster but use more power and generate more heat, so choose wisely.
  3. Haulers transport the ice: After you’ve broken off ice chunks, your Haulers (small support vessels) will automatically ferry them back to your station.
  4. Refine the ice: Once the ice chunks are at your station, you can store them or refine them into usable water using a Refinery Module. A T1 Refinery can handle basic ice chunks, advanced refineries can process multiple chunks at once.

Store Your Starminer Water

You need somewhere to put all that water. You can’t just leave it in a bucket. Water Cisterns are special storage units made specifically for holding refined ice or water. Build them at your station to keep your water safe and organized until it’s needed.

The Fusion Generator

When you unlock the Fusion Generator, your relationship with water changes completely. This powerful energy source consumes water directly as fuel. As I mentioned, a post-launch update has reduced water consumption by 50% to make management more forgiving. However, ignoring its thirst can still have catastrophic consequences.

If your water supply runs dry, the generator shuts down, potentially causing a cascading power failure across your entire base

How to Manage It

Before building your first Fusion Generator, ensure you have either a reliable ice mining operation established or you have researched the Water Recycler module. A single ice asteroid can yield hundreds of liters of water when melted.

Keep Water Flowing

That’s the full picture on water in Starminer. Find ice asteroids and use your lasers to break them free. Remember, your trusty Haulers will bring the ice chunks back to your station for refining. Don’t forget to build dedicated Water Cisterns for safe storage.

FAQs

How do I find water?

You need to find and mine ice asteroids. Use your ship’s Scanner Module to highlight resource patches. Look for the green patches, which mark H₂O and other primary resources like Iron and Cobalt.

Where do I store water?

You need to build Water Cisterns.
