Active Matter PvE Guide | Isolated Raids, Maps and Anomaly Counters

Active Matter PvE mode is called Isolated Raids, and as of the full release on September 15, it’s unlimited, open to every edition, and runs on the same raid systems as PvP. You still lose your gear if you die, though. PvE just means no other players are hunting you. Keep reading to learn which maps are PvE and how you can kill all Anomalies.
What You’ll Read:
What Is PvE Mode (Isolated Raids) in Active Matter
Isolated Raids is Active Matter’s PvE mode. Pick it solo or bring a pre-made group into co-op; either way, no other player squads spawn in your raid. That’s the entire difference from Open raids: the environment stays exactly as hostile. Anomalies, mutated creatures, timers, and the extraction structure all exist here too.
Die in an Isolated raid, and you lose whatever gear wasn’t tucked into your safe container, same as PvP. The devs have also warned that friendly fire still works between co-op partners in Isolated. So don’t get careless just because there’s no PvP squad wiping you.
I know. “PvE” sounds like it should mean “safe,” but here it just means that one specific danger is off the table.

Which Maps Are PvE, PvP-Only, or Both
Most raid content supports Isolated, but not every map does. Here’s the confirmed list for full release:
| Map / Mode | Availability |
|---|---|
| Gigastructure | Open-only |
| Unstable Zone modes | Open-only |
| Escape from Dogorsk | PvE-only |
| Downtown: Collapse | PvE-only |
| Scrapyard | PvP-designed |
Note: Everything else on the raid list (Shegolskoe, Factory, Park, Ozernoe, Cargo Port, Military Base, Dogorsk, Airport, Headquarters) runs in both modes.
Active Matter PvE Combat Basics
Audio is your best early-warning system. Before engaging anything, check how many are sleeping nearby. Waking one often turns into a multi-enemy fight, and moving slow and quiet keeps most anomalies from noticing you at all. Distorted are the exception; even careful play can still trigger the group-aggro issue above.
Shotguns punch far above their price tag here. Even a cheap one handles a big chunk of PvE threats, which is why pro players always have one as their solo secondary.
Hold onto at least one grenade for extraction. Small PvE groups like to camp extract points, and clearing one fast beats getting boxed in while your timer runs out.
The raid-select screen also tells you what you’re walking into: expected anomaly types show in the bottom-left, and once you’re in the raid, red circles on the map mark anomaly concentrations for faster objective hunting.

How to Defeat All Anomalies in Active Matter
Pulled from verified launch-era gameplay. A couple of names/details are flagged as unverified — worth double-checking in your own footage before you publish anywhere.
| Anomaly | Quick counter |
|---|---|
| Flowerman | One melee hit to the head kills it, even mid-charge |
| Alpha Flowerman | Burn it with fire/incendiary first, then focus gunfire; funnel it through doorways or stairs to control positioning |
| Invisibles | Melee works well; they tend to appear if you’ve been stationary too long. So keep moving |
| Hellhounds | Back away and stab them one at a time instead of spraying ammo; portal closes once the group’s dead |
| Seeds | Usually not worth the ammo. Bypass rather than farm; watch for them glitched under forest floors |
| Bouncy Mines | Throw a bolt or shoot to disable before it launches you; common around Gigastructure |
| Mimics | One-hit melee or a single shot once they reveal themselves |
| Alpha Mimic | Fight from a defensible building, sidestep tentacle swings, use incendiary grenades to disrupt it, and clear its spawned adds fast |
| Stonemen | Keep facing it while backing away. It only advances when you look away; a grenade at its feet finishes it |
| Shy Girls | Opposite of a Stoneman. Avoid eye contact, move past, looking at the floor; go for headshots if it goes aggro |
| Electric Balls | Shoot it early when it starts pulsating, before it detonates near you |
| Fireballs | Run straight through to take no damage, and it just detonates harmlessly behind you |
| Turned Soldiers / Police / SWAT | Break line of sight and reposition rather than holding one angle too long; expect them in small groups |
| Bowers | Shotgun at close range and a few blasts drop them fast |
| Scorched | Straightforward gunfire or melee kill; wait out its death explosion before looting |
| Dendroids | Treat like an armed enemy, not a passive anomaly. They shoot back, so gun or fire beats melee here |
| Swarm/Hive | Flamethrower is the cleanest answer; shotgun works too |
| Poltergeist | Fire seems to kill it, but no known quest requires hunting it, and it’s not worth the trouble |
Objective and Investigation Limits in PvE
Not every task works in Isolated. At launch, Qualified Field Work (Agent-tier) and High-Value Operations (Expert-tier) objectives show up locked when you’re queued into a PvE raid.
Story Investigations are more flexible. They can progress in Isolated as long as the specific task’s conditions allow it, so check the task description before assuming it’s Open-only. There’s no official list of which Investigations qualify, so this one’s a read-the-task-text situation rather than a fixed rule.
If your grind depends on Agent or Expert objectives specifically, you’ll need to queue Open for those regardless of how you feel about PvP.

PvE Progression and Loot (Risk vs. Reward)
Isolated progression is slower, and rare loot shows up less often than in Open. That’s the tradeoff for not having other players hunting you. It doesn’t mean PvE is a dead end, though. You can still find rare drops and level up your operative, just at a slower rate.
The good news is Baseline Compliance Primary Objectives are always available to pure Isolated players. If you’re grinding PvE exclusively, that’s your reliable progression thread even when everything else feels stingy.
Open raids are still the faster track if progression speed is your priority. Isolated is the trade you make for a calmer raid. So pick your pick.

FAQ
Is Active Matter PvE unlimited?
Yes. It is unlimited since April with no edition lock.
Is “Solo” the same as PvE/Isolated?
No. They are different settings. Solo controls squad size in matchmaking; Isolated controls whether hostile player squads exist at all. Open + Solo still puts you against other players’ squads.
What’s the max squad size in Isolated Raids?
Up to three players per squad.
