Overwatch Grímsvötn Map Guide: Route, Lava Damage and Every Secret

Overwatch Grímsvötn is live. It arrived with Season 5 on October 6 and is the first new Escort map since Overwatch 2 launched. That’s a long wait. Plenty of players are sick of payload maps anyway, and that’s fair. But this one has you pushing a prison cell through a wrecked volcanic prison in Iceland, with lava, tons of flank routes, and secrets everywhere. Keep reading for the route, the lava, the lore, and every Easter egg players have found so far.

Overwatch Grímsvötn Map Basics
The name comes from a real Icelandic volcano, which explains all the lava. Players (myself included) are praising the fire-versus-ice look most so far.

Grímsvötn Lore: What Happened at This Prison
Grimsvotn has some crazy stories behind it that you shouldn’t miss:
From Watchpoint to Helix to Talon
Grímsvötn started as an Overwatch Watchpoint. Helix later took control of what is the highest-security prison on the planet. It held dangerous criminals, dangerous weapons and tech, and a few buried Overwatch secrets. Talon runs it now. They took over after Doomfist’s assault and Doctrine’s breakout. So the map you play is the aftermath, not the prison in its prime. Everything is already wrecked, and honestly, that’s the best part of the setting.

Doomfist and Doctrine’s Connection
Doomfist was locked up here before he escaped and went on to lead Talon. While inside, he met Doctrine and saw what he could do. Doctrine was stuck there for a long time. The BlizzCon panel transcript says Ana Amari and Freja Skov put him there. Doomfist eventually came back to break him out, and that kicks off the final chapter of Reign of Talon. The last stretch of the map matches the breakout scene from the cinematic.
Overwatch Grimsvotn Map Layout and Route
There are three points in this map that you should know. Forget the usual cart. You escort an actual prison cell (a prisoner pod) through the facility. The route runs through multiple gates and security layers and drops into hotter, lava-heavy areas as it goes.
First Point
The first point is wide open and quick to push. Defenders get almost no cover until near the end of the point, so that’s where you’ll want to dig in. The view from attacker spawn is gorgeous, so I’d rather be an attacker here.

Second Point
Defenders get a small hill in the middle, but attackers have plenty of flank routes and off-angles to punish it. The end of second is the best defensive hold players have found so far. It has a bit of high ground, some space, and actual cover.
Final Point
The third point’s choke runs downhill, which gives attackers a height advantage. Defense spawns also feel far away, so a lost fight is hard to recover from. I would say you can still go either way and expect longer fights near the final push. The area right before the last cap looks like a decent stall spot.

Warning: Standing in exposed lava hurts, and there’s a big wall of lava next to the payload route. So keep that in mind.
All Grímsvötn Easter Eggs and Secrets
Developer Aaron Keller says the map hides hints about other prisoners held here, and players are already digging them up. These are the easter eggs discovered so far:
Doomfist’s Old Cell
You can find Doomfist’s former cell on the live map. There is the number 88503 on the door. You can see a broken wall beside his cell and a newspaper article there titled: “IS DOOMFIST REALLY DEAD?”

The Destroyed Sentinel and Doctrine’s Cell
Remember the giant Sentinel Doomfist wrecks at the end of the Doctrine cinematic? It’s sitting at the end of the map, and Keller confirmed it. One creator says the final area, including Doctrine’s cell, is essentially the breakout location from the trailer. Watch the cinematic first, then take a slow lap of the last section. It’s a good payoff.

The Knocking Cell and “Dagur 1875”
Players report knocking from behind a cell door underground. One commenter calls it cell 06071. Nearby, a sink is marked “Dagur 1875,” along with a tally that reaches 60. A commenter says “dagur” means “day” in Icelandic and is also a common boy’s name. Nobody knows who’s knocking, and the Doomfist theory is just a theory. Treat the exact location as unconfirmed until more screenshots show up.
Smaller Details
| Detail | What you’ll see |
|---|---|
| Sombra sugar skulls | On facility systems and robots, which hints she hacked parts of the prison |
| Helix signage | Propaganda posters and lockdown screens |
| Security displays | Prisoner pod path, evacuation routes, scanner control, restricted workstation |
| Puffins | Near the exterior |
| Pachimari | In an open cell |
The sugar skulls are visible, but how much Sombra actually hacked is a guess. Most of these were spotted in the BlizzCon preview build. The puffins are my favorite.
FAQ
Why am I not getting Grímsvötn in queue?
It may just be rotation. The October 6 patch changed map voting, so the last two maps you played within two hours won’t be offered. One player went a full day without seeing it.
Do I need Doctrine to play it?
No. It’s a regular Escort map in normal play. Doctrine’s story is the reason it exists, but you don’t need him to queue into it.
