Terrible Lizards Dalton: Who He Is and What Happened

Terrible Lizards Dalton is a missing-person mystery with a pretty grim answer. Dalton Coolidge, the paleontologist behind Dalton’s Dinos, went into the underground caverns looking for his son, DJ. He never came back. For a place built around family-friendly dinosaurs, that’s one hell of a family story.
But what exactly happened to Dalton, and how did things go so wrong? His final camcorder footage reveals his fate, while the recordings scattered around the attraction explain what led to the disaster.

What Happened to Dalton in Terrible Lizards?
Dalton Coolidge dies while trying to rescue his missing son, DJ, from the underground caverns. His final camcorder recording shows him cornered by the creatures that have overrun the excavation site. Realizing he has run out of time, Dalton records a final apology to his son before being attacked.
Jordan eventually discovers the camcorder and contacts Stella over the radio and confirms that Dalton is dead.

The game also leaves clues about his final journey. In Chapter 3, Jordan comes across Dalton’s belongings and a recording. Further ahead, a cave containing a blood trail and a flashing light hides a note titled Dalton’s letter goodbye.
Unfortunately, Dalton never gets the reunion he was hoping for. But his son is still alive, and Jordan has a chance to finish what Dalton started.
Who Is Dalton Coolidge?
Dalton Coolidge is a paleontologist who founded Dalton’s Dinos with his wife, Elena. The couple made a major fossil discovery near Route 66 in New Mexico. They found rare dinosaur remains preserved together in what became known as a “duelling dinosaurs” fossil.
That discovery brought them recognition and helped finance their roadside attraction. Dalton wanted a place where families could experience his passion for prehistoric animals while generating enough money to support further research.

By September 19, 1992, when the game takes place, Dalton’s Dinos has been operating for around 15 years. Business has slowed, and Dalton’s attention has shifted toward another excavation project.
His growing obsession with the underground operation puts a strain on his marriage to Elena. He also becomes increasingly distant from DJ, which makes his desperate attempt to save his son even more tragic.
Dalton also dismissed DJ’s stories about Dennis, his supposedly imaginary friend. Unfortunately, Dennis turns out to be very real.
Why Was Dalton Mining Beneath Dalton’s Dinos?
The cheerful dinosaur attraction has a much darker side. Beneath it lies an extensive underground mining operation where Dalton’s crews have been extracting a mysterious substance known as the goo.
The excavation is connected to an outside financial backer called the Broker, who pressures Dalton over production demands. Meanwhile, the operation is running into serious trouble, with failing machinery and increasingly dangerous conditions.

I wouldn’t call that a particularly promising business venture, especially when the workplace starts filling up with mutated dinosaurs.
Things eventually spiral out of control. The creatures overrun the underground facilities, and DJ disappears. Dalton heads into the caverns to find his son and leaves behind video diaries that document his search.
Where to Find Dalton’s Recordings and Goodbye Letter
Dalton’s recordings provide much of the background behind his disappearance. His early tapes focus on the excavation, while the later video diaries follow his increasingly desperate search for DJ.
One of the earliest recordings, The New Site, is found on boxes inside the workshop after the dark tunnel attraction in Chapter 1. In Chapter 3, you can find The Quota inside a tall building after Jordan speaks with Stella. Another recording, The Motherlobe, sits on a table near a generator further into the underground area. These recordings provide more context about Dalton’s mining operation.

His goodbye letter is also in Chapter 3. After reaching the section with Dalton’s belongings, continue until you drop into a cave with a flashing light and a blood trail. Look to the left to find Dalton’s letter goodbye.
What Happens to Dalton Jr. (DJ)?
Dalton Jr., better known as DJ, survives the incident. Jordan eventually finds him alive in the deeper caverns, although his father has already died trying to reach him.
When DJ asks about his dad, Jordan avoids describing the horrifying details. Instead, he gently tells the boy that his father fell down and didn’t get back up.

Jordan then helps DJ escape through the underground facilities. After getting the crew lift working and surviving another encounter with one of the creatures, they finally reach the surface, where Stella’s car is waiting.
It’s not exactly a happy ending for the Coolidge family. Dalton never makes it home, but at least DJ escapes the nightmare beneath Dalton’s Dinos.
