How to Defeat Marok in Doom the Dark Ages: Revelations

Doom the Dark Ages: Revelations has been just released and we are excited for the new extended story line and characters. At some point you are going to encounter Marok who is the son of Valen, and apart from the final boss he is probably the toughest boss in the game. Different types of attacks makes it almost impossible to defeat Marok. And if all of these are not enough, you have to defeat him three times to pass the level. Here we have prepared a guide, telling you every one of his moves and how you can counter them.

Weapons and Equipment You Need To Defeat Marok

Right before reaching Marok, there is a cut scene and you acquire an ax. In addition to that if you are slow in dodging, a shield will help you a lot. In your left hand hold your melee weapons and in your right hand keep a rifle, gun or grenade launcher.

How to Defeat Marok: First Phase

At first the bald angry guy holds one green sword in each hand. Don’t be fooled by those swords, the son of Valen can do much more than dashing and slashing. Each time he slams his swords to the ground some tentacles appear at those spots and will damage you. So when he jumps, dodge and put some distance between yourself and where you used to stand.

Shooting Fiery Arrows

Sometimes Marok jumps back and shoots 3 fiery arrows at you. These are fairly easy to dodge.

Marok’s first Combo

If you see Marok sitting and a shield appear around him you might be in some trouble. This is a strong combo that really pushed me to the edge of my sanity. With the shield, he suddenly jumps into the air and while in midair, some shockwaves travel across the ground in circles. The only thing you have to do is to jump over them. What comes next is a little bit harder to avoid. He shoots some red and blue flames at you that look like birds. The best thing you can do is to move left and right to avoid them.

After that he slams to the ground and upon the impact some cross-shaped shots travel the ground and as they travel further, they move apart and the gap between each shot gets bigger. When Marok is in the air put as much distance between you and him as you can; it would be much easier to dodge those cross shots if you are far from him.

Releasing the Wolves

Another thing he does is to slam his sword to the ground and release two wolves (in the next two phases there will be 4 wolves.) These dogs don’t deal much damage and they drop health when you kill them. You can collect these health with area attacks.

Useful Tip: Certain attacks on Marok (like throwing the spear or shooting with the shotgun) will cause him to stagger. Here there is a chance to deal a ton of damage. When he is staggering, if you are close, you can punch him by pressing E.

How to Defeat Marok: Second Phase

After you drain his health bar completely, there will be a moment when he looks to be in pain, then you’ll hear Khan Maykr’s voice and suddenly his health bar and yours will be full and you have to fight him again. Many of his attacks will be the same as the first phase but there will be two additional ones.

Cross shaped shots

Marok slams his sword to the ground and sends a cross shaped shot at you, in my opinion very easy to dodge.

The second combo

First a shield will form around Marok then two green lines slowly appear on the ground and he will run to the point of conjunction.

When he reaches that point, he will slam both his swords to the ground and suddenly those two lines become barriers, stopping you from passing them and escaping that area.

Marok's barrier in the second combo

You are inevitably trapped inside this area in front of Marok. Then he’ll shoot some cross shaped shots. These are either on the ground and you can easily jump over them. Or they are coming right at you, these you can either dodge or slash with your ax. Some of them also pass right above your head. At the end of the combo Marok dashes at you, so be prepared to dodge.

The wolf attacks would be the same except each time he will release four of them.

This phase ends by draining Marok’s health bar for the second time and grabbing him by the neck. His mask will fall off.

How to Defeat Marok: Third Phase

He will release himself from your grip and you have to fight this bald bastard for the third time. He’ll go back a little bit and after forming the shield around him, Khan Maykr will appear, two fiery laser beams will hit the ground and upon impact, each will release a shock wave you have to jump over. These laser beams will move around so be careful not to bump into them.

The Tentacles

This attack happened in the previous phases as well. When Marok looks above and raises his sword move away quickly.

The Second Combo with a Twist

Here the second combo will happen again but after shooting his shots, two screens from left and right appear and move toward you, you have to dodge.

At last, with the final blow he will drop both swords and kneel on the ground, his eye will turn to normal, freed from Khan Maykr’s control, he decides to stab himself in Tether, and he explodes violently. Is this the end of Marok? I guess you have to play till the end to find out!
