Brotato Primal Dread Characters: All 10 and Their Abilities Explained

Brotato Primal Dread characters have some pretty questionable survival strategies. Caveman burns his own weapons and Poacher sacrifices money to get stronger. Droid is ready to become more machine than potato. I wouldn’t call any of these logical choices, but the DLC’s ten new characters bring some interesting mechanics to the Jungle.
Here’s the complete roster including their abilities and what you need to know about character unlocks.

All 10 Brotato Primal Dread Characters and Abilities
Primal Dread adds ten playable characters to Brotato, each with a different approach to surviving the Jungle’s 20 waves.
| Character | Ability |
|---|---|
| Archaeologist | Digs up crates from excavation sites and grows stronger with each one. |
| Arsonist | Leaves pools of fire around the map. |
| Caveman | Burns its own weapons to stay in the light, making Primitive weapons hit harder. |
| Droid | Specializes in Mecha Evolution. |
| Mad Scientist | Specific ability details aren’t confirmed here. |
| Poacher | Creates a hunting area where kills make it stronger but provide less money. |
| Survivor | Specific ability details aren’t confirmed here. |
| Time Shifter | Slows everything around it after taking damage without slowing itself down. |
| Variant | Specializes in Mutation Evolution. |
| Veteran | Thrives at low health while fighting enemy hordes. |
Droid and Variant: Characters Built for Evolution
Droid and Variant are the two new characters built around Primal Dread’s Evolution system. Droid specializes in Mecha, which strengthens weapons, while Variant focuses on Mutation and its item-copying mechanics.

Using them together in co-op gives you both the benefits and drawbacks of their Evolution mechanics.

If I wanted to experiment with the new system, these would be my first two picks. For a closer look at how their mechanics work, check out our Brotato Primal Dread Evolution guide.
Other Primal Dread Character Abilities Explained
Poacher has an interesting tradeoff. Kills inside its hunting area make it stronger, but those enemies provide less money. I’d pay attention to where I’m getting kills instead of treating the whole map like one big shooting gallery.

Archaeologist takes a different approach, digging up crates at excavation sites and becoming stronger with every crate collected.

Caveman might have the strangest survival strategy. It burns its own weapons to stay in the light, making Primitive weapons hit harder. Apparently, weapons make perfectly good firewood.
Arsonist also makes use of fire, leaving burning pools around the battlefield.
Time Shifter slows everything around it after taking a hit, while the character itself keeps moving normally.
Veteran, meanwhile, thrives at low health against large groups of enemies. Not exactly my preferred way of staying alive, but that’s the idea.
Brotato Primal Dread Character Unlocks and Achievements
Primal Dread includes a victory achievement for each of its ten characters. You earn these by winning a run with the corresponding character.

There are also separate challenges. Flesh and Steel requires winning a run with both Droid and Variant. It Belongs in a Museum! involves excavating ten dig sites, while The Floor is Lava requires having twelve fire puddles on the ground simultaneously.
Are Brotato Primal Dread Characters Free?
No. All ten characters are part of the paid Brotato: Primal Dread DLC, released on November 2, 2026. You’ll also need the base game.
Besides the new characters, the expansion adds 17 weapons and 40 items. It also introduces the Jungle map and the Evolution system used by Droid and Variant.
The free Update 1.2 arrived alongside the DLC, bringing the Item Set feature that lets you enable or disable content from different expansions and updates.
