Family Time Guide: How to Get Wood, Food, Water & Build Shelter

If “Throw me at the wolves and I come back as the father” was a game, it would be Family Time, an indie game made by sgtHale in the Unity engine. This 2026 trending game has roughly 35.000 followers on Steam. The Dev has put out a demo on their Patreon and plans to release episodic updates for the game, with a particularly big one coming this Friday. In this guide, we are going to go over basic game interactions, how to progress through this game’s first few days, and what to expect.

How to Get Wood
Start by switching to your axe from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and going up to a tree and cutting it. It will usually break into three or four logs, and you can break the logs into planks, which can be used for crafting structures in the game.

How to Build a Shelter
Start by setting walls and floors down in a suitable location on the map. You can set structures down by scrolling to the blueprint on your item bar. Set some walls and floors down, and if you feel the place is uneven, you can fix that by using the shovel in your toolbar and flattening or raising the ground till it’s even.

Make shelter by putting down structure plans (they are blue and you can walk through them). Now remember the wood we cut a few moments ago? It’s time to go and pick them up and build our plans. Switch to your hammer and pick up the wood, move to the plans, and interact with them to build them. Each plan takes one plank or log to be complete.

You can call your children to follow you (by pressing F) and order them to carry logs and planks (by pressing E) to different locations, or even put them into plans and build them. After the basic walls and the floor are complete, build cots for children and a bed for Wolf Mama.

How to Get Food
As of the current update, you can hunt chickens and pigs around the map by ordering your children to do so.
Chickens
Chickens are the easiest source of food to give your children as they run slow and your children will dispatch them in no time.

Pigs
For pigs, however, you should be a bit strategic. You see, the pigs are chubby, and when they sense danger, they will run around ramming you and your children aside. If you are agile enough to grab their tail, you can lead the pigs to ram into an obstacle (a tree, for example) knocking them out. While they are out, order your children to hunt the pig, or tie it up with a fistful of grass.

When hunted, pigs and chickens will turn into meat, which your children will consume automatically. Pigs are harder to hunt, but they also produce more meat. (Make sure to have both the babies and the mama unlocked, or else the children won’t eat the food)
How to Give Water to Wolf Children
There are days when you have to get water for your children to drink. To do so, either bring them to an existing body of water on the map, or build a well and a bucket (The costs of these furniture mentioned in “how to make a shelter part”) and take water from the well and throw it on the ground so your children can drink. (Kind of weird, but that’s how it is until we get a drinking bowl or something.)
How to Make Animals Breed in Family Time
A stable source of food goes a long way in this game. Make some wood fence and a wood gate, make hay floor next inside the pen. Find hay from literally anywhere that is green on the map. Run around the map and find chickens. Carry them back to the pen and drop them there. The chickens will breed and lay eggs when on a hay floor, so your food source is guaranteed for a few days.

You can also bring in pigs for the same purpose (as they give you more meat than chickens), but you have to go through the extra effort to have them knocked out and tied up before you can carry them or have them carried by your children (faster and more efficient) to the pen.

FAQ
What if I fail to feed the Wolf children?
You may ask, “What happens if I don’t complete the task by night?” Well, dear reader, if you fail to complete the task, you’ll anger Wolf Mama, and if you anger her three times, it’s game over.
Is there an ending to Family Time?
This is a casual game and in that fashion it’s endless, though you would stop having more children at 65.000 which the character limit of the game. Have fun tending to an army of wolf puppies.
