Warframe The Icebind Guide: How to Unlock, Rewards, the 6-Player Mode Explained

The Icebind is Warframe’s newest experimental endgame mode. This is a six-player cooperative activity aimed at experienced players who want something more coordinated and challenging than regular squad missions.

It is not a full raid replacement, but it does demand teamwork, smart loadouts and the ability to adapt to random modifiers. Let’s break everything down clearly so you know exactly what to expect and how to get started.

What is The Icebind?

At its core, The Icebind is a short, high-difficulty mission mode that lasts about 10–15 minutes. You form a squad of exactly six players, each bringing a unique Warframe (no duplicates allowed) and take on Level 999+ enemies that have been heavily buffed.

Every run is randomized through special mission keys called Cryobells, which change the mission type, planet, enemy faction and a stack of modifiers known as Binds.

The mode includes optional Squad Side Objectives that can boost your rewards but will fail the entire mission if you start one and mess it up.

Successful runs end in a special reward room called Melica’s Glacial Laboratory, where you open chests and claim a guaranteed Riven Splicer, the exclusive item that lets you combine Riven traits into new combo stats.

How to Unlock the Icebind

Access is locked behind endgame content. You need to:

  • Finish the Angels of the Zariman quest
  • Finish the Whispers in the Walls quest
  • Unlock either Elite Deep Archimedea or Elite Temporal Archimedea

You do not need to complete an Elite Archimedea run, just unlock access to it. That usually means earning enough Research Points on regular Archimedea missions and reaching Rank 5 with the Cavia or Hex syndicate. There is no Mastery Rank requirement listed.

Once you meet those conditions, travel to the new Earth hub Yuvan Peak. That’s where everything begins.

How Cryobells Work

Cryobells are the keys that start The Icebind. Here’s how they function:

You collect them from the ice pillar at Yuvan Peak. Three new Cryobells appear every weekly reset (Midnight UTC on Sunday). If you don’t use them all, you can stockpile up to six total.

Each Cryobell is unique and displays a full set of traits before you even start:

  • Mission type (Survival, Mobile Defense, Excavation or Disruption)
  • Planet
  • Enemy faction
  • Mission Bind
  • Tactical Bind
  • Your Personal Bind

The Personal Bind is especially important, it sticks to you personally, even if the squad votes for someone else’s Cryobell. Cryobells are only consumed when you successfully extract. If the mission fails for any reason (including a failed side objective), the key stays in your inventory and you can try again.

How the 6-Player System Works

There is no public matchmaking at launch. You must form a full premade squad of six.

The process works like this:

  1. Grab your Cryobells at Yuvan Peak.
  2. Speak to Cephalon Melica and choose “Ring a Cryobell.”
  3. Invite five other players. Everyone in the squad must also interact with Melica.
  4. Each player selects one of their Cryobells and can adjust their loadout.
  5. Once the last player locks in their choice, a 60-second voting timer starts. The whole squad reviews all six options and votes. If nobody votes, the game picks randomly. In a tie, the host’s vote wins.
  6. After voting, you get a short 10-second review period, then the mission loads.

Permanent Restrictions Inside Every Icebind

Enemies start at Level 999+ and receive large Empowered bonuses to Health, Shields and Armor (up to +800% total based on squad size), plus more Eximus spawns.

No self-revives. When someone bleeds out, a Tombstone appears and at least three living teammates must sacrifice health to revive them. Bleedout timers get shorter after each revive.

Using Last Gasp removes two extra seconds from the timer. Restore gear has a three-minute cooldown. Companions take twice as long to recover, Shield Gate immunity duration is cut in half. And If you stay dead for three minutes or more, you stop earning Frozen Keys from side objectives.

These rules make staying alive and supporting teammates much more important than in normal missions.

Squad Side Objectives

Up to three optional Squad Side Objectives can appear during a run. They show up as purple waypoints on the minimap. These are completely optional, but they come with real risk.

To start one, enough players must gather nearby and someone has to hit the “Start” prompt. Once started, failing the objective fails the entire mission. You do not lose your Cryobell on a failure, but you do have to restart from the beginning.

The five side objectives available at launch are:

  • Lockbox: Collect Cyphers from enemies and deliver them to unlock the box.
  • Cryothermia: Hold a Cryo Core while it deals escalating health damage (basically a hot potato mechanic).
  • Indomitable Ice: Focus fire on ice crystals to charge them.
  • Entropy Orb: Gather around the orb and stay in the safe segments while avoiding damaging pulses.
  • Signal Chain: Line up your Warframes to connect an energy beam between two points and hold the link.

Each successful side objective gives every squad member a Frozen Key. You can earn up to three per run. Timing matters, if a side objective is already active when the main mission ends, the game waits for you to finish it before extracting.

The Icebind Rewards

This is my favorite part: Finishing the mission teleports the whole squad straight into Melica’s Glacial Laboratory instead of a normal extraction. This is where you cash in.

You always receive One Riven Splicer (guaranteed and exclusive to this mode)

You also earn keys for chests:

  • Crested Frozen Key (one guaranteed for completing the main mission) opens the central Crested chests. These give a large Kuva payout (7,500 / 17,500 / 100,000) plus a high value item such as Omni Forma, a Forma Bundle, various Riven mods, Archon Shards or a Riven Transmuter.
  • Frozen Keys (up to three from side objectives) open the smaller chests along the edges. These give smaller Kuva amounts plus rewards like Forma, Vosfor, three-day boosters, Rivens, or Archon Shards.

There are also lore fragments hidden in the room if you take a moment to explore before leaving.

Best Warframes for The Icebind

Because only one of each Warframe is allowed and the modifiers can be brutal, team composition matters more than usual. Early strong options that players and creators are favoring include:

  • Dante or Revenant for reliable team survivability
  • Wisp for universal mote support
  • Oberon for armor and status cleansing
  • Follie for flexible utility and strong scaling ability damage
  • Energy-independent frames like Hildryn or Lavos to shrug off heavy energy reductions
  • Solid damage dealers that don’t rely on specific statuses

And remember that communication is key. Talk about who is bringing what before you lock in Cryobells and be ready to adapt your loadout to your Personal Bind.

Is The Icebind Worth Doing?

It actually depends on what you want from the game. I personally don’t spend much time playing this mode, honestly because I don’t have that 5 other friends to join me (that’s sad, I know). Anyway, I enjoy playing solo enough.

The mode is worth your time if you enjoy coordinated group content, want exclusive Riven Splicers, or need a steady source of Kuva, Forma, Archon Shards and Rivens. The challenge feels meaningful and the side objectives add real decision-making.

It may feel less appealing if you mainly play solo or with randoms, dislike heavy random modifiers or find organizing a six-player group every week too much hassle. The rewards are good but not overwhelmingly better than other endgame activities for every player, especially on lower Kuva rolls.

FAQs

Do I lose my Cryobell if the mission fails?

No. Only successful extraction spends it.

What’s the biggest mistake new players make?

Starting a side objective when the squad isn’t ready or staying dead long enough to lose Frozen Key rewards.

Is there story content?

Yes. Melica’s Glacial Laboratory contains hidden lore fragments, while the Cryobells themselves are tied to Narin’s influence. Iceblade of Narin also connects Melica’s Lab and the surrounding story to the Man in the Wall.
